COMPETITIVENESS AND CONSUMER PREFERENCES OF US FRUITS IN TAIWAN AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu; Wann, Joyce J..
Taiwan is a major importing country of US fruits. This study examines the market competitiveness and consumer preferences of US fruits in Taiwan using cross-sectional data. Results indicate that for either retailers or consumers, imported US fruits compete favorably with domestic grown fruits in the Taiwanese fruit markets.

Avian Influenza Threat and its Potential Impact on Demand for Chicken and Eggs AgEcon
Liu, Kang Ernest; Huang, Min-Hsin; Hsu, Jane Lu; Lee, Hwang-Jaw.
A highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza (AI) has been confirmed in 420 human cases and has caused 257 deaths in the world starting from 2003. Using face-to-face interviews, our data were collected by utilizing a stratified sampling scheme following the distribution of gender and age in three major metropolitan areas in Taiwan, including Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The questionnaire was designed to retrieve information including AI knowledge, risk perceptions, and behavioral changes of two types of consumers, primary shoppers and general consumers. In total, 501 primary shoppers and 505 general consumers completed the survey in June 2007 and were recorded for analysis. The empirical results show several interesting findings, especially, that...

Dynamic Analyses of Major Fruit Markets in Taiwan AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu; Su, Jyh-Luen.
Fruit production and consumption have increased considerably in the past few decades in Taiwan. Market prices of fruits fluctuate in response to seasonality, changes in production costs, imports and exports, and demand. Some factors are more influential to fruit price changes. This research utilizes the Vector Autoregressive Model to analyze effects of exogenous shocks to market prices of fruits. Dynamic models were developed for bananas, grapes, guavas, papayas, pineapples, and watermelons. For the market of bananas, prices of pesticides have delayed positive effects; an increase of watermelon prices raises the prices of bananas; prices of banana exports explain some variations of domestic banana prices. For the market of grapes, income, interest rates,...

Gradual Switching Structural Changes of Meat Consumption in Taiwan AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu.
This paper utilized a linear approximate version of the Almost Ideal Demand System to evaluate structural changes of meat consumption in Taiwan. Time transition paths for each product were identified and first-order autocorrelation was taken into consideration. Structural changes of beef consumption (1979-1984) were completed before structural changes of other products had started. Shifting in consumption patterns of pork (1990-1995) and poultry (1988-1994) took about the same time length. Structural changes of fishery products (1994-1996) occurred toward the end of the time period. With the gradual switching time paths, estimated elasticities show that own-price elasticities for pork, beef, and fishery products became more responsive to their own-price...

THE INFLUENCES OF AVIAN INFLUENZA, BSE, AND H1N1 INFLUENZA ON ATTITUDINAL CHANGES IN MEAT SAFETY ISSUES AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu; Liu, Kang Ernest; Lee, Hwang-Jaw; Huang, Min-Hsin; Hung, Kelsey Jing-Ru.
Consumption patterns for chicken and eggs have changed since the outbreak of the H5N1 avian influenza (AI) throughout the world, but its potential impact on demand has not been thoroughly unveiled. Our study examines some important factors influencing behavioral changes and estimates their marginal effects by employing the censored regression model to survey data in Taiwan. Results showed that risk perceptions, overall knowledge and some socio-demographic characteristics were profound in determining changes in consumption of chicken and eggs. Public health education programs informing consumers about the AI threat may reduce their negative perceptions; therefore, consumption of chicken and eggs would not be decreased significantly enough to damage related...

Effects of Fluid Milk Advertising in Taiwan AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu; Liu, Gary Shang-Min.
This study utilized the cluster analysis to examine effectiveness of fluid milk advertising in Taiwan. Consumers with different perceptions of advertising were grouped into three clusters. The “high-perception” cluster consisted of larger percentage of women at ages 26 to 35, with higher household income, and living in smaller households. The “low-perception” cluster consisted of more male, older people, with lower household income, and living in larger households. Consumers who were more sensitive to fluid milk advertising tended to consume more fluid milk after perceiving advertising.
