Introduction to the Jubille Volume Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Our 150th anniversary is commemorated in a rather modest way and it is not our intention to make it an important international event. Hoewever, we decided to dedicate part of Blumea to the jubilee, not only in order to bring our anniversary to the attention of our colleagues abroad, but also in order to bring the historiography of our institute more or less up to date. The last time the history of the Rijksherbarium was written, was on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its residence in Leiden. The conservator W. A. Goddijn then published a rather lengthy paper in Dutch and a short summary in French, in the Mededeelingen van’s Rijks Herbarium, nr. 62a/b, 1931. Since that time there have been spectacular changes in the work and position of the...

Kalkman, C..
In the first sentence of the Preface the elusive concept of ethnobotany is defined in a rather restricted way: “the study of the use of plants by indigenous people”, ‘indigenous’ obviously meaning non-Western and not technologically advanced. Most of the chapters in this book (or rather: the papers brought together in this Symposium volume) agree with the definition given: Banack on plants used in making boats and during voyages; Kirch on agricultural systems; Abbot on uses of seaweeds; Cox on medicinal plants; Lebot on the use of Piper methysticum; Ragone on Artocarpus altilis. These chapters contain interesting stuff, as well from the anthropological as from the botanical point of view. Most of them are also well-written. I found especially the chapter...

In Memoriam Dr. M. Jacobs Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Dr. Marius Jacobs, a senior staff member of the Rijksherbarium, died suddenly on 28 April 1983, following a heart attack some days earlier. He was only 53 years old and his death came as a great shock, not only to his colleagues at our institute. Jacobs was a many-sided man with interests in many fields. In each of these he held definite opinions which were based on a thorough knowledge of the subject. So he could not easily be shaken from his views when it came to a discussion.

Editorial Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
It is with the utmost regret that we announce the sudden and quite unexpected death of Dr. Marius Jacobs, editor of this Bulletin. See the obituary on page 3869. He was co-editor of the Flora Malesiana Bulletin for nr. 17 (1962) to nr. 22 (1968) and took full responsibility onwards of nr. 27 (1974). He showed great ability in enlarging its scope and we have many letters in our archives expressing appreciation and admiration for the lively and informative style in which he edited the Bulletin. I had to take over the editorial work for this number at short notice, but I was greatly helped by a number of Rijksherbarium colleagues, which help is gratefully acknowledged. In this way the delay has been kept to a minimum. It is, however, possible that some news...

In Memoriam Dr. J. Muller Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
At the age of 61, Jan Muller died on 5 October 1983, after a very short illness which only some weeks earlier had been detected. His rapid decline but also his courage during the last few weeks, have made a deep impression on all who have witnessed them. Jan Muller was born on 15 October 1921 at Rotterdam. His secondary training was with a College of Tropical Agriculture at Deventer, the Netherlands, but the outbreak of World War II prevented his departure for the tropics. Instead he entered in 1941 the service of the botanical department of the Research Division that was responsible for scientific research in the reclaimed Zuiderzee polders. He took part in the botanical and stratigraphical analysis of peat deposits in the Noordoostpolder, under...

The Malesian species of the subfamily Maloideae (Rosaceae) Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Taxonomic revision, precursory to the treatment of the Rosaceae in Flora Malesiana. Generic limits in tribus Sorbeae are discussed, Stranvaesia is included in Photinia (5 spp. in Malesia), Micromeles (1 sp. in Malesia) is treated as generically different from Sorbus. Apart from these, there are in Malesia representatives of Eriobotrya and Rhaphiolepis (both 1 sp.), and some more species are cultivated and occasionally naturalized. No new species are described. New combinations: Photinia serratifolia (basionym Crataegus serratifolia Desf., replacing illegitimate Photinia serrulata Lindl.), Photinia nussia (basionym Pyrus nussia D. Don, transferred from Stranvaesia), Rhaphiolepis philippinensis (basionym Eriobotrya philippinensis Vidal), Micromeles...

