We investigate the water entry and water exit phenomena experimentally and theoretically. We propose an experimental technique based on the use of transparent mockups and tangential LED lighting systems. This technique makes it possible to follow the contact surface during both the entry and exit phases. We show its feasbiliy for flat plates (square, circular disc, ellipse) and three-dimensional bodies (cone, sphere). The hydrodynamic force evolutions measured during the experiments are compared to numerical simulations (CFD) and to analytical results based on the modified Logvonovich model (MLM). An original experimental technique based on light diffusion in a transparent mock-up is proposed for the tracking of the boundary of the surface of contact between the solid and the water. The feasability of the technique is shown by studying three bodies : a circular disc, an elliptic disc and a square plate. The results obtained for the circular disc are compared to results obtained with the CFD software ABAQUS and the analytical model of Korobkin (2013). As long as there is no flow separation, linearised Wagner's theory combined with the modified Logvinovich model has been shown to provide computationally fast and reliable estimates of slamming loads during water entry. Tassin et al. [11] introduced the fictitious body continuation (FBC) concept as a way to extend the use of Wagner's model to separated flow configurations, but they only considered symmetric bodies. In the present study, we investigate the ability of the FBC concept to provide accurate estimates of slamming loads for asymmetric bodies.
