Free-range pigs integrated with agroforestry Organic Eprints
Jakobsen, Malene; Kongsted, Anne Grete.
Among consumers there is an increasing interest in pork from conventional and organic free-range production. In many ways free-range production support animal welfare in terms of animals being able to perform species-specific behaviour. However, there are also some serious challenges related to animal health and welfare. Sudden death of lactating sows related to the disease complex called ‘summer-sows’ is a huge challenge on some farms and is expected to be related to heat stress. Furthermore, sows are snout-ringed which prevents them from performing species-specific behaviour such as rooting. Rooting destroys the grass cover thereby increasing the risk of nutrient leaching. Integration of free-range pigs with agroforestry, e.g. production of tree biomass...

Strategies for a diversified organic pork production – an upcoming project Organic Eprints
Kongsted, Anne Grete; Hermansen, John E.; Claudi-Magnussen, Chris; Andersen, Bent Hindrup; Jensen, Helle Frank.
The objective of this project is to identify strategies for a diversified organic pork production with superior sensory quality based on pigs foraging in the cropping system. Three categories of slaughter pigs (young entire male pigs, female pigs of more than 100 kg and first parity sows) will be investigated and a traditional breed will be compared with a modern crossbred.

Økologiske svin bliver sendt i skoven Organic Eprints
Kongsted, Anne Grete.

Kyed, Sybille; Kongsted, Anne Grete; Jørgensen, Uffe; Hermansen, John E..

Feeding monogastrics 100% organic and regionally produced feed Organic Eprints
Díaz-Gaona, Cipriano; Kongsted, Anne Grete; Nørgaard, Jan Værum; Papi, Eugenio; Perez, Angela Morell; Reyes-Palomo, Carolina; Rodríguez-Estévez, Vicente; Roinsard, Antoine; Steenfeldt, Sanna; Studnitz, Merete; Stødkilde-Jørgensen, Lene; Theil, Peter Kappel; Åkerfeldt, Magdalena.
The transition to 100% organic feed ingredients for organic livestock is expected to take effect from January 1st 2020 in Europe. In order to contribute to the goal of 100% use of organic and regional feed for monogastrics, this knowledge synthesis “Feeding monogastrics 100% organic and regionally produced feed“ aims to describe: • the protein need for organic monogastric animals (pigs, layers and broilers), including different breeds and rearing conditions • different protein feed resources, mostly new or not commonly used protein sources, their nutrient content, production prerequisites, and their potential feeding value • small-scale, on-farm equipment for feed processing • different feeding strategies. The knowledge synthesis should enable...

Organic pig production – With particular reference to Danish production conditions Organic Eprints
Kongsted, Anne Grete; Hermansen, John E..
While there is a markedly growth in organically farmed land and in the organic food sector as such in Europe and North America, the organic pig sector has not developed correspondingly in most countries. This weaker development seems most likely to be due to difficulties for pig producers to comply with the organic standards, which impose comparatively more pronounced changes in the way of production than e.g. in ruminant production systems. Pigs should have access to roughage and to grazing in the summer period although finishers can be kept in barns if access to an outdoor rum. A common way to comply with these regulations is to have sows on grassland all year round, but to rear the finishers in stables. Outdoor piglet production can be very efficient...

Outdoor multi-sire mating system: A feasible way for organic piglet production? Organic Eprints
Kongsted, Anne Grete; Hermansen, John E..
The outdoor multi-sire mating system complies with the organic ideal of allowing animals to conduct their natural behaviour. Due to large differences in mating qualities between the teams of boars, the preliminary results of this study indicate that the system, as practiced today, is characterised by unacceptable varying reproduction results. The poor mating quality was related mainly to competition between boars, sows not able to support the weight of the boars and poor mating dexterity of some boars. To improve the system, these parameters much be taken into consideration

Improved sustainability in organic pig production Organic Eprints
Kongsted, Anne Grete; Hermansen, John E.; Jakobsen, Malene.
The local and global sale of organic pork produced in Denmark has increased markedly in recent years. Organic pig production is associated with several positive aspects from a societal point of view e.g. very low use of antibiotics and animals being able to express more of their natural behavior compared to conventional production. However, there are some challenges regarding sustainability that needs to be addressed. In Denmark, organic pig production is based on outdoor sow production all year round while the majority of growing pigs are kept in stables with access to a concrete covered outdoor run. The outdoor production of sows imposes a significant risk of nutrient leaching, especially in paddocks with lactating sows. The outdoor run for growing pigs...

Økologisk hangriseproduktion: Er dyrevelfærden i orden? Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Kongsted, Anne Grete; Rousing, Tine; Bonde, Marianne.