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
The first, long-awaited volume of a series that may become as important in our times as Engler & Prantl’s Pflanzenfamilien have been, if it can be finished within a reasonable time. Authors and especially editors must be congratulated. The authorship of this volume is shared by 29 collaborators: K.U. Kramer and 20 others produced the Pteridophyte families, C.N. Page the Conifers, L.A.S. Johnson & K.L. Wilson the Cycads, and K. Kubitzki the Gnetales. Chapters on Chemosystematics and on Conservation show another 4 authors.

In Memoriam Dr. S.J. van Ooststroom Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
On 28 September 1982 Dr. S.J. van Ooststroom died at the age of 76. He retired in 1971 from his office as senior botanist at the Rijksherbarium, the institute where he worked for 37 years. Simon van Ooststroom’s main botanical interest was the vascular flora of the Netherlands, including the adventitious and more or less naturalized members. The most authoritative flora of our country, known as Heukels—Van Ooststroom, was revised and edited by him for many years. Also in Flora Neerlandica he treated several families, many of them in collaboration with Th.J. Reichgelt. Numerous smaller papers bear witness of his knowledge of the Dutch flora, especially also the adventitious species. This makes it understandable that Dutch botanists, layman or professional,...

“The Wealth of India” is a series continuing the tradition set by Watt’s Dictionary a century ago. It is probably the most complete and most useful treatise on plant products that has ever been written for any major country. Since the first edition (1949-1979) information has increased tremendously and therefore a second revised edition is now being prepared. Letter A was already published in 1985 and the present volume covers letter B: 350 pages of text in two columns on large pages (against 111 in the corresponding part of the original volume 1).

Non-timber forest products receive, to quote the first words of the introduction (Chapter 1) of this book, “wide attention throughout the tropics.” It has repeatedly been said that they could play an important economical and social role in regional development, and it has been implied or stated that developing countries would do wise in furthering such a role and to recognize the sustainable exploitation of non-timber forest products as a preferable alternative for the non-sustainable timber exploitation as practised now in most tropical countries. This is the second publication in the Tropenbos Series on nontimber forest products. It focuses on a part of Borneo and explores the potential value of these products for the area studied. The vegetation of the...

Dioecious, rarely monoecious trees or shrubs. Bark of twigs with a whorl of resiniferous ducts, bordered on the outer side by a distinct, closed or more or less interrupted sinuous sclerenchymatic cylinder. Pith of the twigs, petioles and petiolules not rarely with vascular strands, those in the twigs mostly amphivasal with mainly sclerenchymatic xylem, those in the petioles and petiolules collateral and consisting of abundant phloem, the strands predominantly reduced to mere vestigial resiniferous ducts. Leaves imparipinnate, sometimes 1-foliolate; spirally arranged, very rarely in pseudowhorls, usually more or less crowded at the ends of the branchlets. Stipules absent, Garuga and Canarium excepted (see Morph.); in addition in Garuga stipellas are often...

The near future of Flora Malesiana Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
If we define the near future as the next five years, it can be said that there will be a considerable output of family revisions that can be published. Without undue optimism more than 30 family treatments will have been published before 1996 or their manuscripts will be in the hands of the editors.

In Memoriam professor H. J. Lam Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
At the age of 85, Herman Johannes Lam died at his house on the 15th of February, 1977. From 1933 to 1962 he was director of the Rijksherbarium and although the day of his retirement lies some 15 years behind us now, he is still remembered in our institute for his pleasant personal qualities. The Rijksherbarium as it is today we owe for a large part to his vision and work during the 29 years of his directorate. He broadened the basis of the institute’s research but kept intact its specialization; he succeeded in obtaining valuable collections; he started a programme of botanical expeditions; he provided a home for the Flora Malesiana, to mention some of his accomplishments. When he came to Leiden after a 14 years’ career in the Herbarium at Buitenzorg (now...

