Benzothiadiazole induces the accumulation of phenolics in strawberry Organic Eprints
Hukkanen, Anne; Kokko, Harri; Kärenlampi, Sirpa; Karjalainen, Reijo.
We have studied the potency of benzothiadiazole against powdery mildew disease in strawberry under greenhouse conditions, where the disease can be a problem. The results show that, in addition to other cultivation techniques, BTH-induced resistance could be exploited to obtain fruits with higher amount of beneficial health compounds.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.): Identification and characterization of phenolic compounds and protective action against oxidative stress and inflammation Organic Eprints
Saviranta, Niina; Veeroos, Laura; Granlund, Lars; Hassinen, Viivi; Julkunen-Tiitto, Riitta; Kaarniranta, Kai; Salminen, Antero; Karjalainen, Reijo.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), a widely used feed crop, has recently received considerable interest as a valuable source of phenolic compounds with multiple potential protective functions. It is a rich source of isoflavonoids, plant secondary metabolites widely distributed in the Leguminosae family.

Organic production: does it enhance the health-promoting compounds in berries? Organic Eprints
Anttonen, Mikko; Karjalainen, Reijo.
We have analyzed phenolic compounds from organically and conventionally grown blackcurrants and strawberries to test the idea if organically grown berries contain a higher amount of health-promoting phenolic compounds.

Understanding health-promoting bioactive compounds in blackcurrants and their agronomic improvement Organic Eprints
Karjalainen, Reijo; Stewart, Derek; McDougall, Gordon J.; Hilz, Hauke; Anttonen, Mikko; Saviranta, Niina; Mattila, Pirjo; Törrönen, Riitta.
The potential health benefits of black currant based products may be greatly increased if berries from cultivars with high contents of the health-promoting compounds are used as raw materials. The high variability in the levels of flavonols in different black currant cultivars have been demonstrated showing the potential of plant breeding for taking advantage to develop special cultivars for high in health-promoting compounds in target populations. Farming methods either growing organic or conventional means, did not found to have any major influence on the phenolic contents in blackcurrants. With the help of molecular-marker techniques, introgression of defined genes or genome parts possessing health effects is a tool box of modern breeding for...
