The present paper deals with a collection brought together by J. G. Kooiman in 1946. After the defeat of Japan, some Dutch biologists, who during the war had worked as prisoners of war on the notorious Burma railroad, biologically explored the Khwae Noi valley. Kooiman joined this party as an ornithologist. The collection might have been larger, but shooting was limited by the exceedingly high prices of cartridges at that time. The lack of field glasses also was an inconvenience. The collection is of interest as it is the first from this part of Siam. Afterwards the collection was sent to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, where it was worked out by Junge, who is responsible for the taxonomical part of the paper. Kooiman added the field notes.... |

This paper deals with a collection of birds from Trinidad and Tobago brought together by the junior author during a stay on these islands from the end of June 1953 till February 1954. The collection contains 835 specimens belonging to 178 species. About one hundred skins have been collected on Tobago. The collection mainly consists of the smaller species, which is due to the fact that at the time Mees was not in the possession of an adequate shooting gun for the larger species. Though much collecting work has already been done on Trinidad the collection contains one new subspecies, Pipra erythrocephala flavissima, jointly described, while it was shown that Tanagra violacea rodwayi is a tenable race. Moreover the Trinidad list is augmented by the following... |

Some time ago Mr. J. van Rijn van Alkemade, the Hague, presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie a most remarkable double tusk of a Sumatran elephant. Mr. Van Rijn van Alkemade could provide us with the following particulars about the specimen. It was shot in the residency of Palembang before 1906 and the above mentioned double tusk was presented to his father at that time Resident of Palembang. The elephant was a four tusker, the other double tusk, which was of a corresponding shape as the one presented to the Museum, came into the hands of a Chinese dealer. Double tusks in elephants are reported in more than one occasion and it is also a known fact that sometimes twisted tusks in elephants can occur (cf. Colyer: Variations and diseases of the... |

In 1896 Büttikofer (Notes from the Leyden Museum, vol. 18) published upon a collection of birds from Nias, collected there by Kannegieter. In this paper he described a new species, Carpophaga vandepolli (p. 190). This bird is closely allied to Carpophaga consobrina (now called Ducula aenea consobrina Salvad.), but is different "by a large pinkish brown patch on the occiput and the conspicuously wine-red color of the breast". In D. a. consobrina these parts are a splendid grey colour, sometimes more or less washed with a vinaceous tinge. In discussing this new species Büttikofer said: "It is not without hesitation that I describe this bird as new, the idea being rather perplexing that two so closely allied species should inhabit so small an island as Nias".... |

In recent literature two subspecies of Mustela nudipes, viz., Mustela nudipes nudipes Desm. and Mustela nudipes leucocephalus (Gray), are recognized. In a survey of the Indo-Australian weasels, Dammerman (1940, p. 269) discussed the possibility of recognizing these two subspecies, but through lack of material he could not arrive at a definite conclusion. Since Dammerman's notes were published three more specimens were brought to light in the collections of our Museum. Moreover we had at our disposal two specimens from the collection of Mr. H. J. V. Sody, as well as four specimens and a skull in the Amsterdam Zoological Museum. A study of the variation of Mustela nudipes led us to reconsider the status of Mustela hamakeri Dammerman (1940, p. 266, pl. XV) as... |

Recently Dr. J. L. Peters drew my attention to the fact that Bonaparte's Piaya circe and Piaya mehleri never were closely examined in the light of modern knowledge. It is, indeed, a good thing to do this, for the names, especially mehleri, have been used for birds from various localities by different authors; this caused a good deal of trouble and confusion in the genus. Thanks to the kindness of Dr. J. L. Peters of the Museum of Comparative Zoölogy, Cambridge, Mass., and Dr. S. C. Simms of Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, I received some specimens of each race to which the names possibly should be applied. Piaya circe Bonaparte In 1850 (p. 110) Bonaparte described Piaya circe with habitat "Columbia". Sclater (1860, p. 285) placed this name in the... |

During my work on Simalur birds (cf. Temminckia, vol. 1, 1936) I compared the specimens of Charadrius peronii from this island with the specimens from Borneo and Semao in our Museum. Though the Simalur birds were darker I did not pay much attention to this fact, as our material from these localities were mounted birds of about a century old and I feared these specimens were so badly faded, that no satisfactory comparison could be made. During his recent stay in the Leiden Museum mr F. N. Chasen noted the same fact and promised to send a good series of fresh skins. I was now able to compare the Simalur specimens with 4 ♂♂, 5 ♀♀ from North Borneo; 2 ♂♂, 1 ♀ from NE Malay Peninsula; 1 ♂ from the Rhio Archipelago; 1 ♀ from Pulau Tioman, S China Sea. It... |

