Phaeosphaeria avenaria f. sp. triticea (anamorfo Stagonospora avenae f. sp. triticea) en trigo, en Argentina Phyton

En los alrededores de Tres Arroyos (prov. de Buenos Aires, Argentina) se observaron plantas de trigo pan ( Triticum aestivum) con manchas foliares, asociadas con picnidios de Stagonospora sp. Se aisló el hongo en medio artificial en el cual se formaron fructificaciones asexuales y sexuales lo que permitió su identificación como Phaeosphaeria avenaria f. sp. triticea (anamorfo S. avenae f. sp. triticea). En ensayos de inoculación experimental se logró infectar a plantas de trigo y cebada, y se reaisló el hongo dando cumplimiento a los Postulados de Koch. Éste es el primer registro de P. avenaria f. sp. triticea en la Argentina.

Freckles, a blemish of onion bulbs caused by Sclerotium sp. Phyton

Freckles is a new blemish of white-scaled onion bulbs in the Lower Rio Colorado Valley (Argentina) characterized by the formation of small sclerotia imbedded in the dry scale tissue. The causal agent has been isolated from scales and symptomless roots of onion and was identified as Sclerotium sp. Although in its host range and morphology it resembles Sclerotium cepivorum, it is quite different with respect to other cultural and pathological traits. In inoculation experiments, onion and garlic plants could be infected and the typical sclerotia were formed, but no rot, a symptom characteristic for S. cepivorum, nor any other tissue deterioration was observed. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum en plantas cultivadas e invasoras del sur pampeano y norte patagónico, Argentina Phyton

Se informa sobre hospedantes, distribución, daños e importancia de Sclerotinia sclerotiorum en la región surpampeana y norpatagónica de la Argentina. Se encontraron infecciones espontáneas en 25 especies vegetales, entre oleaginosas, hortalizas, ornamentales e invasoras. Carduus thoermeri, Xanthium cavanillesii, Marrubium vulgare y Ranunculus repens son hospedantes nuevos de S. sclerotiorum. Los registros en Helianthus tuberosus, Diplotaxis tenuifolia y Cucurbita pepo son nuevos para Argentina. En la región estudiada, S. sclerotiorum causa daños importantes en Helianthus annuus, Glycine max, Apium graveolens, Foeniculum vulgare y Lactuca sativa. Wilt and vascular root rot (Pythium tracheiphilum) of lettuce in Bahía Blanca, Argentina Phyton

A new disease of lettuce has been observed in the surroundings of Bahía Blanca, Argentina. The symptoms include dwarfing, general chlorosis, wilting, root rot, and leaf blight, sometimes followed by plant death. Pythium tracheiphilum Matta was found to be consistently associated with those symptoms. The morphological and morphometric characteristics of this oomycete are described. Isolates obtained from field-infected lettuce plants were inoculated to lettuce and caused similar symptoms as those found in natural infections. Seedling emergence was also severely affected following experimental inoculation. Koch's Postulates were fulfilled by recovering the fungus from inoculated plants. Smudge and other diseases of onion caused by Colletotrichum circinans, in southern Argentina Phyton

While studying the etiology of onion diseases in southern Argentina, a coelomycetous fungus was found associated with diverse disease expressions. They included the typical smudge symptoms in white onion bulbs in local markets as well as field infections on yellow- and red-coloured cultivars, with severe infections on transplants in the seed-bed. The fungus was isolated and identified as Colletotrichum circinans on the basis of its morphological, morphometric, biological and pathological characteristics. Two isolates, obtained from white bulbs and from transplants, were inoculated on bulbs of white and yellow-coloured cultivars and produced the typical smudge symptoms on the outer scales.
