Choise of species and varieties for grain legumesand cereals for inter- and monocropping in organic agricultural systems Organic Eprints
Joernsgaard, B.; Raza, S.; Jensen, E.S.; Christiansen, J.L..
Short stem peas and early ripening narrow leaved lupins with restricted branched are the best option for inter-cropping with spring barley and - wheat, with respect to synchronized development and stand ability. Traditional branched lupins and faba beans outgrew and ripened much later than the inter-cropped cereals. Weed infestations decreased slightly in the mixtures with barley compared to the cereal mono-culture and several times compared to the legume mono-cultures.

Production of biomass and bioenergy in organic agriculture and its consequences for soil quality, environment, biodiversity and socio-economy Organic Eprints
Johansen, A.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Ambus, P.; Dalgaard, T.; Jørgensen, U.; Nielsen, A.M.; Nielsen, L.H.; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A.; Skytte, K.; Smith, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Carter, M.S.; Jensen, E.S..
Production of bioenergy in organic agriculture may be implemented in the future to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore it is important to assess the potential effect this may have on soil quality and biological parameters. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil bio-geo-chemical cycling of plant nutrients and biodiversity of the soil microbiota.

Grain legumes and nitrate leaching: significance and prevention Organic Eprints
Jensen, E.S.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Aveline, A.; Crozat, Y..
The amount of internationally published evidence on the effects of grain legumes on nitrate leaching is sparse and some studies may have weak points. Nevertheless, this mini-review indicates that the level of N leaching is 0–20 kg N ha-1 greater after pea than after cereals. Methods to prevent N leaching should be further developed and there is a need to genetically improve the root systems of grain legumes.

Root size fractions of ryegrass and white clover contributes differently to C and N inclusion in SOM Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, J.; Eriksen, J.; Jensen, E.S.; Høgh-Jensen, H..
Grass-clover mixtures are essential in many low-N-input cropping systems, but the importance of various root fractions for the below-ground N dynamics are not well understood. This may be due to the difficulties of studying root longevity and turnover in situ in mixtures. The present field study, investigated (1) the development in root biomass over two growing seasons and (2) the turnover of dual N-15- and C-14-labelled ryegrass and white clover root material. Litter bags containing various dual-labelled plant materials were incubated in cylinders inserted in the topsoil of a young ryegrass-clover ley. Disappearance of C-14 and N-15 from the litter bag material were studied for 1 year following incubation. Four times during two growing seasons, roots were...

Modelling dry matter production and resource use in intercrops of pea and barley Organic Eprints
Berntsen, J.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Olesen, J.E.; Petersen, B.M.; Jensen, E.S.; Thomsen, A..
The FASSET whole farm model was extended with a sub-model for competition between several plant species for light, water and nitrogen. The new model was tested on intercrops of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). A three-year dataset on pea and barley sole crop growth was used for calibration. Two datasets that included detailed measurements of crop production, nitrogen uptake and leaf area indices from two sites were used for testing. An arable organic experiment from three sites including several treatments over four years was also used for testing. The model predicted the increase in resource utilisation of pea and barley and effects on pea symbiotic nitrogen fixation satisfactorily. The effects of pea interspecific...

Strategic management of nitrogen within an organic cropping system using digestate from biogas production of recirculated crop residues Organic Eprints
Råberg, T.; Kreuger, E.; Björnsson, L.; Jensen, E.S..
This project investigates strategic management of nitrogen by integrating crop residue management with biogas production. The approach offers potential for diversified farmer income, as food crops, feedstock for biogas and digestate for nutrient cycling are produced simultaneously. This type of diversification provides multifunctional solutions in organic farming, especially in production without access to animal manure. Biogas production from crop residues offers the possibility of reducing both emissions and leaching of nutrients to the surrounding ecosystems, as compared to the case where crop residue is incorporated into the soil for decomposition (Baggs et al. 2000; Velthof et al. 2002). This type of multifunctional cropping system provides solutions...

Fate of 15N- and 14C from labelled plant material: Recovery in perennial ryegrass-clover mixtures and in pore water of the sward Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, J.; Gjettermann, B.; Eriksen, J.; Jensen, E.S.; Høgh-Jensen, H..
The below ground C and N dynamics leading to organic and inorganic N leaching from perennial ryegrass-clover mixtures are not well understood. Based on the hypothesis that four different plant materials would degrade differently, a 16 months field experiment was conducted to determine (i) the source strength of labelled plant residues in dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON) in pore water from the plough layer, and (ii) the plant uptake of organically bound N. Litterbags containing 14C- and 15N-labelled ryegrass or clover roots or leaves were inserted into the sward of a ryegrass-clover mixture in early spring. The fate of the released 14C and 15N was monitored in harvested biomass, roots, soil, and pore water percolating from the...

The research programme called “international research cooperation and organic integrity” was commenced for a period 2006-2010. It is coordinated by DARCOF (The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming). The whole programme, with acronym DARCOF III, consists of 15 projects (http://www.darcof.dk/research/darcofiii/index.html). One of them is BIOCONCENS - Biomass and bioenergy production in organic farming – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy (http://www.bioconcens.elr.dk/uk/). The production of bioenergy in organic agriculture (OA) can reduce its dependency of fossil fuels and decrease green house gasses emission; consequently it will increase sustainability of organic farms. Biorefinery concept based...

Biomass and bioenergy production in organic agriculture. Consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy. BioConcnes, a 4-year interdisciplinary project. Organic Eprints
Hauggaard-Nielsen, H; Ambus, P; Dalgaard, T; Johansen, A; Jørgensen, U; Nielsen, A.M.; Nielsen, L.H.; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A; Skytte, K; Smith, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Thomsen, M.H.; Jensen, E.S..
Energy production and energy use in organic agriculture (OA) need to be addressed in order to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, there is an obligation to find consensus between the apparent opposing aims of renewable (bio) energy production and soil fertility in OA. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil fertility.
