Organic Farm incomes in England and Wales 2004-05(OF 0189) Organic Eprints
Jackson, A; Lampkin, N.
Results from research work carried out for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) by the Organic Research Group at the Institute of Rural Sciences, UWA on the economic performance of organic farms in 2004/05 are presented in this report. This report is the last of a series1 of four on organic farm incomes from 2001/02 through to 2004/05 as part of project OF0189. The main aim of this work is to assess the financial performance of organic farms differentiated by farm type, in order to inform DEFRA policy-making with respect to economics of organic farming, and to provide a basis for assessments by farmers, advisers and other interested parties of the farm-level implications of conversion to and continued organic farming. Sustainability assessment for organic farming - integrating financial, environmental, social and animal welfare benchmarking Organic Eprints
Lampkin, N; Fowler, S M; Jackson, A; Jeffreys, I; Lobley, M; Measures, M; Padel, S; Reed, M; Roderick, S; Woodward, L.
Real improvement in agricultural sustainability requires that its assessment should involve more than monitoring changes for research and policy evaluation purposes. Producers need practical information and guidance on how to change their systems to affect non-fi nancial and fi nancial outcomes. Recent organic farming benchmarking projects have shown how practical tools can be developed with the participation of stakeholders: these include farm income and fi nancial benchmarking projects at University of Wales, Aberystwyth; animal welfare assessments at Duchy College; socio-economic foot-printing at the University of Exeter; and fi rst attempts to combine the different elements including environmental aspects by Mark Measures Associates and Elm Farm...

Financial performance of organic farms in England and Wales Organic Eprints
Jackson, A; Lampkin, N.
A survey of farm fi nancial data on 135 organic farms in England and Wales in 2003/04 (as part of an ongoing annual survey) shows that for most farm types, organic farmers achieve similar or higher incomes than similar conventional holdings. Although organic farmers rely on premium prices to compensate for lower yields, overall performance has been maintained despite downward pressure on prices in the period under review. However, all farms, organic and conventional, showed generally poor returns. With organic prices increasing in most areas in 2005, it is likely that significant improvements in performance will result.
