In a field experiment three cultivation systems in organic onion production were compared: direct sowing, planting of set-onions and planting of seedlings with three to five seeds in each tray. The system with set-onions was the most efficient in terms of planting and sowing costs respectively and costs for manual weeding. The production costs of onions grown in the direct sowing system were 50 % higher than in the set-onion system. Directly sown onions have generally the best storage properties. Therefore this cultivation system may be an option if storability of the onions is important. The system with planted seedlings turned out to be the most expensive, hence it is only suited for special situations. |

Preventative measures and the creation of resilient growing systems are key parts of pest management practice in organic field vegetable production (see also chapter 1). Soil improvement, crop rotation, site selection, habitat management, variety choice, timing of planting and plant spacing are all considered before planting in order to avoid the most detrimental pest problems. Im biologischen Zwiebelanbau ist der Aufwand für das manuelle Hacken und Jäten sehr hoch und daher oft ein limitierender Faktor. Die frühe Saat (oder Pflanzung) erschwert eine vorgängige Unkrautkur, wie das bei der Lagerkarotte z.B. gut möglich ist. Ein Ausweg dafür ist das Pflanzen der Zwiebeln, anstatt die Direktsaat. In dieser Arbeit wurde der Aufwand in den verschiedenen Zwiebelsystemen (Direktsaat, über Steckzwiebeln und Pflanzung) verglichen und nach Optimierungsmöglichkeiten innerhalb des jeweiligen Anbausystems gesucht. Insbesondere wurde geprüft ob mit einem Vlieseinsatz vor dem Abflammen, der Erfolg dieser Massnahme verbessert werden kann. |

Powdery mildew attacks several important crops in greenhouses (e.g. tomatoes, cucumbers). Compared to other airborne pathogens, such as downy mildews (e.g. Pseudoperonospora cubensis or Phytophthora infestans) or Botrytis, the damage is often not very severe. However, an effective control of powdery mildew with organic fungicides gives the possibility to optimize climate conditions to also prevent downy mildews and gray mold. Sulphur, a well established fungicide, is rated as slightly to very harmful to beneficial organisms (Koppert Biological Systems, 2010) and may have a phytotoxic effect on some crops (e.g. melon). A transplant can be defined as a seedling or sprouted vegetative propagation material grown in a substrate or in the field, for transfer to the final cropping site. Nurseries use a range of growing media in the production of transplants, and the quality of a substrate may be defined in terms of its feasibility for the intended use and also according to the climatic condition of the production site.
