Occurrence of adhesin-encoding operons in Escherichia coli isolated from breeders with salpingitis and chicks with omphalitis BJM
Knöbl,Terezinha; Gomes,Tânia A. Tardelli; Vieira,Mônica A. Midolli; Bottino,José A.; Ferreira,Antonio J. Piantino.
The occurrence of fim, pap and sfa operons in Escherichia coli isolated from breeders with salpingitis and chicks with omphalitis was evaluated. Analysis of 100 E. coli isolates, by colony hybridization tests, showed that 78 (78%) were fim+, one (1%) was sfa+, seven (7%) were fim+ associated with pap+, eigth (8%) were fim+ and sfa+, one (1%) was fim+pap+sfa+ and five (5%) isolates did not hybridize with any probe. These results suggest that fim adhesion-encoding operon plays an important role in pathogenesis of E. coli infection in chickens with salpingitis and omphalitis.

Survey on pathogenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in captive cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) BJM
Pontes,Patricia Silveira de; Coutinho,Selene Dall’ Acqua; Iovine,Renata de Oliveira; Cunha,Marcos Paulo Vieira; Knöbl,Terezinha; Carvalho,Vania Maria de.
Abstract We surveyed healthy captive cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) for Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Cloacal swabs were collected from 94 cockatiels kept in commercial breeders, private residencies and pet shops in the cities of São Paulo/SP and Niterói/RJ (Brazil). Three strains of E. coli from each individual were tested for the presence of ExPEC-, APEC- and DEC-related genes. We evaluated the blaTEM, blaSHV, blaOXA, blaCMY, blaCTX-M, tetA, tetB, aadA, aphA, strAB, sul1, sul2, sul3, qnrA, qnrD, qnrB, qnrS, oqxAB, aac (6)′-Ib-cr, qepA resistance genes and markers for plasmid incompatibility groups. Salmonella spp. was not detected. E. coli was isolated in 10% of the animals (9/94). Four APEC genes (ironN, ompT, iss and hlyF) were detected in...

Some adhesins of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) isolated from septicemic poultry in Brazil BJM
Knöbl,Terezinha; Gomes,Tânia Aparecida Tardelli; Vieira,Mônica Aparecida Midolli; Ferreira,Fernando; Bottino,José Américo; Ferreira,Antônio José Piantino.
Three hundred and fifty strains of E. coli isolated from septicemic poultry from seven states of Brazil were examined for presence of nine adhesion-encoding genes, hemagglutination and adherence to chicken tracheal cells (in vitro). Analysis of the strains by colony hybridization tests demonstrated that 93.7% of the isolates were fim +, 17% pap+ and 5.7% were sfa+. The mannose sensitive fimbriae occur with similar frequency in APEC isolated from all Brazilians states, while significant differences among pap and sfa genes distributions were observed. The results showed that 0.85% and 0.28% of APEC were positive for genes that encoded enteroaggregative adhesins and EPEC adherence factor, respectively. None of APEC was positive for DA, afa, Bfp and Eae...
