A wide distributional range species can constitute many populations or fishing stocks which can be whole or partly overlapped within their distribution area, reason why they must be clearly identified. Therefore, proper identification of stocks is necessary for fisheries management, as this is the unit to which the fishing effort should be applied. The parasitological method is one of the systems currently used to determine stock. Nematodes parasites of Macruronus magellanicus (longtail hake) collected during surveys enmarked between 45º S-55º S in the Southwest Atlantic were studied. Parasites nematodes as biological tags of Macruronus magellanicus (longtail hake) and Merluccius hubbsi (hake) colleted between 34°- 55°S in the SW Atlantic were studied. Adult specimens of Hysterothylacium aduncum, Ascarophis marina and Ichthytofilaria argentinensis, and the third-stage specimens of H. aduncum, Anisakis simplex and Contracaecum aduncum were described. Histological studies showed that I. argentinensis provokes tissue reactions in the swim bladder of M. hubbsi. A wide distributional range of species can be represented by many fish populations or fishing stocks. An assessment survey on the austral fish was carried out during the summer 1997 on both the shelf and slope off southern Argentina. The cruise covered 101,508 nm2 between 45° and 54° 30'S and depths between 50 and 400 m. The survey did not include the area controlled by the United Kingdom. Considering the total area as an undivided stratum, a random sampling was used to estimate demersal fish biomass and a delta distribution-based model to evaluate mean densities. Out of the forty five species caught 28 were bony fish and 17 elasmobranch. Four cephalopod mollusc species were also identified. A biomass of 3.2 million tons (CI(95o/o): 1.90 - 6.06 millions) proved that longtail hake was the most abundant resource within the region followed by common hake...
