SUPPLY RESPONSIVENESS OF RICE FARMERS IN LAGUNA, PHILIPPINES AgEcon
Flinn, John C.; Kalirajan, Kaliappa P.; Castillo, Linda L..
The supply response and input demand by farmers using modern rice technology in Laguna, Philippines were estimated using profit function analysis. The results indicate that farmers do maximise short-term profits and respond to price changes efficiently. The supply elasticity of rice with respect to its own price was approximately unity. Changes in real wages were estimated to have a greater impact on rice profit and supplies than changes in the real prices of mechanised land preparation, fertiliser or pesticides. Production elasticities derived from the profit function were consistent with those estimated directly from the underlying production function.

Monetary Policy in India: Objectives, Reaction Function and Policy Effectiveness AgEcon
Singh, Kanhaiya; Kalirajan, Kaliappa P..
In the first part of this paper, the policy reaction functions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have been modeled to see how policy stance decisions respond to the changes in the goal variables. In the second part, the transmission effects of RBI’s policy stances on the goal variables have been analyzed using the Granger causality test, and analysis of simple estimated models of relevant variables. It may be suggested from the results that the RBI should not be working simultaneously with instruments of quantity and price control and should shelve the cash reserve ratio (CRR) and concentrate more on price variables for conducting monetary policy.

Input and Quality Controls: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Bangladesh’s Industrial Trawl Fishery AgEcon
Chowdhury, Nanzeen Kawshar; Kompas, Tom; Kalirajan, Kaliappa P..
This paper examines the effectiveness of different management tools, particularly input and quality controls on Bangladesh’s industrial trawl fishery. Results show that the efficiency of industrial trawl fishery comes from multiple owner managed vessels, export oriented vessels and registered vessels that are mainly engaged in double rigger trawling. Results also indicate that freezer vessels with small storage capacity, using small gear are relatively less efficient. This study shows that there is no depletion or reduction in marine fish stock over the period and shrimp vessels are technically more efficient than fish vessels.