Kalkman, C..
The book contains 411 colour photographs of as many plant species (all Angiosperms). I estimate that about half of the species covered is not native to Sri Lanka, but introduced and sometimes run wild. That means that the pictures are highly representative for what one meets as a resident or as a visitor, in gardens, along the roads and in waste places. It also means that the book can be profitable in other tropical Asian countries. The arrangement is alphabetical by scientific names, which is of course very easy for those who know the names. It may be felt as a disadvantage by those who try to attach a name to a plant they have found. They will have to go through the entire book. In books like this the arrangement is often by flower colour which makes...

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C.; Adema, F..
This book intends (according to the preface) to afford at once a review, a general outline of what has been accomplished, and a set of signposts for the future. It attempts to do so in three sections on Origin and Diversification of Primitive Land Plants (4 papers), Origin and Diversification of Angiosperms (6 papers), and Speciation and Mechanisms of Diversification (5 papers). In a sense our discipline is in a state of change that could be called revolutionary, rapidly acquiring new facts. In this situation the need is felt for a survey of what has been accomplished and what the future may bring. This slim volume serves as a prime example of an attempt to do so. It covers phylogenetic fields: early land plants, Pteridophytes, conifer families,...

This project of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh aims to provide regional manuals and on-line identification computer programs to the timber species of Dipterocarpaceae. The Singapore manual is a first trial, later editions should include other islands in the Malay Archipelago. The possibility is also offered to have tailor-made manuals for specific regions against cost price. Many data have been gathered, especially vegetative characters one can readily observe while standing underneath these enormous trees. In this respect the database will be very useful, because due to the very irregular flowering of the Dipterocarpaceae, flowers and fruits are usually unavailable, and even if they are present, they are found high in the tree.

In Memoriam Dr. J. H. Kern Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
On 29 July 1974 dr. J. H. Kern died at the age of 70. At the occasion of his official retirement from the Rijksherbarium staff (January 1969) Van Steenis and Van Ooststroom gave due recognition to his achievements in tropical botany and to his share in the progress of the knowledge of the Dutch flora. There is no need to repeat here what was written at that time (Blumea 17, 1969, 1—3 and Gorteria 4, 1968, 69—72). After his retirement he was appointed honorary collaborator of the Rijksherbarium and at first he continued his work more or less as usual. However, his health soon became worse and his deteriorating eyesight prevented him from working with the microscope. Consequently, he could not finish the revision of Carex and Uncinia for Flora Malesiana, the...

Dr. Bakhuizen van den Brink retires Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
On 11 September 1976 dr. Reinier Cornelis Bakhuizen van den Brink will reach the age of 65 and so he must retire from his position as a senior botanist at the Rijksherbarium. He has worked in our institute since December 1943, after having obtained his doctor’s degree in Utrecht. At the Rijksherbarium he became heavily involved in the preparation of the so-called ‘emergency edition’ of C. A. Backer’s Beknopte Flora van Java, which was mimeographed during the war in order to restrict the chances of destroyal of Backer’s valuable manuscripts. When after the war it was decided to translate Backer’s concise flora into English and to update and complete it, he gradually took over the burden from Backer who in 1945 was already over seventy. As a consequence the...

The first volume on ornamentals contains (1) an original introduction to the plant geography of China, 12 pages and, indeed, not more than a very simplified introduction to the physical, climatological and vegetational diversity of China; (2) a translation of five chapters from E.H. Wilson, A naturalist in Western China (1913), viz. on the flora of western China, on travels in NW Hupei, and on the flora of Ichang, Emei Shan, and Wa Shan (more than 50 pages); (3) a number of ‘plant portraits’, more than 40 paragraphs each covering one species or sometimes a genus, altogether more than 60 pages; (4) a list of the older plant hunters in China (almost all ‘expatriate’, covering on a total of 42 collectors only 3 with Chinese names!), a list of literature...
