Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. As a result of colonization of biopores by earthworms, pore walls are enriched with nutrients. In this study, a first attempt was made to assess the influence of earthworm abundance on both structural pore wall characteristics as assessed with in situ endoscopy and on pore wall C and N contents. Higher earthworm density resulted in higher N contents and significantly higher C contents in biopore walls as compared to the surrounding bulk soil, regardless whether they showed visible earthworm coatings. In the treatment with lower... |

In many countries, cotton is traditionally intercropped with other plants in order to increase yields and to control pests. We tested the effects of intercropping cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) during one field season on pest infestation, yields, and economical parameters in the Governorate of Fayoum, Egypt. Basil, which is known for its repellent effect on various insect pests, was mixed with cotton in three different intercropping rates (no, medium and high basil area fraction) and two row distances (60 and 90 cm) using a substitutive design with four replicates. Compared with the non-intercropped plots, cotton-basil intercropping significantly reduced total pest infestation and led to a 50% reduced abundance of the pink... |

Agriculture is considered to be one of the main drivers for worldwide biodiversity loss but the impacts of agricultural production on biodiversity have not been extensively considered in Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). Recent realisation that biodiversity impact should be included in comprehensive LCAs has led to attempts to develop and implement methods for biodiversity impact assessment. In this review, twenty-two different biodiversity impact assessment methods have been analysed to identify their strengths and weaknesses in terms of their comprehensiveness in the evaluation of agricultural products. Different criteria, which had to meet the specific requirements of biodiversity research, life cycle assessment methodology, and the evaluation of... |

Field trials on weed control in direct seeding with the use of natural phytotoxic ingredients (NPI) were carried out from 2011 to 2013 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Paraná state, Brazil (IAPAR). Soybean was direct seeded into residues of precrop black oats (\textit{Avena strigosa)}. In a split-plot trial the whole-plot treatment consisted of two different weed densities. In the eight subplot treatments the effects of "natural phytotoxic ingredients" (NPI) on weed control was evaluated. The two NPI formulations used in the experiment contained 50 L/ha Pine Oil (formulation ``Pine Oil'') or 50 L/ha d-Limonene (formulation ``Limonene''), both combined with 50 kg/ha NaCl. These formulations were applied once, twice, or three times in a weekly... |

By combined application of the three picture forming methods biocrystallization ac-cording to Pfeiffer, capillary dynamolisis according to Wala and circular chromatogra-phy according to Pfeiffer encoded food samples from different production systems have been repeatedly differentiated and identified by Dr. Ursula Graf. In the present study we tested whether by using the combined three picture forming methods en-coded food samples from different production systems could also be differentiated and identified in a different laboratory by another trained person. Ten encoded wheat samples each from 2000 and 2005 harvests were taken from the long-term DOK- trial in Oberwil/Switzerland and examined with the pictomorphological methods. The wheat samples derived... |

Organic farms are characterized as low external input agro-ecosystems. Currently, some organic dairy farmers feed higher amounts of concentrates and succulent feed, some of which is purchased, to increase the dairy performance of their cows. To assess the environ¬mental impact of this practice, nutrient balances at the farm-gate level of 26 organic dairy farms located in two different regions in Germany were compiled and analysed. The farms are characterised by different production features and feeding intensity levels (0 - 2.72 t DM of concentrates per cow and year, which was 0 - 378 g kg-1 milk) yielding 5,150 - 8,790 kg milk on average per cow and year. The area- and product- (milk) related farm-gate nutrient budgets for P and K are almost balanced... |

In a field trial established in 1994 by the foundation „Stiftung Ökologie und Landbau“, different primary tillage systems are being tested on their influence on root and shootgrowth of cereals. The tillage implements are : mouldboard plough, two layer plough and layer cultivator. Investigations oriented on soil physical parameters ( e.g. aggregate stability ), root parameters ( e.g. root-length-density ), shoot growth ( e.g. dry matter, yields) and laboratory analysis ( e.g., P, K Ct/Nt contents ). These parameters were also tested for the weeds, that can strongly compete with the crops, especially in reduced tillage systems. The results of the investigations combined with knowledge obtained from previous work and literature are being interpreted in order... |

The global loss of biodiversity is one of the major environmental threats of our time (Rockstrom et al., 2009) and agriculture is one of the main drivers of the global biodiversity decline (Benton, 2007; Kleijn et al., 2009; Pereira et al., 2010). Agricultural landscapes were formerly rich in biodiversity, which has been attributed to mosaic style landscapes and low-intensity production systems that provided a wide variety of interlinked habitats (Edwards et al., 1999). Economic pressure has led to declining species richness as agricultural production has become more intensive (Robinson and Sutherland, 2002), with an associated reduction of habitat-providing landscape elements (Billeter et al., 2008). Despite the objective of promoting biodiversity, which... |

Large sized, vertical biopores can provide preferential pathways for root growth, hence facilitating the exploration of great soil depths by crop roots. This is of particular importance for organic production systems, where crops are more dependent on nutrient acquisition from the solid soil phase than under conditions of mainstream agriculture. The relevance of biopores for nutrient acquisition from the subsoil can possibly depend on their individual properties. The aim of this study was to test how different chemical pore wall properties affect the growth of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots in large sized biopores. Bulk soil, pore wall material and roots from individual biopores were collected from three depth layers in 45-75 cm soil depth. C and N... |

Abstract – The effect of different fertiliser types (cal-cium ammonium nitrate, fresh farmyard manure, composted farmyard manure and nettle extract) on the hygienic quality of fresh and washed lettuce was tested in two trials in summer 2004 and 2005. The hygienic quality was described by total aerobic bacte-rial count and level of coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Enterobacteriaceae. No Salmonella Enteritidis was detected in any sample. E. coli was isolated independent of the fertiliser type in low concentrations. The total aerobic bacterial count, the levels of Enterobacteriaceae and coliform bacteria tended to be lower after application of mineral fertil-iser but on a very low level. The washing process had no significant... |

In organic agriculture, the internal farm nutrient cycle must be quantified to ensure high system productivity along with environmentally sound production processes. In contrast to common farmgate and field balances, budgeting at the stable level is seldom undertaken. When budgeting mixed farming systems, a substantial lack of nutrients can be detected in the nutrient flow chain "forage and straw input - stable - manure output". Therefore, stable balances focus on a central component of whole farm nutrient budgets for developing efficient nutrient management strategies. At the experimental farm for organic agriculture Wiesengut in Hennef, Germany, all solid mass flows for a suckler herd and a herd of beef bulls were measured. Relative balance values... |
