The economic cost of weeds in dryland cotton production systems of Australia AgEcon

Economic losses and costs associated with weeds in dryland cotton production are important, both for growers and for industry bodies when making decisions about research priorities and research and development funding. A survey was conducted to provide information on weed types, control strategies and estimated costs to growers. We used information from the survey to estimate conventional financial losses due to weeds, and as a basis for evaluating aggregate economic (society) impacts. An economic surplus model was used to estimate the aggregate societal impact of weeds for three production regions in north-eastern Australia. The annual economic costs associated with weeds were estimated to be $41 million, and the on-farm financial costs were $25 million....

Dry land salinisation is a significant cause of land and water degradation in Australia. Changing land use from annual to perennial crops has been widely proposed as a means to reduce land degradation and increase the productivity of saline land. However, in many areas annual crops are financially more attractive than perennial crops. Increases in perennial crops might also reduce local stream flows with adverse effects on in-stream values. As such salinity control is likely to involve significant tradeoffs between public and private costs and benefits. An economic assessment of Insecticide Resistance Management strategies in the Australian Cotton Industry AgEcon

Cotton production in Australia is a high-value industry with about 90% of fibre produced being exported to Asia, primarily to Indonesia. One aspect of modern cotton production is the heavy usage of insecticide sprays to combat Helicoverpa insects. The high cost of sprays and the public view of the industry regarding its perceived impact on the environment have led to the development of integrated pest management strategies. The measurement of insecticide resistance within insect populations has also prompted the development of insecticide resistance management (IRM) strategies.