The present paper is the report on a collection of birds brought together during the expedition of the "Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap" to the Wissel Lake area in 1939. The zoologist of this expedition Prof. Dr. H. Boschma collected with the assistance of two mantris of the Buitenzorg Museum in this district from mid-August till mid-November, whilst also some collecting work was done at the Etna Bay. Of great importance was the help of the natives, who brought many birds that otherwise would have been difficult to obtain. Included in this report is a small collection made by Mr. J. P. K. van Eechoud in the same district in 1938. For permission to include it here I am indebted to the authorities of the Buitenzorg Museum. Though birds... |

During the war I was able to identify some collections of birds from Sumatra, present in the Leiden Museum. These collections were brought together by E. Jacobson and W. C. van Heurn in the Padang Highlands in 1013; by W. Groeneveldt in the same area in 1914 and 1915; bij L. P. Cosquino de Bussy and by Dr. F. C. van Heurn in Deli in 1912-1913 and 1918-1919 respectively; by C. J. Batenburg in the Palembang residency between 1918 and 1920 (many skins without exact locality) and by H. R. Rookmakers in Acheen in 1930. This paper contains remarks on those specimens, which are of more special interest. For the loan of material or for most useful information I am much indebted to Dr. H. G. Deignan (Washington), A. Hoogerwerf (Buitenzorg), J. G. van Marle... |

Till now it was assumed that the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Celebes are inhabited by the typical race of Chalcites malayanus. At Prof. Stresemann's request I compared the beautiful series collected by Heinrich in Celebes with the material in the Leiden Museum and it proved that the above mentioned region is inhabited by more than one race. Especially in series these races are well recognizable. Material was kindly sent me on loan by the British Museum, the Buitenzorg Museum, and the Raffles Museum. Chalcites malayanus malayanus (Raffles) Cuculus malayanus Raffles, Trans. Linn. Soc, vol. 13, 1821, p. 286 (Malay Peninsula). The upperparts are greenish tinged, in some specimens with a more or less bronze gloss. The forehead with a varying... |

Mr. C. Hoogerheide, who was stationed at the Netherlands Naval Air Base at Biak Island between July 1953 and December 1954, brought together a small collection of birds, which was sent to the Leiden Museum. It is worth while to put on record those species, which have not been collected before on this island and to give remarks on a few other species. An excellent review of the avifauna of Biak Island is given by Mayr and De Schauensee (1939). Fregata ariel ariel (Gray) A ♂ imm. and a ♀ imm. have been collected by Mr. F. Heuberger at sea near the south coast of Soepiori between Korrido and the kampong Soëk on July 26, 1952. Through the intermediary of Dr. L. D. Brongersma the specimens were presented to the Leiden Museum. Near this island the species has... |

A Fin Whale was cast ashore on the coast of Pulu Sugi, one of the smaller islands of the Rhio Archipelago between Singapore and the Sumatran coast in July 1936. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. K. W. Dammerman, former Director of 's Lands Plantentuin at Buitenzorg, and the unvaluable help of the late Mr. F. N. Chasen, Director of the Raffles Museum, Singapore, the specimen was saved and after cleaning sent to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. It was received in June 1939. The length of the skeleton was slightly over 12 m and it must have belonged to an adult specimen, for in all vertebrae the epiphyses are coalesced completely with the rest of the vertebral body (Wheeler, 1930). It was clear that the specimen belonged to a Balaenoptera. It... |

A full report on the birds collected during the expedition of the "Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap,, to the Wissel Lake district in 1939 will appear in "Nova Guinea". Publication of this report is delayed, however, and therefore short descriptions of the new subspecies, which were found during the work on this collection, are given here. Rallus pectoralis connectens nov. subspec. In the colour of the upper parts connectens agrees with alberti from SE New Guinea, it differs, however, by the paler breast and less blackish abdomen and in the larger size, especially of the bill. The difference with mayri from the Arfak Mountains is, that the upper parts in connectens are more overflown with reddish brown and that, on an average, the latter... |

During the Scientific Surinam Expedition 1948-1949 Mr. P. H. Creutzberg collected only a few specimens of birds, which came in the Leiden Museum. Most of the collected birds belong to species well known from Surinam as Butorides striatus, Piaya cayana, Rhynchocyclus flaviventris. Others like Leucopternis albicollis are not exceptionally rare. One species, however, proved to be new for Surinam. It is of interest to mention it here together with some other species, rarely recorded from Surinam, collected by Mr. W. C. van Heurn in 1911 and by Mr. H. A. Boon in 1901. Leucopternis melanops Lath. A specimen (♀) of the Black-Faced Hawk was collected by Mr. W. C. van Heurn at Guyana Goudplacer on October 9, 1911. Guyana Goudplacer is situated on the railroad about... |
