Through the courtesy of Dr. J. Roux, to whom I am very thankful, I received for identification from the "Naturhistorisches Museum" at Basle a collection of Fishes from Siam, collected by Dr. H. Bernatzik in 1936 and 1937. The collection consists of representatives of 37 species, among which the type of a new species. Barilius bernatziki nov. spec. (fig. 1). D. 3.8; A. 3.9; P. 1.14; V. 1.8; L.l. 31 + 2; L.tr. T. 6 1/2 / 1/ 3 1/2. Body elongate, strongly compressed, dorsal profile less convex than ventral profile; height 3 1/4 in length, 4 1/5 in total length. Head compressed, 4 in length, a little more than 5 in total length. Eye 3 1/2 in head, interorbital flat, 1 eye diameter. Circumorbital bones large. Snout as long as eye, tip before upper edge of... |

During the stay of the Nica-detachment at Port Dickson, Malaya, in March 1946, a small collection of fishes was made, which was presented by Major Dr. L. D. Brongersma to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. Besides these fishes from Malaya, two specimens of flying fishes from the Indian Ocean were presented. The collection from Port Dickson was pretty small, 45 specimens in total, belonging to 25 species. It gives therefore by no means an idea of the fishfauna of Malaya. The fishfauna of the Westcoast of Malaya is still imperfectly known, so even this small collection can contribute to the knowledge of this fauna. The species are arranged according to the system followed by M. Weber & L. F. de Beaufort in their Fishes of the... |

In Notes on Gobioid Fishes 6, Zool. Meded. XVIII, 1935, p. 121—150. I gave some synonyms. After a study of the collection of Gobioid fishes in the British Museum (Natural History) in June 1935, I found some new synonyms, which I give below. I am much obliged to Mr. J. R. Norman, Assistant Keeper of Zoology, for his kind help during my study. Bathygobius fuscus (Rüpp.) To the synonyms given on p. 121—122 in Zool. Meded. XVIII, 1935 I add: Gobius elegans var. Cantor, Cat. Mal. Fishes, Journ. As. Soc. Bengal XVIII, (1849) 1850, p. 1161. Gobius elegans Günther, Cat. Fishes III, 1861, p. 18 (not of C. & V.). Gobius graeffii Günther, Fische der Südsee VI, Journ. Mus. Godeffroy XIII, 1877, p. 179. As I stated (1.c., p. 138), Gobius elegans var. of Cantor,... |

This genus was established by Dr. P. BLEEKER in 1874 1) for fishes belonging to the phalanx Sicydiini having the caracteristics: „Dentes intermaxillares stipitati apice clavati obtusi, inframaxillares serie interna parvi aequales, serie externa aciculares. Maxilla inferior cirris nullis. Squamae capite et trunco antice nullae, lateribus 40 circ. in serie longitudinali. B. 4. D. 5—10 vel 11. A. 11 vel 12. Sp. typ. Sicydium gymnauchen BLKR." (Bleeker l. c. p. 314). Afterwards in 1876 BLEEKER 2) gives the following description of this genus: „Corpus subelongatum vel elongatum squamatum, capite obtuso alepidoto, maxilla inferiore non cirrata. Dentes, intermaxillares mobiles uniseriati stipitati apice clavati obtusi, inframaxillares biseriati serie interna... |

In preparing the volume of the Gobioidea in M. Weber and L. F. de Beaufort: The Fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, several described species, collected in the Indo-Australian Archipelago or its surroundings, were not clear to me. Of a number of these the description was distinct enough to see what was meant with such a new species, but there were several species which I could not recognize from their description. Bleeker described a large number of new species, but, unfortunately, several of his descriptions are too vague to recognize the species. So many authors had described several species which proved, after comparison with Bleeker's type specimens or descriptions made after his types, to be either closely allied, or identical with species... |

Introduction. The measurements given in this note and following notes are expressed in hundredths of length and are made by means of dividers. They are taken about in the same way as used by the American authors. The length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the last vertebra. The depth is taken at the deepest part of the body, the depth of caudal peduncle halfway the peduncle. Length of head from tip of snout to the upper end of the posterior edge of operculum. Length of snout from its tip to the anterior margin of the orbit. Width of interorbital space is measured with the dividers pinched tightly between the bony orbits. Diameter of orbit is measured longitudinally. Distance from snout to D 1 from the tip of the snout to the insertion... |

During his paleontological searches in Java, the late Prof. Eug. Dubois collected a number of fossil fish remains. His searches were instituted mainly in pleistocene deposits, and as far as I am aware these fish remains were the first of their kind to be collected in Java in strata of that age. This, and the fact that Dubois (1907, 1908) referred to these fish in two preliminary papers, gives this collection additional interest. In the first of his preliminary papers, Dubois (1907, p. 455) mentions the following fish: Anabas microcephalus, Clarias magur, Ophiocephalus, Carcharias gangeticus. In the second paper, Dubois (1908, p. 1239) mentions that at least seven species of freshwater fish are represented in his collection, viz., Anabas microcephalus,... |

Through the courtesy of Mr. K. van Vuure, officer of the Fisheries at Pasoeroean, Java, the Leiden Museum received a very interesting collection of fishes from the eastern part of Java. The collection was made in November 1938 and contained both freshwater and marine species. On a joined list of each lot the vernacular name was given and the exact locality, giving the village (desa), district, regency (regentschap) and residence (residentie); these topographical names are stated in this paper as desa, distr., reg. and res. The vernacular names are partly Javanese, partly Madurese, indicated as Jav. and Mad. The fishes are arranged according to the system of Günther's Catalogue of Fishes. Epinephelus merra Bl., 1 specimen, desa Tandjoeng Petjinan, distr.... |
