Thusfar the genus Dacryodes, as far as the Australasian area is concerned, was only known to occur in Western Malaysia (including the Philippines), with a centre in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Only one, out of 13, species is extending towards Cochin China in the West and the Philippines and N. Celebes in the East and another is known from the Malay Peninsula, British N. Borneo and the Philippines (cf. the senior writer’s paper in Bull. Jard. Bot. Buitenzorg, sér. III, Vol. XII, 1932, 334—366). Thus, Dacryodes was so far considered one of the many exclusively or preponderantly west-malaysian genera which do not or hardly cross Wallace’s line. |

One of the important features of the mammal collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie is its wealth in old types. This is mainly due to the fact that the first director of the Museum, Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858), was one of the foremost mammalogists of his time, and during the entire period of his directorship (1820-1858) was very active in improving the mammal collection. He himself described numerous species based on material in the possession of the Museum, but he also acquired type specimens of species described by other zoologists, either through exchange or purchase, or as a gift. In his paper on the mammals of the islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire (situated off the north coast of Venezuela), WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (1940 a, p. 69) mentioned a juvenile specimen of a cricetine rodent which was identified by Mr. M. A. C. HINTON and Mr. R. W. HAYMAN as probably belonging to the genus Hesperomys. In his zoogeographical remarks on the mammalian fauna of the islands, WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (1940 b, p. 111) noted: “It is doubtful what significance may be attached to the occurrence of the small Cricetine Hesperomys? (launcha aff.) on Aruba, since this genus is southern in range, none being found in northern South America”. More than twenty years have elapsed since the senior author (H. J. Lam) recognized Haplolobus as a genus separate from Canarium. In the mean time much newly collected material has become available and in view of the intended revision for Flora Malesiana, the time has come to sum up our present knowledge. It must be said first of all that this knowledge, in spite of a considerable progress, is still far from satisfactory. Not only is much of the material sterile, but the genus however small it is, more and more proves to be an extremely difficult one to handle in a practicable way. Sherborn (1899) very ably discussed the four editions of Lacepède's "Tableaux des Mammifères et des Oiseaux" that were known to him, and made the complicated history of these publications clear. To these four editions we now can add two that evidently were not known to Sherborn, one of which must be exceedingly rare. In the following lines the six editions are discussed in chronological order; editions I, III, IV, and V have been dealt with by Sherborn, II and VI are those that we recently became acquainted with. In 1734 verscheen te Amsterdam het eerste deel van het klassiek geworden werk van Albertus Seba : Locupletissimi rerum naturalium Thesauri accurata descriptio, et iconibus artificiosissimis expressio, per universam physices historiam. In dit werk, vaak aangeduid alleen met de naam „Thesaurus", geeft Seba naast voor die tijd goede beschrijvingen prachtige gekleurde afbeeldingen van de behandelde voorwerpen. Tot de „rijkste schatten" van het dierenrijk rekent Seba ook twee kleurafwijkingen van de mol, Talpa europaea L., waarvan de eerste op pagina 51 wordt vermeld als: Talpa, alba, nostras [de witte mol van ons Vaderland]. The zoological collections made by the 1948—1949 Surinam Expedition contain about 200 mammals, brought together by the zoologists Dr. D. C. GEIJSKES and Mr. P. H. CREUTZBERG. Though the collection consists mainly of species which had already been reported from Dutch Guiana, it is of considerable value, in the first place on account of the detailed data concerning the localities, biotopes, and biology, and secondly because not only the skins and skulls of the collected specimens have been preserved but as a rule also their complete skeletons. No uniformity exists in the use of the scientific name for the Sperm Whale, one of the earliest known and most familiar of the whale species. Both the names Physeter macrocephalus Linnaeus, 1758, and Physeter catodon Linnaeus, 1758, have been widely used for it. Hershkovitz (1966: 116120) in his check-list of the Cetacea listed 18 references (1758-1964) to the specific epithet catodon (an epithet that he accepted himself) and 24 references (1758-1957) to macrocephalus; as only the most important literature was cited by Hershkovitz, the usage of both epithets is far greater. INTRODUCTION A recent study of the lectotype specimen of the Blaauwbok (Husson & Holthuis, 1969) had awakened our interest in this South African Antilope, which became extinct around 1800. One of us got the chance to procure a copy of the 1727 Dutch edition of Peter Kolb's account of Cape of Good Hope, a work containing the first description of the Blaauwbok. The study of this edition of Kolb's work lead to some interesting discoveries concerning the first published figures of the Blaauwbok and the Greater Kudu, which are discussed below. The present study is mainly based on material collected during the 19391940 Dutch New Guinea Expedition of the "Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap" (the Royal Netherlands Geographic Society) to the region of the Wissel Lakes in central West New Guinea. Professor Dr. H. Boschma, who was the zoologist of the expedition, then obtained 753 specimens of mammals. These specimens were mainly brought together by the natives of the region, who belong to the Kepaukoe tribe. In the period from 25 September to 20 November 1939 213 marsupials, 70 bats, 465 rodents, 2 New Guinea dogs and 3 skulls of the domestic New Guinea pig were collected in the neighbourhood of Enarotali and the Araboe bivouac. The present paper is based on a collection of bats from Tobago brought together by Mr. G. F. Mees. From July 1953 to March 1954 Mr. Mees stayed at the island of Trinidad, making occasional short visits to Tobago. Though his main attention was directed to the avifauna of these islands, he collected also several specimens of bats, those from Tobago being of special interest. The larger part of this material has been obtained by shooting. After collecting the specimens were immediately placed in a refrigerator and were sent in a frozen condition to the Leiden Museum, where they finally were prepared. So far as we know, all Burseraccae have been described as shrubs or trees, ranging from small and slender to very lofty. Some recently discovered material, however, pointed at the possibility that scandent representatives, if perhaps not true lianes, are not entirely lacking in the family. The first specimen intimating this habit to have come to our knowledge was collected by J. & M. S. Clemens on Mt. Kinabalu in British North Borneo, with the emphatic addition “surely scandent”. This specimen is almost certainly a Dacryodes in the relationship of rugosa (Bl.) H. J. Lam, var. virgata (Bl.) H. J. Lam. It appeared to deserve specific rank and it has been described by the junior writer underneath as D. scandens. Full particulars are give there. |

In a revision of vespertilionid bats the late Dr. G. H. H. Tate (1941, pp. 581-582) after examination of the skull of cotype "a" of Vespertilio Ivarpia in the collection of the Leiden Museum, originally described by Temminck (1840, pp. 219-220, pi. 55 figs. 5-6), arrived at the following conclusion: "It becomes clear, upon later study of photograph and notes, that the skull was that of Myotis sp., and not a Harpiocephalus at all.... The knowledge of the fauna of Suriname is of essential importance in the study of the neotropical Mammalia. The first publications containing information on mammals of Suriname appeared very early in the history of European exploration of South America. Such publications were relatively numerous in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands was at the peak of its power, and Suriname was one of its richest colonies. The systematic position of the western hamster, Cricetus cricetus canescens, has been a subject of discussion and criticism ever since NEHRING (1899, pp. 1—2) described the hamster occurring in Belgium west of the Meuse as a separate variety.
