Maintaining shellfish production activities, ensuring their quality and optimising the management of reserved space use with a perspective of sustainable growth are questions that interest a very significant block of French coastal sites. To achieve such objectives, it must especially be possible to relate the spatial distribution of the farmed stocks and environmental constraints: physical characteristics of the environment, nutritive resources, health constraints, environmental protection constraints... |

The coastal zone of Charente-Maritime in France has a leading position in oyster culture production. Yet it is being jeopardized by a number of problems such as overstocking, inadequate distribution of culture types, wild stock in excess, and strong siltation processes. Some of these problems result from a lack of communication and realization within the professional community, others due to obsolete management tools. The introduction of geomatics is believed to help provide some answers, besides alleviating the classical task of lease management. This chapter shows how the system was built, the spatial data geo-referenced and linked to administrative data. Examples of queries on the spatial data base reveal some otherwise invisible facts and allow... |

The Bay of Biscay is characterised by large fresh water inputs from two major rivers, the Loire and the Gironde, with a mean discharge of about 900 m(3)/s. To describe the spatial and temporal variability of the Loire and Gironde plumes, continuous salinity measurements were made at 4 locations on French coastal islands over periods lasting at least two years. These islands are located at a distance from the large local gradients linked to local inputs. Whereas sea surface salinity in the centre of the Bay of Biscay is 35.6, salinities at the coast vary between about 35 in summer to occasionally less than 30 in late winter or in spring. Minimum salinities do not occur at the same time along the coast, indicating a strong spatial gradient. Near the Loire... |

This paper describes a method that refers to the integration of analogic data of an Atlantic salt marsh atlas into a GIS. So the steps of the method are developed after a description of the original data sources in the form of analogic thematic cartography and associated text. They include digitalization, geometric corrections, topology and attributes definition, hotlinks setting up between graphics, texts and images, information layers crossing and spatial analyses. Four main results are presented and discussed: (a) the atlas digital form presentation, (b) objects selection and theme surface computation in the case of salt exploitation, (c) salt marsh identification versus inland fresh water marshes, (d) intersection between digital atlas objects and... |

In Marennes-Oléron, Héral (1986) described the relationship between the annual production and the oysters' biomass over a century. His conclusion is that the drop in the growth of oysters was caused by an "overstorage" considering the trophic capacity of the basin. Moreover, the large intertidal spaces, though providing a great opportunity for mollusc culture, suffer from a large bio-deposition (Sornin 1983) which tends to intensify the sedimentation of the basin. The spatial management of oyster culture could be a key factor for its long-term development. In collaboration with the French Marine Affairs, in charge of the cadastral management, the IFREMER has developed a geographical information system enabling the gathering under the same geographic... |
