Belemnitellid coleoids (Mollusca, Cephalopoda) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
Belemnitellid coleoids abound at some levels within the Gulpen and Maastricht formations in the study area, and ‘belemnite graveyards’ have long been known from the Bovenste Bos (Epen) and Slenaken-Beutenaken areas in southern Limburg, the Netherlands. Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of at least three species of the genus Belemnitella d’Orbigny, 1840, and five of Belemnella Nowak, 1913, and its subgenera Belemnella, Pachybelemnella Schulz, 1979, and Neobelemnella Naidin, 1975. Representatives of Belemnitella junior Nowak, 1913, and Belemnella (Neobelemnella) gr. kazimiroviensis (Skołozdrówna, 1932) are the only coleoids to reach the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, and members of the latter group may even have persisted into the earliest...

A Late Cretaceous gastropod homing scar (possibly ichnogenus Lacrimichnus) from southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. Despite the wealth of available hard substrates...

A partial braincase and other skeletal remains of Oligocene angel sharks (Chondrichthyes, Squatiniformes) from northwest Belgium, with comments on squatinoid taxonomy Naturalis
Mollen, F.H.; Bakel , B.W.M. van; Jagt, J.W.M..
A detailed redescription of a chondrocranium from the basal Boom Clay Formation (Rupelian, Upper Oligocene) at the SVK clay pit, Sint-Niklaas (province of Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium), previously assigned to the sawshark Pristiophorus rupeliensis, is presented. The chondrocranium is re-identified as that of an angel shark (Squatinidae), based on comparative anatomy of extant Squatina, inclusive of CT scans of Squatina africana, S. australis, S. dumeril, S. guggenheim and S. squatina, with different geographic distributions and representing all four angel shark clades as defined in a previous molecular study. Differential characters for chondrocrania listed in earlier accounts to discriminate angel shark species from the southwest Atlantic proved to be even...

An additional record of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt from the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) of southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Jagt, J.W.M..
A single example of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt, infesting the holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske), is reported from the upper Meerssen Member, Maastricht Formation (uppermost Maastrichtian), of the former Blom quarry, Berg en Terblijt, southern Limburg, The Netherlands. This is the first evidence that O. excavatus may be more widely distributed in the type area of the Maastrichtian than previously assumed. The embedment structure occurs just below the ambitus and close to the peristome, suggesting that the producing organism may have been ingesting detritus from the sea floor rather than filter feeding, the more usual interpretation of its behaviour.

Stratigraphy of the type Maastrichtian – a synthesis Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Jagt-Yazykova, E.A..
A synthesis of the stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian Stage in its extended type area, that is, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), and adjacent Belgian and German territories, is presented with a brief historical overview. Quarrying activities at the large quarry complex of ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group will officially come to an end on July 1, 2018. However, the stratotype section below the Lichtenberg farmstead and directly behind the main office building at the Lage Kanaaldijk (Maastricht), will be preserved, as will various faces within the quarry complex. Strata of Maastrichtian age include the Vijlen, Lixhe 1-3 and Lanaye members of the Gulpen Formation, as well as the Valkenburg, Gronsveld, Schiepersberg, Emael, Nekum and Meerssen members of the...

Dentaliids (Mollusca, Scaphopoda) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Jagt, J.W.M..
Scaphopods remain poorly known from the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage in northeast Belgium and the southeast Netherlands. At least three species appear to be represented, but incomplete preservation (i.e., lack of shell material) hampers a detailed systematic treatment of most specimens. In museum collections, the name Dentalium nysti Binkhorst van den Binkhorst, 1861 (= D. binkhorsti Pilsbry & Sharp, 1898; non D. nysti d’Orbigny, 1852) is often used rather indiscriminately for both genuine scaphopods and internal moulds of serpulid worm tubes. Here, we describe and illustrate Antalis? binkhorsti, Fissidentalium? sp. 1 and Dentaliidae sp. indet., all of Maastrichtian age, as well as a late Campanian form, Fissidentalium? sp. 2.

Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: New data on mid-Cretaceous dromioid crabs (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura) from northwest Germany and southwest Iran Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Bakel, B.W.M. van; Fraaije, R.H.B.; Neumann, C..
A single, slightly laterally compressed carapace of a dromioid crab from the middle/upper Albian part of the Kazhdumi Formation in the Hamiran area (Hormozgan Province, southwest Iran) is described as a new species, which is tentatively assigned to the brachyuran genus Distefania Checchia-Rispoli, 1917, D.(?) tangishirazensis. This constitutes the first record of the genus from the Middle East. In addition, from the long-defunct Rauen quarry at Kassenberg, near Mülheim-Broich (northwest Germany), a carapace of D. incerta and a rather battered cheliped of the ‘form genus’ Roemerus Bishop, 1983 are recorded from the upper Cenomanian portion of that section, thus adding to previous records of these taxa from Germany.

