| A 49-month-old Holstein cow with anorexia, tachypnea, enlarged peripheral lymph nodes, and difficulty standing up was suspected of bovine leukosis. Hematological examination revealed lymphocytosis with the presence of neoplastic cells. Increased total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, isozymes of LDH-2 and LDH-3 activities and thymidine kinase activity were observed. Cytological findings of fine needle aspiration of subiliac lymph nodes indicated lymphosarcoma. Histopathology and antibody analysis confirmed the diagnosis of enzootic bovine leukosis, a B-cell bovine lymphoma caused by bovine leukemia virus. | 脊髄造影後の後遺障害発生のメカニズムについて、脊髄終末が犬より尾側に位置するウサギを用いて、行動観察、神経学的および病理組織学的に検討した。実験にはウサギ（n=12）を使用し、実験群は、(1)脊髄穿刺群、(2)生理的食塩水注入群、(3)等浸透圧ヨード造影剤イオジキサノール注入群、(4)低浸透圧ヨード造影剤イオヘキソール注入群とした。全身麻酔下で第5-6腰椎間より脊髄穿刺あるいは薬液を脊髄実質内に直接注入し、処置48時間後に行動観察および神経学的検査を、72時間後に病理組織学的検査を行うとともに、切片上での損傷面積率について評価した。神経学的検査では生理的食塩水注入群、イオジキサノール注入群およびイオヘキソール注入群で異常が認められた。また、穿刺部位の脊髄損傷面積率についても脊髄穿刺群と生理的食塩水注入群との間に明らかな差異が認められた。本研究の結果から、脊髄への薬液注入による組織の圧迫は、脊髄造影後の後遺障害を発生させる要因と考えられた。今後、脊髄造影を行う際には、脊髄針からの脳脊髄液の逆流を必ず確認し、造影剤の実質内注入を疑った場合には直ちに検査を中止することを提案する。なお、将来は獣医臨床における、より安全な脊髄造影手技の開発が望まれる。 The purpose of this experiment is to characterize the aftereffects of myelography of canine spinal cords using rabbits，since the distal end of the spinal cord of rabbits is more caudal than that of dogs. | 5歳6カ月齢のホルスタイン種乳牛が鼻出血，眼球突出および黒色便を呈したため，地方病性牛白血病を疑った．し かし，生前の臨床検査では牛白血病の確定診断はできず，病理組織学的検査により鼻腔内骨肉腫と診断された．本症例では，明瞭な呼吸器症状や顔面の変形といった鼻腔内腫瘍を疑わせる所見が乏しく，生前診断が困難であった． Enzootic bovine leukosis was suspected in a Holstein cow aged 5-years and 6-months, as it displayed symptoms of epistaxis, proptosis, and melena. However, clinicopathological findings failed to confirm a diagnosis of bovine leukosis, and histopathological findings revealed a nasal osteosarcoma. | An 8-month-old Holstein heifer with cervical enlargement was suspected of thymic lymphosarcoma given clinical signs of depression, tendency to lie down, cervical mass, jugular vein distension, conjunctival hyperemia, and ruminal tympany. Unilateral Horner’s syndrome was also observed. Increased serum total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), LDH isozyme (LDH-2, and LDH-3) and serum thymidine kinase activity were observed. | Expression of six selective genes in peripheral blood cells was evaluated as diagnostic biomarkers for enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) by using 10 EBL and 15 clinically healthy cattle. The clinically healthy cattle generally showed lower gene expression levels. Although wide variations of gene expression were found in some clinical cases of EBL, 4 and 5 among 10 EBL cattle showed higher expression of interleukin 2 receptor gene (IL2R) and Wilms’ tumor gene (WT1), respectively. Expression of IL2R in peripheral blood cells in EBL cattle was statistically increased; however, the lower sensitivity and higher variation in the gene expressions among clinical cases of EBL would be problems as diagnostic biomarkers. |

| チミジンキナーゼはDNA合成に関わる酵素の一つであり，近年牛白血病の発症マーカーとして利用できることが報 告されている.今回，牛白血病ウイルス汚染農場において，本酵素の活性を測定することにより，牛白血病罹患牛の早期摘発を試みた.その結果，臨床症状は示さなかったものの，地方病性牛白血病に罹患していた10歳9カ月齢のホルスタイン種雌牛を摘発できた.牛白血病ウイルス汚染牛群における本酵素活性の測定が，地方病性牛白血病罹患牛の早期摘発に臨床上有用であることが本研究により示唆された. | A 17-year-old, gray Thoroughbred gelding was presented with recurrent epistaxis following exercise for over one year. Multidetector-row computed tomographic (MDCT) examination of the head performed under general anesthesia indicated the presence of malignant melanoma. MDCT examination revealed the exact location and size of masses in the right guttural pouch first identified by endoscopy and in the left guttural pouch unidentified by endoscopy. | 8カ月齢ホルスタイン種乳牛が起立不能を呈した.