Accumulation and translocation of sparingly soluble manure phosphorus in different types of soils after long-term excessive inputs Organic Eprints
Uustitalo, Risto; Ylivainio, Kari; Turtola, Eila; Kangas, Arjo.
When phosphorus (P) is applied to soils in excess of plant P demand, P accumulation takes place. By means of P fractionation, we studied the fate of P in 35 soils that had received long-term surplus P rates as fox and mink manure P (F&MM-P), considered as a sparingly soluble P source. We compared these data with those from the same soils under a more typical P management, i.e., fields amended with soluble P sources superphosphate and dairy manure (SP+DM). Fractionation of manures according to the Hedley procedure suggested limited solubility of F&MM-P, two-thirds of the F&MM-P being soluble in acid (HCl) only. In mineral soils, surplus F&MM-P accumulated for the most part as HCl-P (poorly available), whereas in organic soils accumulation...

Meat bone meal as fertiliser for barley and oat Organic Eprints
Chen, Lin; Kivelä, Jukka; Helenius, Juha; Kangas, Arjo.
The traditional production of mineral N and P fertilisers is unsustainable due its reliance on fossil fuels in the case of N, and on limited mineral resource stocks in the case of P. The use of alternative or complementary fertilisers that originate from organic waste materials is gaining interest. Organic farms, especially arable organic farms without livestock, need usable sources of plant nutrients. Meat bone meal (MBM), a potential organic fertiliser for agricultural crops, contains considerable amounts of nutrients (on average 8% N, 5% P, 1% K and 10% Ca). In EU countries, Commission regulation (EC) No 181/2006 authorised the use of MBM as an organic fertiliser. In this study, MBM was compared to conventional mineral NPK fertiliser. Two randomised...

Recommendable block sizes: a case study on Finnish official variety trials of barley cultivars Organic Eprints
Jauhiainen, Lauri; Öfversten, Jukka; Kangas, Arjo.
Well-established results in the current statistical literature imply that plant breeders should use incomplete block designs wherever spatial variability exists and the number of treatments is large. But the theoretical position does not indicate the recommendable number of cultivars in an incomplete block. In this study we used data from 28 official variety trials conducted in Finland during the period 2001-2005 to study theffect of block size on the efficiency of testing pairwise yield differences of barley cultivars and cultivar rankings. In previous trials some 6-7 cultivars have usually been included in one block. Our results imply that the efficiency of testing procedures could be improved by using a block size as small as 4-5. The results further...

Selenium content of Finnish oats in 1997-1999: effect of cultivars and cultivation techniques Organic Eprints
Eurola, Merja; Hietaniemi, Veli; Kontturi, Markku; Tuuri, Hannu; Kangas, Arjo; Niskanen, Markku; Saastamoinen, Marketta.
Se-supplemented fertilization is the main factor affecting the selenium (Se) contents of cereals in Finland. Soil and climatic conditions determine the activity of selenate added to soils and bioavailability to plants. In the present study the Se contents and its variation in Finnish oats, the differences between oat cultivars and cultivation techniques were examined. The selenium (Se) contents of oats (Avena sativa L.) in Finland were examined during 1997-1999 in 3 types of trial: official variety, organic cultivation variety and organic vs. conventional cultivation trials. Farm samples were also examined. The mean Se contents of oats in official variety trials were 0.110, 0.120 and 0.160 mg kg-1 dry weight (dw) range 0.016-0.460 mg kg-1dw in 1997-1999,...

Contents of trichothecenes in oats during official variety, organic cultivation and nitrogen fertilization trials in Finland Organic Eprints
Hietaniemi, Veli; Kontturi, Markku; Rämö, Sari; Eurola, Merja; Kangas, Arjo; Niskanen, Markku; Saastamoinen, Marketta.
Natural toxins, such as mycotoxins, have emerged as a significant factor affecting the safety image of cereal grains as a raw material for the food and feed industry. The aim of the present study was to investigate the contents of trichothecenes in representative samples of oats during official variety, nitrogen fertilization and organic farming trials in Finland, 1997–1999. Further objectives were to promote industry and commerce by selection of high-quality oat varieties for various applications. The official variety trials conducted at 8–10 locations were managed following standard protocol. There were 2 types of agronomy trial, the first included comparison of oat cultivars grown in conventional and organic farming systems at 6 locations, and the...

ß-Glucan contents of groats of different oat cultivars in official variety, in organic cultivation, and in nitrogen fertilization trials in Finland Organic Eprints
Saastamoinen, Marketta; Hietaniemi, Veli; Pihlava, Juha-Matti; Eurola, Merja; Kontturi, Markku; Tuuri, Hannu; Niskanen, Markku; Kangas, Arjo.
ß-Glucan is a beneficial chemical compound in the diet of humans by decreasing the levels of serum cholesterol and blood glucose. The ß-glucan contents of oat groats were studied in official variety trials (1997-1999), nitrogen fertilization trials (1997-1999) and organic variety trials (1997-1998) in Finland. Eight cultivars were studied in the organic variety trials. Two of them, cultivars Puhti and Veli, were cultivated also with a conventional method at the same fields. The years 1997 and 1999 were very warm and dry and 1998 very cool and rainy. The effects of year and cultivar on ß-glucan content were significant in all three trial series. The Kolbu oat cultivar had a significantly lower ß- glucan content than other cultivars in all trials. N...