A case of homonymy in fossil verrucid barnacles: Verruca withersi (Crustacea, Thoracica) Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Buckeridge, J.S..
For fossil verrucid barnacles, the name Verruca withersi appears to have been used twice; Schram & Newman described material from the Albian-Cenomanian (Cretaceous) of Colombia, while Kruizinga had previously recorded a new species from the Pleistocene(?) or perhaps younger strata of Sumba (Indonesia). We do not consider V. withersi Schram & Newman to be a cirripede, therefore no replacement name is needed for this junior synonym. Verruca withersi Kruizinga is a valid species related to the extant V. cookei.

Late Cretaceous-Early Palaeogene echinoderms and the K/T boundary in the southeast Netherlands and northeast Belgium — Part 4: Echinoids Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
All Campanian, Maastrichtian and Danian echinoids known to date from the extended type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are listed and, with a few exceptions, also illustrated. The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of these echinoderms are documented. A total of 55 (sub)genera and 119 (sub)species (inclusive of formae), two of which are new, are recognised. A number of taxa are reassigned, while others have to remain in open nomenclature for the time being. Recorded for the first time from the area are representatives of Hagenowia and Zeuglopleurus, as well as juvenile specimens of Hemipneustes striatoradiatus. Cidaris gigas (= Temnocidaris (Stereocidaris) gigas) is accepted as a valid species. The name Cyphosoma rutoti is shown to be based on the...

Late Cretaceous ophiuroids in the Binkhorst Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, reassessed Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Neumann, C..
A small lot of latest Cretaceous brittlestars from the Maastrichtian type area, contained in the Binkhorst [van den Binkhorst] Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, is restudied and, in part, illustrated for the first time. Presumably, these thirteen specimens represent only a portion of the ophiuroid material referred to in two papers by Binkhorst van den Binkhorst, both published in 1859, because all are assignable to two species which are common only in the Nekum and Meerssen members of the type Maastrichtian, namely Felderophiura vanderhami Jagt, 1991, and Ophiomusium lux Jagt & Kutscher in Jagt, 2000. Brittlestar material from lower levels within the Maastricht Formation (i.e., Valkenburg, Gronsveld, Schiepersberg and Emael members)...

Late Cretaceous-Early Palaeogene echinoderms and the K/T boundary in the southeast Netherlands and northeast Belgium — Part 6: Conclusions Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
The palaeobiology of echinoderms occurring in the Meerssen and Geulhem members is discussed and changes in diversity across the K/T boundary are documented. Using literature data on the ecology of extant faunas, the various echinoderm groups are considered. Naturally, such data can only be applied with due caution to fossil forms, whose skeletal morphology is often incompletely known. This holds especially true for asteroids, ophiuroids, and crinoids, which, upon death, rapidly disintegrate into jumbles of dissociated ossicles. Bioturbation, scavenging, and current winnowing all contribute to blurring the picture still further. However, data on extant forms do allow a preliminary subdivision of fossil species into various ecological groups, which are...

Jagt, J.W.M.; Fraaije, R.H.B.; Bakel, B.W.M. van.
Strata of latest Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian) and earliest Paleogene (early Paleocene) age in the (extended) type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are comparatively rich in decapod crustaceans. Particularly common are chelae of the callianassoid Mesostylus faujasi (Desmarest, 1822), followed by carapaces of various species of necrocarcinid and raninid, plus the ?longusorbiid Binkhorstia ubaghsii (van Binkhorst, 1857) and chelae of paguroids; other taxa are much rarer. Recently collected material, all stratigraphically well constrained, has enabled us to reinterpret, and reassign, a number of species. Specimens contained in old museum collections have proved indispensable in that respect. Undescribed taxa have also come to light; here a new dromioid,...

Late Cretaceous bourgueticrinid crinoids from southern Poland – preliminary observations Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Salamon, M.A..
Dissociated skeletal elements of bourgueticrinid crinoids, comprising mostly columnals, radicular cirri, a few cups and some brachials, are recorded from Turonian-Maastrichtian strata of southern Poland (Miechów Trough, Kraków-Cze˛stochowa Upland, Holy Cross Mountains and Opole Trough). Published records of bourgueticrinids from Poland are surprisingly few; only specifically indeterminate columnals, radicular cirri and a sole proximale, plus a single cup of Bourgueticrinus utriculatus have been noted. The present material, although limited, clearly demonstrates that these crinoids must have been less rare than anticipated and are, in fact, distributed throughout the entire Upper Cretaceous sequence in this area. The majority of bourgueticrinids had an...

Fossils of the type Maastrichtian Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Donovan, S.K.; Jagt-Yazykova, E.A..
The south-western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the microcontinent of Madagascar, are geologically complex and diverse. They have been subject to drastic sea level changes, volcanic events and anthropogenic changes, all of which have contributed to confuse understanding of their avian biogeography. An array of factors have affected these avifaunas, based on palaeontological, historical and molecular evidence, which together have shown that avian biogeography is not congruent with the relative age and size of the islands.
