Influence of gentle touching applied few weeks before slaughter on avoidance distance and slaughter stress in finishing cattle Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
The present study investigated the effect of gentle touching applied during the last 5 weeks before slaughter in finishing cattle on behaviour towards humans, stress indicators and beef quality. Three Experiments were carried out. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 employed eight Limousin crossbred bulls, eight Piemontese crossbreds (six females, two steers) and ten Limousin crossbreds (three females, seven steers), respectively. Half of the animals were equally assigned to a treatment and a control group. The treatment group consisted of a standardized gentle head-neck-region touching and started 5 weeks before slaughter and was continued once a week in experiments 1 and 2 and twice a week in experiment 3 during the following 5 weeks. Avoidance distance tests (ADT)...

Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
This research investigated the effect of a handling treatment in beef cattle on stress related parameters. Ten 15 months old Limousin beef cattle (crossbreds) were divided in a handling group (HG) and a control group (KG) by pairing animals with similar avoidance distances. The back-region handlings were carried out 10 times for 8 min during 5 weeks before slaughter. Before and after all handling sessions, each animal was tested by an avoidance distance test (AWD). From each carcass, samples of M. longissimus dorsi were analysed for meat quality (cooking loss, shear force and meat colour). Differences between first and second avoidance distance test were greater in HG animals. Avoidance distance got much lower in HG animals than in KG animals. Shear force...

Chronic intermittent stress exposure and access to grass silage interact differently in their effect on behaviour, gastric health and stress physiology of entire or castrated male growing finishing pigs Organic Eprints
Holinger, Mirjam; Früh, Barbara; Stoll, Peter; Graage, Robert; Wirth, Sandra; Bruckmaier, Rupert; Prunier, Armelle; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.
Entire male pigs display more aggressive and sexual behaviour. This might cause a condition of chronic stress and impair their welfare. In order to assess chronic stress in entire and castrated male pigs, as well as effects of providing grass silage as occupational and feed material on behaviour and health, we carried out a 2 × 2 × 2-factorial experiment with 147 growing-finishing pigs. Factors investigated were castration (entire/castrated), chronic intermittent social stress exposure (yes/no) and access to grass silage (yes/no), as well as their interactions. The stress exposure treatment consisted of repeated short-term confrontations and separations. We recorded different behavioural variables, circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol, response to an ACTH...

Probst, Johanna Karolina; Spengler Neff, Anet; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.

Plants with moderate contents of condensed tannins are assumed to have anthelmintic Plants with moderate contents of condensed tannins are assumed to have anthelmintic properties and to improve protein supply of ruminants by reducing its ruminal degradability. In the present study, birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), chicory (Cychorium intybus) and sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), suitable to be grown in Central Europe, were tested for their suitability as feed for ruminants. Sainfoin proved to be the most promising forage plant since it was very well accepted by the sheep and presented the highest content of utilizable crude protein as determined in vitro. Only few condensed tannins were detected in chicory. Further in vivo studies are required to...

Gentle touching in early life reduces avoidance distance and slaughter stress in beef cattle Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna; Spengler Neff, Anet; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.
This study investigated the effect of gentle touching applied during the early life of suckler beef calves on avoidance distance on-farm and stress reactions at the abattoir. Twentyseven Limousin crossbred calves were assigned to a treatment (n = 13) or a control group (n = 14) balanced by sex and day of birth. Gentle touching, using the TTouch© method, began on the second day post partum and was continued on the following 2 days. Additional touching was conducted on 3 non-consecutive days during the following 3 weeks in the home pen. Each treatment lasted for 10 min and was repeated once after 30 min. Individual avoidance distance was assessed 6 times. Following this test, all voluntary approaches towards the test person were recorded. All animals were...

Grass silage for growing-finishing pigs in addition to straw bedding: Effects on behaviour and gastric health Organic Eprints
Holinger, Mirjam; Früh, Barbara; Stoll, Peter; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.
In organic and other enriched housing systems, straw is commonly used as enrichment material for pigs. Its positive effects on health and behavioural welfare are well known. However, potential additional impacts of roughages (other than straw) have rarely been investigated. On six organic farms, we therefore investigated how providing grass silage affects behaviour, gastric health and performance of growing-finishing pigs. Per farm, two to four pens were included in the experiment, with group sizes ranging from five to 26 pigs (total n = 368), and stocking density ranging from 1.65 to 3.50 m2 per pig during finishing. Groups were provided with either grass silage (SIL) or straw (CON) in a rack. Long-stack straw was used as bedding material in all pens....

