Eocene sedimentation in the Southern Bight of the intracratonic North Sea Basin is determined by its ramp margin setting. Lithofacies analysis of siliciclastic shallow marine sediments enables reconstruction of sedimentation model in relation to relative sea level changes. Two major sedimentary cycles composed of sequences of metric to decametric thickness can be discerned. The lower transgressive/regressive cycle evidences 3 sedimentary environments. Lowermost Eocene sediment units are mainly clayey, display an overall fining upward trend an are deposited on a mud shelf. A delta prograding out on the continental shelf deposits middle to upper Lower Eocene units, gradually becoming more sandy. Middle Eocene sediments are mainly sandy, contain calcarenite... |

The most recent detailed geological map of Belgium (scale 1:40000) dates from the turning of the century. The Belgian Geological Survey and the Directorate of Natural Resources and Energy of the Flemish Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned a new geological map scale (1:50000) to the Geological Institutes of the Universities of Gent and Leuven, to be drawn on basis of the archives of the Geological Survey, completed with data provided by licenciate and Ph.D. theses, publications, internal reports,… As it was the commissioners' aim the new geological map to have a greater applicability and to be highly user friendly, the option was taken to adopt lithostratigraphical units as the basal mapping units, enabling secondary economical and planning survey... |

Detailed chemical and X-ray analysis of representative clay fraction samples from the Maldegem and Zelzate Formations (Middle and Upper Eocene) in western Belgium reveal a rather constant clay mineralogy, consisting mainly of kaolinite, smectitic minerals (of the nontronite type) and illite. Glauconite occurs in two different forms, the coarser grained being better crystallized. Local climatic or landscape conditions as inferred from the qualitative clay mineralogical suite point towards a shallow marine sedimentary environment in transgressive phase. A low relief restricted drainage area delivered kaolinite to the basin under moderate weathering conditions, transforming volcanic ash layers into smectites. |

In Palaeogene times, the 'Southern Bight' of the North Sea functioned as an intracratonic, shallow-marine, siliciclastic basin and accumulated a few meters of gently dipping sediment packages. A fine-scale seismic-stratigraphical model for the Palaeogene was formulated on the basis of a dense, high-resolution reflection seismic grid. In total 13 major seismic-stratigraphical units were defined, based on geometry and seismic facies characteristics. The seismic stratigraphy has been complemented with the results of four cored wells near the Belgian coast, containing a nearly continuous, 200m thick sediment succession of Eocene age. Facies analysis of these cores suggest that part of these sediments were deposited on a muddy shelf and part in a delta... |

The distribution of heavy minerals in Middle to Upper Eocene deposits of western Belgium is discussed with reference to ternary diagrams based on density (<3.4; 3.4-4.2; >4.2) and mineralogical composition (ubiquist, parametamorphic and garnet-epidote-amphibole-pyroxene groups). A corresponding diamond diagram is used to interpret the transport mode and the energy of the sedimentary environment. The Aalter Formation (middle Eocene), which was deposited in a quiet to turbulent setting, contains high amounts of ubiquists, parametamorphic minerals and garnets, with a minor epidote and amphibole content. The Maldegem Formation (middle to late Eocene) of deltaic origin, is characterized by the dominance of ubiquists, particularly in the sands and silts.... |

The Belgian sector of the Southern Bight of the North Sea stands as a copy-book example of a shallow marine siliciclastic intracratonic sedimentary basin with a ramp type margin setting, characterized by low subsidence rates, relative tectonic quiescence, and a low gradient relief. Clastic sediment supply resulting of erosion by constant southern Alpine uplift, origins from a proto-Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt river drainage system, gradually infilling the basin. The mainly deltaic sedimentation system gives rise to (offshore and onshore) Tertiary onlapping and shallowing upward sedimentary series of metric to decametric thickness with a dip to the NNE of less than 5%.To identify the offshore seismostratigraphical units introduced on basis of 16,000 km of high... |
