Descriptions and illustrations are given of four species of mailed catfishes belonging to the subfamily Loricariinae, tribe Harttiini. Two species are assigned to Lamontichthys P. de Miranda Ribeiro, 1939: Lamontichthys filamentosus (La Monte, 1935) (type-species, of which Harttia filamentissima C. H. Eigenmann & Allen, 1942, is provisionally considered a junior synonym), based on a total of thirteen specimens, including all type-specimens, from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador (all from tributaries of the Rio Amazonas system), and Lamontichthys stibaros n. sp., based on two specimens from Ecuador, sympatric with the former species. Harttia microps C. H. Eigenmann & Allen, 1942, is redescribed from three out of the five type-specimens,... |

This article contains figures and descriptions of Loricaria cataphracta Linnaeus, 1758, sensu stricto (neotype), Loricaria cirrhosa Bloch & Schneider, 1801 [identical with L. cataphracta] (lectotype and paralectotype), Loricaria flagellaris (Gronovius, 1854) (holotype), Loricaria carinata de Castelnau, 1855 (holotype), and Loricaria lata Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889, sensu stricto (lectotype and paralectotypes, in part). Another part of the paralectotype series of Loricaria lata represents another species, described but not named below, which eventually may prove not to belong to the genus Loricaria. The ultimate status of L. flagellaris and of L. carinata remains uncertain, there being too few additional data. In addition to L. cirrhosa, L.... |

The type species of the genus Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862, Loricariichthys maculatus (Bloch, 1794), is redescribed from two syntypes, one of which is designated the lectotype. The same specimen is also designated the neotype for Plecostomus cataphracta Gronovius (ed. Gray), 1854 (non Loricaria cataphracta Linnaeus, 1758, sensu stricto). The type locality of both nominal species is restricted after a comparison to specimens recently collected from a locality in Surinam. |

Pseudohemiodon thorectes, a new species of Mailed Catfish of the subfamily Loricariinae, is described and figured after the holotype (the only known specimen), originating from Buena Vista, west of Rio Palacios, a tributary of Rio Mamoré, Bolivia. The relationships of the new species with the others of the genus Pseudohemiodon are discussed, and a preliminary key to the nominal species and subspecies is given. |

Dentectus barbarmatus, a new genus and species of mailed catfish of the subfamily Loricariinae, tribe Loricariini, is described from tributaries of the northern margin of the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Morphometric and meristic data of several specimens are presented and illustrations are given. The relationships of the new genus with other genera of the tribe are discussed. It is assigned to the subtribe Planiloricariina, together with Pseudohemiodon Bleeker, 1862, Rhadinoloricaria Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1974, Crossoloricaria Isbrücker, 1979, and Planiloricaria Isbrücker, 1971. |

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus (Kner, 1854) is redescribed and figured after examination of 132 specimens from the Rio Amazonas, Essequibo River, and Rio Paraguai systems, including five syntypes, from which the lectotype is selected. Reganella depressa (Kner, 1854) is redescribed and figured after examination of 7 specimens from the Rio Amazonas system, including two syntypes, from which the lectotype is selected. Relationships of the monotypic genera Hemiodontichthys Bleeker, 1862, and Reganella Eigenmann, 1905 with other genera are briefly discussed. |

This publication presents a catalogue of the taxa of the neotropical family Loricariidae, the mailed catfishes, including about 600 described species and 70 genera. An attempt is made to assign each species to its proper genus and to arrange the genera into an approximate phylogenetic order. Numerous new combina tions have become necessary. A new tribe, consisting of two new subtribes, and three new genera are herein established. Notes on type-material, recorded in the literature subsequent to an original description, are added. Literature references aim to include all publications containing original descriptions and proposals of new names. |

This paper deals with two genera of loricariid fishes: Rhadinoloricaria gen. nov., and Planiloricaria Isbrücker, 1971. Rhadinoloricaria is established for the species macromystax, described by Günther (1869: 426) in the binomen Loricaria macromystax. Planiloricaria, elevated to generic rank in the present paper, was described by Isbrücker as a subgenus of the genus Pseudohemiodon Bleeker, 1862, for the new species cryptodon (Isbrücker, 1971: 278). Diagnoses of these two monotypic genera are given, together with redescriptions and figures of their type-species. The relationships with other genera within the subfamily Loricariinae are discussed. A provisional subdivision into six genus-groups is given, and a new subfamily name, Acestridiinae, is proposed for... |

The South American callichthyid catfish genus Aspidoras R. von Ihering, 1907, is redefined on the basis of thirteen nominal species. Morphological differences with the related genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, are discussed. Two species originally described in Corydoras, viz., Corydoras raimundi and Corydoras pauciradiatus are herein transferred to Aspidoras. Aspidoras now consists of the following previously described nominal species: (1) Aspidoras rochai R. von Ihering, 1907 (type-species of the genus), known from Brazil, Est. Ceará, Fortaleza, (2) Aspidoras raimundi (Steindachner, 1907) from Brazil, Est. Maranhão, Rio Parnaíba system, (3) Aspidoras lakoi P. de Miranda Ribeiro, 1949, from Brazil, Est. Minas Gerais, Rio Paranaíba system, and (4) Aspidoras... |

Hypopygus lepturus Hoedeman, 1062, was hitherto known from the holotype and one paratype only, both imported aquarium specimens. In this paper the type locality of the species is restricted. Additional distributional data from Surinam are given, together with records on the occurrence of H. lepturus in Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and on the very likely occurrence in Peru. Comparative notes on Steatogenys elegans (Steindachner, 1880) sensu Boulenger, 1898, are added because of the similar appearance of both species. The synonymy of Tateichthys duidae La Monte, 1929, with Steatogenys elegans is established. |

Three new species belonging to two different genera of South American mailed catfishes of the subfamily Loricariinae are described and figured. A discussion of and comparative notes on related species are added. Rineloricaria formosa n. sp. is described from the Río Inírida/Río Orinoco drainage in Colombia, from the Río Atabapo (Río Orinoco drainage) in Venezuela, and from the Rio Tiquié and Rio Uaupés (Rio Amazonas drainage) in Brazil. It is compared with Rineloricaria morrowi Fowler, 1940, with Rineloricaria melini (Schindler, 1959), and with Rineloricaria fallax (Steindachner, 1915). The lectotype of the latter species is herein designated, and a discussion on the misidentification of R. fallax with Loricariichthys brunneus (Hancock, 1828) is added.... |