右下顎リンパ節相当部に腫瘤を認めたため，午白血病を疑い血液検査および針吸引細胞診を実施したが，確定診断に至らなかった.病理解剖においては，環椎および胸椎にも腫瘤が存在し脊髄を圧迫していた.病理組織学的に，腫瘍細胞はBLA-36抗原陽性であり，B細胞性リンパ腫と診断した. | Degeneration of the optic pathway has been reported in various animal species including cattle. We experienced a case of bilateral optic tract degeneration characterized by severe gliosis in a Japanese black cattle without any obvious visual defects. To evaluate the significance, pathological nature and pathogenesis of the lesions, we examined the optic pathway in 60 cattle (41 Japanese black, 13 Holstein and 6 crossbreed) with or without ocular abnormalities. | Autumn crocus poisoning of cattle is characterized by severe diarrhea caused by alkaloid colchicine. Previously, we examined pathologically this poisoning in cattle and reported that enterotoxic lesions were closely associated with apoptosis. To examine enterotoxicity of autumn crocus more precisely, a reproductive study was performed using guinea pigs and mice, and pathological findings associated with autumn crocus poisoning were compared with those of colchicine. Each group of guinea pigs given the bulb of autumn crocus or colchicine exhibited severe diarrhea. | A 12-month-old Holstein heifer with anorexia, lameness, and enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes was suspected of having bovine leukosis. Although lymphocytosis was not observed, cytology of fine needle aspirate from a superficial cervical node, and increased serum lactate dehydrogenase and thymidine kinase activities, strongly suggested lymphosarcoma. Increased numbers of mononuclear cells as well as mitotic cells were observed in synovial fluid collected from swollen joints. | 病理学的に血様液貯留を特徴とする特発性心嚢水腫と診断された乳牛8症例（血様心嚢水貯留群）の臨床病理学的検査所見を回顧的に取りまとめ，心膜炎7症例（心膜炎群）の所見と比較した．血様心嚢水貯留群では冷性浮腫を呈する症例が心膜炎群に比べて多かったが，その他の臨床症状には両群で差がなかった．心エコー検査では血様心嚢水貯留群では，心膜炎でみられる心嚢内の顕著なフィブリン析出はなかった．血液及び生化学検査では，血様心嚢水貯留群では炎症像が弱く，心膜炎群と比較して白血球数，分葉核好中球割合，A/G比，アルブミン濃度，γグロブリン割合に有意差がみられた．両群でALP及びGGTの高値がみられたが，特に血様心嚢水貯留群のGGT増加は顕著であった．血様心嚢水貯留症例の診断は臨床症状だけでは困難であるが，心エコー検査所見，弱い炎症像，ALP及びGGTの高値などが心膜炎との鑑別診断に有用と考えられた． Clinicopathological findings of eight cases of idiopathic hydropericardium characterized by bloodhlike fluid (HBFhgroup) that were confirmed by necropsy were retrospectively summarized and compared with those of seven cows with pericarditis. | Humeral chondrosarcoma was found in an 18-year-old male Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis). Necropsy revealed a large firm mass under the left superficial pectoral muscle at the axillary region. The mass involved the left shoulder joint and peripheral muscles, and connected to the head of the humerus with osteolysis. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of irregularly shaped myxomatous to cartilaginous tumor lobules. The tumor cell showed moderate nuclear atypia with a relatively high mitotic index, especially in the edges of the myxomatous lobules. | A 10-day-old, Japanese Black, female calf had shown astasia since just after birth. Focal symmetrical periventricular malacic lesions of the cerebrum and suppurative arthritis of the left hip joint were observed in macroscopic examination. Histologically, the cerebral lesions were confirmed as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). The location and histological features of the lesions were similar to PVL in humans, caused by neonatal ischemia/hypovolemia. This is the first report of PVL in a neonatal calf. |
