Spatio-temporal distribution, combined with aspects of insect biology and ecology can influence the infestation risk of the key pea pest Cydia nigricana in vegetable- and field peas. The proximity of pea fields of the previous cultivation period highly affects the infestation potential of the moth. The presented study aims to monitor the infestation development in three different regions in Germany (North Hesse, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt) in four consecutive years and to relate empirical pest incidences to key factors as crop abundance, the distance to previous pea fields, the pea plant phenology and climatic conditions. In a next step, these data will form the basis for the elaboration of a computer-aided decision support system, which assists farmers in... |

The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotasara decemlineata Say) is one of the most important pests on potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). In the present study, we compared the efficacy of three biological insecticides – Neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rapeseed oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (Novodor FC) – against this pest in field trials conducted from 2005 to 2007. The combined and temporarily shifted application of neem and B.t.t. reduced significantly the number of beetle larvae and the percentage of defoliation due to larval feeding, and increased the potato yield considerably. The SIMLEP3 forecasting model is useful for determining the optimal timing of the treatment. Pyrethrum/rapeseed oil did not lead to a significant reduction... |

An improved Decisions Support System (DSS) for the control of Phytopththora infestans in organic potatoes was developed in the frame of the CoFree Project. This work included as primary steps the development of an ontogenetic model (Simonto) based on the BBCH scale of potatoes, and its validation. Additionally, the soil mineral nitrogen dynamics in organic potatoes and nitrogen contents of tuber and leaves were modelled and integrated in the existing DSS Öko-SIMPHYT (www.isip.de). The DSS comprises a correction tool at BBCH 60 for the user to improve the quality of the prediction of potato growth and a termination of copper spraying when potential yield of 90 % is reached. This development was based on intensive data mining in existing data sets from... |

In organic potato cultivation, late blight (Phytophthora infestans) can cause significant losses. Often, the use of copper is necessary, which is limited in organic farming. Öko-SIMPHYT is a decision support system for the termination of copper spraying and the quantity of copper needed. First, you have to provide your exact location, the potato variety, the planting density, the condition of the plants and the recent amount of precipitation. Based on that, the tool presents appropriate recommendations. First, you get a recommended start of treatment. Second, the tool gives a recommendation for the treatment interval, the quantity needed and a possible treatment break as well as a prediction for the risk of infection. |

The Colorado Potato Beetle is one of the most important pests of potatoes. The effect of various plant protection products based on neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rape oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis - B.t.t. (Novodor FC) against this pest has been compared in a field experiment from 2004 until 2006. The combined application of neem and B.t.t.-product have reduced the number of Colorado Potato Beetle larvae as well as the losses of plant material by feed of the beetle larvae significantly. In three years of field experiments the application of pyrethrum/rape oil has shown no significant effect to reduce the number of Colorado Potato Beetles. |

Pea moths (Cydia nigricana) can cause severe damages in pea crops (Pisum sativum). Larvae feed on the seeds in the pods and contaminate them with feces. In the cultivation of organic green peas 0.5 % damaged seeds lead to the denial of whole pea fields (Schulz & Saucke 2005). There can be a yield loss in forage peas and a loss of quality of seeds for propagation. Within the framework of the project to improve the spatial and temporal cultivation strategy of peas to get less damage due to pea moths, is the intention. For a better spatial and temporal cultivation strategy, the DSS creates a map with areas with an infestation risk factor. The higher the risk factor, the earlier the new fields should be cultivated. Therefore, the first part of the DSS... |

The project CO-FREE (2012-2016) aimed to develop strategies to replace/reduce copper use in organic, integrated and conventional farming. CO-FREE alternative test products (CTPs) were tested and integrated together with decision support systems, disease-tolerant varieties, and innovative breeding goals (ideotypes) into improved management strategies. CO-FREE focused on apple/apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), grape/downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and tomato and potato/late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Starting point of the project were ten CTPs with direct or indirect modes of action including Trichoderma atroviride SC1 and protein extract SCNB, Lysobacter spp., yeast-based derivatives, Cladosporium cladosporioides H39, the oligosaccharidic complex... |
