Is the distribution of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus ecotypes in the Mediterranean Sea affected by global warming? ArchiMer
Mella-flores, D.; Mazard, S.; Humily, F.; Partensky, F.; Mahe, F.; Bariat, L.; Courties, C.; Marie, D.; Ras, J.; Mauriac, R.; Jeanthon, C.; Bendif, El Mahdi; Ostrowski, M.; Scanlan, D. J.; Garczarek, L..
Biological communities populating the Mediterranean Sea, which is situated at the northern boundary of the subtropics, are often claimed to be particularly affected by global warming. This is indicated, for instance, by the introduction of (sub) tropical species of fish or invertebrates that can displace local species. This raises the question of whether microbial communities are similarly affected, especially in the Levantine basin where sea surface temperatures have significantly risen over the last 25 years (0.50 +/- 0.11 degrees C in average per decade, P < 0.01). In this paper, the genetic diversity of the two most abundant members of the phytoplankton community, the picocyanobacteria Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, was examined during two...

Diversity of cultivated and metabolically active aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria along an oligotrophic gradient in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Jeanthon, C.; Boeuf, D.; Dahan, O.; Le Gall, F.; Garczarek, L.; Bendif, El Mahdi; Lehours, A. -c..
Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria play significant roles in the bacterioplankton productivity and biogeochemical cycles of the surface ocean. In this study, we applied both cultivation and mRNA-based molecular methods to explore the diversity of AAP bacteria along an oligotrophic gradient in the Mediterranean Sea in early summer 2008. Colony-forming units obtained on three different agar media were screened for the production of bacteriochlorophyll-a ( BChl-a), the light-harvesting pigment of AAP bacteria. BChl-a-containing colonies represented a low part of the cultivable fraction. In total, 54 AAP strains were isolated and the phylogenetic analyses based on their 16S rRNA and pufM genes showed that they were all affiliated to the...

Effet de la qualité de l'eau sur la croissance larvaire de Pecten maximus en écloserie : observations préliminaires ArchiMer
Samain, Jean-francois; Cochard, Jean-claude; Chevolot, Lionel; Daniel, Jean-yves; Jeanthon, C.; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y.; Moal, Jeanne; Prieur, D.; Salaun, Michele.
Some positive growth differences can be observed, all year long, in Pecten maximus larvae cultivated in an old fishpond, compared with the water which flows into it periodically. These waters are filtered at 1 µm through CUNO cartridges. Moreover, the larvae are cultivated in the same light, temperature and food (cultured phytoplankton) conditions. This difference is significant in terms of larvae size, dry weight, organic matter, ashes, total proteins, glycogen, and lipids. A series of preliminary observations on the chemical composition of these two waters after filtration (amino acids, fatty acids, organic mater, nutritive salts), on the bacterial flora (total, heterotrophic organisms, vibrio), on the particular material using electron microscopy, on...

Ecology of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria along an oligotrophic gradient in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lamy, D.; Jeanthon, C.; Cottrell, M. T.; Kirchman, D. L.; Van Wambeke, France; Ras, J.; Dahan, O.; Pujo-pay, M.; Oriol, L.; Bariat, L.; Catala, P.; Cornet-barthaux, V.; Lebaron, P..
Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria are photoheterotrophic prokaryotes able to use both light and organic substrates for energy production. They are widely distributed in coastal and oceanic environments and may contribute significantly to the carbon cycle in the upper ocean. To better understand questions regarding links between the ecology of these photoheterotrophic bacteria and the trophic status of water masses, we examined their horizontal and vertical distribution and the effects of nutrient additions on their growth along an oligotrophic gradient in the Mediterranean Sea. Concentrations of bacteriochlorophyll-a (BChl-a) and AAP bacterial abundance decreased from the western to the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea and were linked...