Effects of vegetation type and breed on n-3 and n-6 fatty acid proportions in heart, lung and brain phospholipids of lambs Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Willems, Helen; Werne, Steffen; Ammer, Stefanie; Kreuzer, Michael.
The known influence of forage composition on fatty acid (FA) profiles in ruminants’ meat and milk may be different for other organs. Therefore, in the present study FA profiles of phospholipids in lung tissue, heart muscle and brain (medulla oblongata) were examined in growing Engadine and Valaisian Blacknose sheep grazing 4 pastures of different botanical composition, whereof three were extensively managed natural mountain swards. An intensively managed lowland pasture represented the control. On each pasture type, 6–7 lambs of each breed (54 in total) grazed for 9 weeks and were subsequently slaughtered. Tissue samples were taken at slaughter, homogenized and analyzed for FA profiles after phospholipid extraction. Response to the diets was tissue...

Fatty acid profile of ghee derived from two genotypes (cattle–yak vs. yak) grazing different alpine Himalayan pasture sites Organic Eprints
Marquardt, Svenja; Barsila, Shanker R.; Amelchanka, Sergej L.; Devkota, N.R.; Kreuzer, Michael; Leiber, Florian.
The fatty acid (FA) profile of ghee produced from milk of cattle–yak hybrids grazing five mountain pasture sites along a high-alpine transhumance route in Nepal was analysed. Pastures differed in altitude above sea level(2600–4500 m), time period of being grazed and phytochemical composition of the swards. Additionally, a comparison of ghee from purebred yak and hybrid was performed, with samples produced at two of the sites. Pasture site had a strong effect on almost all FAs. Proportions of oleic, linoleic and a-linolenic acid in ghee were smallest on the highest pasture at 4500 m where the largest condensed tannin concentrations in the forages were found. No systematic site effects were found for c9,t11 conjugated linoleic acid and total polyunsaturated...

Leiber, Florian; Kunz, Carmen; Wettstein, Hans-Rudolf; Kreuzer, Michael.

Reduction of slaughterhouse stress in beef cattle by facilitating animal tameness Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Leiber, Florian; Hillmann, Edna; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
The relationship between animals and humans is important for animal husbandry and welfare. Loosehousing and grazing systems with low management input often result in frail relationships between humans and animals. This study investigated whether a positive handling, applied during the first days of the animals’ life, had a calming and stress reducing effect on suckler beef calves at slaughter.

Nitrogen fertilizer value of cattle manure applied on soils originating from organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Langmeier, Monika; Frossard, Emmanuel; Kreuzer, Michael; Mäder, Paul; Dubois, David; Oberson, Astrid.
Nitrogen nutrition of plants in organic farming depends largely on animal manure. In a pot experiment the hypothesis was tested that on a long-term organically managed soil (ORG) characterized by higher soil microbial activity, a greater portion of N applied as cattle manure is mineralized and taken up by plants than on a conventionally managed soil that had received exclusively mineral fertilizers (MIN). Dry matter yields and N uptake by Italian ryegrass were higher by around 20% on ORG than MIN soil. The N utilization of 15N labeled animal manure components and mineralNdiffered little between ORG and MIN. The major part of the increasedNuptake on ORG compared with MIN was due to a significantly greater N supply from ORG soil. The increased capacity of...

Milk fatty acid composition of dairy cows fed greenwhole-plant buckwheat, phacelia or chicory in theirvegetative and reproductive stage Organic Eprints
Kälber, Tasja; Kreuzer, Michael; Leiber, Florian.
tThe hypothesis was tested that the phenological stage of dicotyledonous forages influencesmilk fatty acid (FA) composition of dairy cows. For this purpose buckwheat (Fagopyrum escu-lentum) and phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia; both in their first year of cultivation) as well aschicory (Cychorium intybus; second year) were cultivated in mixture with ryegrass (Loliummultiflorum). After 35 days of growth, feeding the green forages to 3 × 6 late lactating dairycows at ad libitum access started. The realized dietary dry matter proportions of the testplants were (vegetative and reproductive stage): buckwheat, 0.60 and 0.55; chicory, 0.70and 0.69; phacelia, 0.51 and 0.48. Experimental feeding lasted for 23, 17 and 26 days withbuckwheat, chicory and phacelia,...
