Reproductive cycle of edible echinoderms from the Southwestern Indian Ocean: I. Tripneustes gratilla L. (Echinoidea, Echinodermatata) OceanDocs
Vaïtilingon, D.; Rasolofonirina, R.; Jangoux, M..
The reproductive cycle of the edible echinoid Tripneustes gratilla (Linneaus 1758) was investigated in a population located in the southwest coast of Madagascar (Toliara). The reproductive cycle was followed for two consecutive years (October 1999 to October 2001) and characterised by means of gonad and maturity indices. T. gratilla has an annual reproductive cycle mediated by seawater temperature, day length and feeding activity. The histology of the gonads revealed six different maturity stages grouped in three main reproductive phases: growing and maturing, spawning, and spent and recovering. Reproduction is seasonal. Growing and maturing stages occurred from late summer to early winter correlating with decreasing temperatures and day length. Spawning...

Reproductive cycle of edible echinoderms from the South-Western Indian Ocean: II. The sandfish Holothuria scabra (Jaëger, 1833) OceanDocs
Vaïtilingon, D.; Rasolofonirina, R.; Eeckhaut, I.; Jangoux, M..
The reproductive cycle and gonad morphology were investigated in a population of Holothuria scabra (Jaëger, 1833) from Toliara, south-west of Madagascar. Surveys were done from November 1998 to April 2001 by monthly samplings of 30 individuals. There is a single gonad formed by a tuft of numerous ramified tubules. The annual reproductive cycle of the population was determined from monthly variations of the gonad index and the maturity index. Five sexual maturity stages were described. An annual reproductive cycle occurred with most individuals being mature or spawning between November and April. Gametogenesis was not synchronous in the population, but was synchronous in all the tubules of a single gonad except the smallest immature ones (length < 1 cm)....

Catalogue commenté des types d'Echinodermes actuels conservés dans les collections nationales belges OMA
Jangoux, M.; Massin, C..
The national zoological collections of Belgium house 434 types-specimens representing 64 nominal species of recent echinoderms (2crinoids, 21 holothuroids, 6 echinoids, 17 asteroids and 18 ophiuroids). Each species is presented (original name, current statute, museum characteristics, brief bibliography). A new synonymy is proposed for two species of asteroids.

Echinodermes: Astéroïdes OMA
Jangoux, M..
The collection of starfishes collected in 1976, during the MUSORSTOM cruise off Philippine Islands, includes 36 species. One genus (<i>Pseudoceramaster</i>) and four species (<i>Cheiraster capillatus, Iconaster elegans, Pseudoceramaster regularis, Stellaster convexus</i>) are described as new. Most of the other specimens belong to poorly known species; several of them are recorded here for the second time.

Le genre <i>Neoferdina</i> Livingstone (Echinodermata, Asteroidea: Ophidiasteridae) OMA
Jangoux, M..
8 spp of <<i>Neoferdina</i> were described between 1840 and 1936 and only 3 of them are certainly valid: <i>N. cumingi</i> (Gray),<i>N. offreti</i> (Koehler) and <i>N. glyptodisca</i> (Fisher). Among the others, <i>N. intermedia</i> (Djakonov) is conspecific with <i>N. offreti</i>, and <i>N. cancellata</i> (Grube) is conspecific with <i>N. cumingi</i<. The statute of <i>N. ocellata</i> (H.L. Clark) is discussed and for several reasons this species must be also considered as a synonym of <i>N. cumingi</i>. The type of <i>N. kuhli</i> (Muller et Troschel), the only specimen known, has been lost and, as the author's diagnosis...
