Public debate on biotechnology is embroiled in controversy over the risks and benefits associated with this emerging technology. Using data from a national survey, this study analyzes public acceptance of biotechnology in food production. Empirical results suggest that while there is general optimism about biotechnology, and support for its use in plants, public approval of its use in animals is perhaps more limited. Younger and more educated individuals are generally more supportive of biotechnology. Attitudes towards biotechnology differ substantially between males and females, and between whites and non-whites. Financial Structure, Production and Productivity Growth in U.S. Food Manufacturing Industry AgEcon

This paper examines the effects of financial decsion on production, input demands, profitability, and productivityis in U.S. food manufacturing industry. Empirical results shows that output supply, variable input demands, profitability and productivity are affected by agency costs of debt and signaling benefits of dividend payments. Positive contribution of signalling benefits of dividend payments was more than offset by the negative effects of agency cost of debt in TFP growth.

Impact of Biotechnology on Plant Breeding AgEcon

The application of modern biotechnology to plant breeding is considered to be more efficient and quicker than conventional breeding techniques in the development of new and more resilient crop varieties. To test the impact that biotechnology is having on a industrial plant breeding activities, we relate firm level Plant Variety Protection Certificate (PVPC) applications to corresponding expenditure on research and development (R&D), agricultural biotechnology patents applications, field trials of genetically modified crops, firm structure, as well as industry specific characteristics. Regression results indicate agbiotech activities are directly related to PVP applications, hence the creation of new plant varieties.

Biotechnology is often viewed as the defining technology for the future of food and agriculture with the potential to deliver a wide range of economic and health benefits. Public acceptance of genetically modified food products is a critical factor for this emerging technology. Using data from a national survey, this study examines public acceptance of food biotechnology by modeling consumers’' willingness to buy genetically modified foods. Empirical results suggest that younger, white, male and college educated individuals are more likely to accept food biotechnology. This study analyzes U.S. consumers’' acceptance of genetically modified foods within the ordered-probit-model framework. The willingness to consumer three difference GM foods is modeled in terms of consumers’' economic, demographic, and value attributes. Empirical results indicate that respondents’' attitudes and perceptions of biotechnology and their views about various private and public institutions associated with this technology are important determinants of their acceptance of food biotechnology. We find that attitudinal variables have greater influence on the acceptance of food biotechnology than do consumers'’ economic and demographic attributes. Adjustments in Demand During Lithuania's Economic Transition AgEcon

Significant economic changes have occurred in Lithuania since 1992. Major market reforms were introduced through phased liberalization of producer and consumer prices. Panel data from a Lithuanian Household Budget Survey conducted during 1992-94 were used to estimate demand parameters for aggregated commodity groups. The evidence from the household survey shows the relative stability of demand parameters. Estimated price and expenditure elasticities are consistent with levels of low income countries. Households have been relatively responsive to changes in prices and total expenditure in their purchases during the period of transition.

Significant divergence exists in public opinions about biotechnology. Although there is broad support for plant biotechnology for health benefits, opinions differ on the issue of animal genetics for pure economic benefits. While some are opposed to it, many are undecided about genetically modified foods. Considerable skepticism exists about scientists, corporations and government which have negative influence on public acceptance of food biotechnology. Consumers' personal attributes have significant influence on their views about various biotechnology issues.

SCOPE AND SCALE ECONOMIES FOR MULTI-PRODUCT FARMS: FIRM-LEVEL PANEL DATA ANALYSIS AgEcon

This study used the flexible fixed cost quadratic function to analyze the cost structure of multi-product farms using farm-level panel data. The robustness of estimated parameters are examined using four panel data estimators. Results suggest that scale economies remain significant in Illinois farming. An increase in soybean acreage reduces the marginal cost of producing corn. Firm-specific effects, that indicate the levels of fixed costs, are found to be positive and significant.

Lithuania's Food Demand During Economic Transition AgEcon

The linear approximate version of the AIDS model is estimated using data from the Lithuanian household budget survey covering the period from July 1992 to December 1994. Price and real expenditure elasticities for twelve food groups were estimated based on the estimated coefficients of the model. Very little or nothing is known about the demand parameters of Lithuania and other former socialist countries, so the results are of intrinsic interest. Policy makers are looking for ways to preserve farmlands, especially near urban areas. Farmers are also trying to find ways to increase their farm income by incorporating non-traditional activities into their farm routine. This paper attempts to quantify the contributions of selected nontraditional activities towards farmers' efforts to enhance their farm income. For farmers involved in direct marketing, a logit model is used to estimate the probability of attaining high income for each activity considered, selling of farm related value-added products, greenhouse operations and urban location of farm markets will increase the chance o attaining high income levels.

An Investigation of Equivalent Scales in Demand Using the 191 Latvian Household Budget Survey AgEcon

The 1991 Latvia household budget survey provided data for establishing basic information about food consumption levels and patterns in Latvia during the first year of major economic reforms. This study evaluates one aspect of economic decision making of households: how income is allocated for consumption of various broad categories of food items. The analysis uses the 1991 data to examine the importance of income and household composition on food expenditures. Estimated income elasticities for various food commodities suggest the magnitude of changes in real household income that have occurred in Latvia. CONSUMER PERCEPTIONS OF FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY: EVIDENCE FROM A SURVEY OF U.S. CONSUMERS AgEcon

This paper is a descriptive study of consumers’' self-reported knowledge, assumptions, and acceptance of genetically modified foods in the U.S. These findings are based on a national survey of consumers. Our findings demonstrate a rather low level of awareness among most Americans about bioengineered foods. Most Americans tend to view the use of biotechnology in food production with guarded optimism. While a majority believe that biotechnology will benefit many people, they also feel that the dangers of genetic modification warrant strict regulation of the technology. In general, there is greater support for the use of this technology in plants than in animals and in order to bring tangible benefits to consumers.
