Reduce the Nitrogen Loss and Maintain the income – The Economics of Manure Handling AgEcon

In this paper, an economic analysis of different ways to cover the slurry tank and apply the slurry to the field has been carried out. It is found that covering slurry tanks with either straw or a floating lid is profitable. New field application techniques have become more profitable since an N-norm of 10% under the economic optimum was adopted in Denmark. This has increased the shadow price of nitrogen. When applying animal manure, injection is a profitable alternative to trailing hoses in spring crops before sowing and in many forage crops, as it gives higher yields and sometimes also higher protein content. An Economic and Environmental Analysis of Slurry Separation AgEcon

With increased pressure to redistribute animal manure in order to lower the environmental pressure from agriculture, it seems obvious to consider processing slurry into nutrient rich fractions which can easily be transported. In this paper, an overall analysis of four different separation technologies is presented. The four technologies are Decanter, Funki Manura 2000, Green Farm Energy and Staring. These technologies are all implemented on a full scale in Denmark. In this paper both the economic and environmental aspects are considered, looking at the entire chain from stable to the field. Reducing Nutrient Losses in Europe and Implications for Farming - In the Light of the Water Framework Directive AgEcon

An analysis for the implementation of the Nitrate Directive in the EU indicates that probably only three of 15 countries have implemented the directive satisfactorily. These countries are Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Austria, however other countries are in the process of getting their implementation accepted. As an example, the Netherlands has been forced to abandon the MINAS system in order to get its implementation accepted by the EU. The continues by describing the costs related to implementation of the Aquatic Plan II in Denmark. The costs have been calculated to 70 million € or 2,0 € per kg N in reduced leaching. Costs of Reducing Nutrient Losses in Denmark - Analyses of Different Regulation Systems and Cost Effective Measures AgEcon

The economic calculations carried out prior to the Plan for the Aquatic Environment III included a comparison of regulation systems aimed at reducing nitrogen leaching, analyses of measures for reducing phosphorus losses and estimation of administrative costs. The conclusions were that taxation of the N-surplus introduced at the sector level was the most cost effective regulation when compared with administrative regulation and set a side. For phosphorus a balance between incoming and outgoing phosphorus is very costly as this requires that much slurry is transported from the western to the eastern part of Denmark.
