Drought Tolerance in Recombinant Chromosome Substitution Lines (RCSLs) Derived from the Cross Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum (Caesarea 26-24) × Hordeum. vulgare subsp. vulgare cv. Harrington 113
Inostroza,Luis; del Pozo,Alejandro; Matus,Iván; Hayes,Patrick.
Grain yield (GY) and drought tolerance of recombinant chromosome substitution lines (RCSLs) derived from the cross between Hordeum vulgareL.subsp. spontaneum (K. Koch) Thell. and H. vulgare L. subsp. vulgare cv. Harrington, were studied in two contrasting environments, one with water stress (WWS) and the other with no water stress (NWS), during three growing seasons, 2004-2005, 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. In the first season 80 RCSLs were sowed and in the following a selection of 13 RCSLs. An a-lattice design was used in all the experiments. With the data of GY obtained in sites WWS and NWS it was calculated the drought sensitivity index (DSI). During 2004-2005 growing season GY varied greatly among locations, reflecting differences in water availability. The...

Phosphorus absorption and use efficiency by Lotus spp. under water stress conditions in two soils: A pot experiment 117
Castillo,Carolina; Acuña,Hernán; Zagal,Erick; Inostroza,Luis.
The response to P and water deficiencies of forage Lotus species has not been sufficiently studied in the Andisol and Vertisol soil orders in Chile's marginal areas. A pot experiment under cover was carried out between October 2007 and March 2008 to study the effects of P and soil water availability (SWA) on DM production, P absorption, and P use efficiency in Lotus spp. The experiment included three Lotus (L. corniculatus L., L. tenuis Waldst. & Kit. ex Willd., and L. uliginosus Schkuhr) species, two soils (Andisol and Vertisol), two contrasting P levels (low and high), and two SWA levels (10% and 100%). A completely randomized design with a 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with four replicates was used. Accumulated shoot and root DM, P...

Seedling vigor variation among 80 recombinant chromosome substitution lines (RCSL) of barley (Hordeum vulgare) 118
Inostroza,Luis; Quezada,Celerino; Inostroza,Wladimir; Matus,Iván; Tapia,Maritza; del Pozo,Alejandro.
The seedling vigor of 80 barley recombinant chromosome substitution lines (RCSLs) was measured for selecting high seedling vigor genotypes. The RCSLs were derived from a cross between H. vulgare subsp. spontaneum and H. vulgare subsp. vulgare 'Harrington'. The work was carried out under greenhouse conditions during the summer of 2008. The experimental design was an alpha lattice with 3 replicates. In each replicate, 40 plants were established, distributed in eight polyethylene pots containing sand as substrate, which were fertilized an irrigated. The emergence of seedlings, number of leaves and shoots, dry matter of leaves, shoots and roots and leaf area of fully expanded leaves were measured. In addition, growth indices were calculated: emergence rate,...
