Possibilities and requirements for organic dairy breeding lines Until now, improvements in the efficiency of organic dairy production have mainly occurred through better management, feeding and production strategies, using the dairy cattle breeds developed in conventional production systems. The potential of breeding lines of dairy cattle that are genetically adapted to organic milk production is essentially unexploited even though specific lines offer the potential to breed for cows with specific characteristics. The main reason why organic lines of dairy cattle not have been established in the past is most likely based on the assumption that the correlation between the breeding goals in the two production systems is above 0.8. As a correlation... |

Six different breeding goal (BG) scenarios were developed and simulated for organic and conventional dairy production, to study the effect on genetic change for specific traits. The first two BGs (BG1 and BG2) were based on economic weights from SimHerd simulations for a conventional and an organic dairy system in Denmark. The third BG (BG3) was based on weights derived from a farmer preference survey for organic farmers. The fourth BG (BG4) was based on the four organic principles defined by the IFOAM, and on the results of a questionnaire that was sent out to farmers, researchers and experts in the area of organic dairy husbandry. The fifth and sixth BGs (BG5 and BG6) were based on BG4, but altered to put more emphasis on roughage consumption and disease... |

The aim was to quantify the factors influencing the detailed milk fatty acid profile. The results of large scale screening of the Danish dairy cattle population for a detailed milk fat composition revealed profound effects of breed, production system, parity, lactation stage and genetics. This opens up the possibility to differentiate the milk at farm level, by management and breeding strategies. |

In this study, we attempt to assess the Danish organic dairy farmers' acceptance of the economic values derived from a stochastic, bio-economic model. We expect the results to show that farmers give increased priority to some traits above the objectively derived economic vaule. |

This presentation provides an overview of the results from the projects "The optimal cow" and "SOBcows". The aim of "The optimal cow" is to derive economic values for breeding goal traits in four different production systems, among them an organic production system. The aim of "SOBcows" is to enhance the size and the profitability of the organic dairy production by adapting the breeding material to organic production circumstances and by indicating sustainable methods for sustainable niche production based on animals with specific genetic characteristics |

Organic dairy farming (ODF) is different from conventional dairy farming in management practices, but so far the same breeding goal (BG) is used, based on the same economic models (EM). However, ODF is based on the principles of organic agriculture defined by the IFOAM, which are not easily interpreted in economic terms and it may be uestionable to use a BG for ODF based on EM. In this study we set up three BGs for ODF in Denmark, one based on the principles of organic agriculture, one focusing on roughage consumption and feed efficiency, and one focusing on disease resistance. A questionnaire and desired gains index were used to set up the BGs. Correlations between these BGs and BGs based on EM were low. Which BG would be best suitable to use for ODF in... |
