| Intra-industry trade in agri-food products between Hungary and the EU is shown to be low and dominated by vertically rather than horizontally differentiated products, suggesting higher economic adjustment costs. Following recent empirical studies, we then test econometrically for the determinants of this trade using different measures of horizontal and vertical trade, and employing an array of popular explanatory variables. Results suggest that separating the measure of intra-industry trade into vertical and horizontal provides for better estimation and supports the contention that the determinants may differ by type of trade. | This paper intends to shed some light upon the changes in farm incomes in Hungary as a result of the country’s accession to the EU in 2004. Subsidies for arable farms increased by 20 percent over three years. The highest degree of increase is observed in the case of arable farms. In terms of national farm subsidies the largest increase can also be identified in the case of large corporate arable and mixed farms. Nevertheless, it was found that the farm income level in Hungary is only half of that in the EU-25. |

| This paper, whilst preliminary and descriptive, highlights some significant changes in the structure of the Hungarian national farm around the time of EU accession, based on an examination of farm-level data. Between 2002 and 2005 gross value of total production changes little, but direct agricultural subsidies nearly double. There is a marked shift in favour of arable farming, which affects both private farms and economic organisations. Arable farms increase their share of total subsidies by 20 percentage points over the three years, at the expense of most animal and mixed farms. Overall, the distribution of subsidies, whilst highly unequal, is slightly less unequal in 2005. |

| We present an analysis of the intra-industry nature of agri-food trade between Hungary and the European Union, following the Association Agreement signed in 1991. A slight growth in intra-industry trade is indicated by the Grubel-Lloyd index. However, it is not uniform by product group or EU member state or over time, reflecting different patterns of bilateral integration and an economic restructuring process that is far from complete. Marginal intra-industry trade appears to be low, but assumes greater significance when the index is broadened to include vertical as well as horizontal trade. | We analyse the evolving pattern of Hungary's agri-food trade using recently developed empirical procedures based on the classic Balassa index and its symmetric transformation. The extent of trade specialisation exhibits a declining trend; Hungary lost comparative advantage for a number of product groups over the 1990s. The indices of specialisation have also tended to converge. For particular product groups, the picture is mixed: indices are reasonably stable for product groups with comparative disadvantage, but those with weak to strong comparative advantage show significant variation. | In this study, we employ the Harbinson proposal and July Framework to compare a ‘likely’ Doha scenario with an ‘inclusive’ baseline. The key aim is to assess the impacts across EU member states. More specifically, we (i) employ the latest version 6 of the GTAP database, (ii) explicitly model CAP mechanisms (e.g., quotas, decoupled payments, set-aside, CAP budget etc.) to more accurately assess the asymmetric trade led welfare effects on selected EU member states, and (iii) introduce binding overhangs into domestic support, export subsidies and more importantly market access commitments. | Over fifteen years have elapsed since the transition from the centrally planned economic system started in the early 1990’s. During this time agricultural and rural areas of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone profound structural changes with wide variations in the degree of transformation and in the rate of success in creating a competitive market and private ownership based food and agricultural system.
