The Economic Impact of CRP Acres in South Dakota Returning to Crop Production AgEcon
Taylor, Gary; Janssen, Larry.
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) was created in the 1985 Farm Bill as a program to remove highly erodible and environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production for 10-15 years. Originally viewed as a supply control program it rapidly evolved into a program that met many environmental objectives. In 2007 SD had 729,397 acres of CRP contracts expired, which was nearly 47% of the 1.56 million acres enrolled. The policy environment in late 2006 and most of 2007 consisted of CRP program offers for renewals or extensions (2-5 years) of many CRP contracts against a backdrop of escalating crop prices and economic incentives to return expiring contract acres to agricultural production. Overall there was a net reduction of 263.7 thousand acres (17%)...

An Economic Analysis of No-Till Rotations and Effects on Carbon Sequestration and Long Term Sustainability of Agriculture AgEcon
Janssen, Larry; Harer, Justin.
This study summarizes key economic results from 100 different no-till (NT) crop rotations and a conventional (CT) corn-soybean rotation based on agronomic data from Brookings County, South Dakota for 2001 -2008. A 1200 acre model crop farm was constructed to conduct the farm management budget and simulation analyses. Results indicate: (1) the CT rotation had the highest average net returns, (2) Several four-crop no-till rotations were preferred as producer risk aversion increased, and (3) carbon credit payments would need to be $14 to $36 per acre for the top four NT rotations to be as profitable as the CT rotation.

This report provides information on the importance of farmland leasing in South Dakota and updates information on crop-share leasing and hay-share leasing arrangements, based on a survey conducted in 2011. An estimated 23% of SD cropland acres rented are in crop-share leases. Survey results indicate the prevalence of four common crop share arrangements in South Dakota. Most crop-share lease respondents reported the landlord and renter sharing expenses for one or more variable inputs, with the number and type of shared input expenses varying by region and output share.

ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF CROPSHARE AND CASH LEASE CONTRACTS IN SOUTH DAKOTA AND NEBRASKA AgEcon
Janssen, Larry; Cole, John D.; Xu, Xuan; Johnson, Bruce B..
Factors influencing choice of share or cash rental leases for cropland are examined using a 1996 dataset containing 1071 lease contracts in Nebraska and in South Dakota. Logistic regression results indicate tenant's age, capital position, and relationship with landlord were more important than leased land use or crop management variables.
