Organic dairy production based on rapeseed, rapeseed cake or cereals as supplement to silage ad libitum 21
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Ingvartsen, Klaus L.; Kristensen, Troels; Seested, Susanne; Thamsborg, Stig M..
This experiment presents the effect of 100% organic feed rations grown at an equal area per cow on milk production performance and metabolic responses. A total of 174 Danish Holstein cows were included in two experiments on two commercial organic dairy farms during the winter 2000/2001. Three types of supplementary feed were examined: 5 kg cereals, 3 kg rapeseed/cereal pellet or 1 kg rapeseed cake fed with a mixture of clover grass silage, whole crop silage and grass pellets ad libitum. The supplement of rapeseed/cereal pellet compared with cereals tended to decrease both milk fat and protein content, whereas fat and protein yield were unaffected. Milk yield was increased by supplement of rapeseed/cereal pellet compared with cereals in experiment 1, but...

Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels.

CLA-indhold i komælk 21
Refsgaard Andersen, Henning; Sejrsen, Kristen; Sørensen, Martin Tang; Kristensen, Troels; Straarup, Else Marie.

Effect of dairy management on quality characteristics of milk 21
Slots, Tina; Leifert, Carlo; Butler, Gillian; Kristensen, Troels; Nielsen, Jacob Holm.
The objective of the study was (i) to compare the nutritional composition of milk produced in organic and conventional production systems taking into consideration: different proportions of grass or grass silage, maize silage and different amount of concentrate (cereals), and (ii) to define the variation in content of pro- and antioxidants in milk in relation to regional variation, feeding and season. The feeding regime from 25 farms from Denmark, 20 farms from Sweden and 25 farms from United Kingdom was reg-istered and milk samples were collected and analysed for the content of antioxidants and fatty acid compo-sition. The daily milk production was significantly higher in the conventional milk production systems in the two Scandinavian countries compared...

Effect of barley or rape seed cake as supplement to silage for high-yielding organic dairy cows 21
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels.
An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of barley or rape seed cake as supplement to silage given ad libitum on milk production and health of dairy cows. A total of 103 cows were divided into two groups on two farms. Before the experiment, the cows had an average milk yield of 26.9 kg ECM and they were in milk for an average of 99 days. Their average parity was 2.3 and their weight 596 kg. The cows in each group received either solely barley or an isoenergetic mixture of rape cake seed and barley as supplement. The supplement feed was fed frequently by automatic feeding. A mixture of clover grass silage and whole crop silage was fed ad libitum. The daily milk yields were not significantly different in the barley and rape seed cake...

Effect of concentrate supplementation level on production, health and efficiency in an organic dairy herd 21
Sehested, Jakob; Kristensen, Troels; Søegaard, Karen.
The proportions of organic feed and roughage in the feed ration for organic dairy cows have to reach 100 and 60%, respectively, in 2005. The aim of this study was to elucidate the long-term effects of reducing or omitting concentrate supplementation to high genetic merit dairy cows on a basal ad libitum diet of clover-grass (silage and grazing). Three concentrate levels, N, L and L+ (38, 0 and 19% of dry matter (DM) intake, respectively) were investigated in a herd of 60 cows during 3 years. The production in group N was 6723 kg energy corrected milk (ECM) per cow year, based on an intake of 6226 kg DM of which 38% was concentrates. In group L the omission of concentrates reduced intake to 4770 kg DM, and milk production to 5090 kg ECM per cow year. Milk...

Sehested, Jakob; Kristensen, Troels.

Carbon footprint from cheese produced on milk from Holstein and Jersey cows feed hay differing in proportion of herbs 21
Kristensen, Troels; Søegaard, Karen; Eriksen, Jørgen; Mogensen, Lisbeth.
The objective of the study was to assess the impact on emission of green house gasses (GHG) from production of cheese based on milk from different type of hay and breed of cows, and as an integrated part to give figures for emission from production of hay in climate lees favorable for on field hay drying. Emission of GHG was estimate using life cycle assessment with kg of milk and kg of energy corrected milk (ECM) delivered to the dairy factory, and kg of cheese at the retailor level in Denmark as functional units. Allocation at farm gate, between milk and meat, was made by biological relation between energy requirement to milk and meat production or economic allocation and at the dairy between cheese and whey using either economic allocation or system...

Extended lactation may improve cow health and productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emission from organic dairy cows 21
Lehmann, Jesper Overgård; Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels.
The concept of extended lactation is supposed to improve cow health and productivity and at the same time reduce greenhouse emission from high-yielding organic dairy cows in a product perspective. This effect is achieved through fewer calvings per year and hence a production of fewer replacement heifers, which then reduces the annual herd requirement for feed. We believe that the average milk yield per feeding day – days lactating plus days dry – per cow will be unchanged. However, this requires that the average cow will have to produce milk for a longer timeframe, and thus they will become older before being culled. We believe this will be a derived effect of the improved cow health as the majority of disease incidences occur around the time of calving....

Developments in greenhouse gas emissions and net energy use in Danish agriculture - How to achieve substantial CO2 reductions? 21
Dalgaard, Tommy; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Petersen, B.M.; Petersen, Søren O.; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, Troels; Hutchings, Nicholas J.; Gyldenkerne, Steen; Hermansen, J.E..
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture are a significant contributor to total Danish emissions. Consequently, much effort is currently given to the exploration of potential strategies to reduce agricultural emissions. This paper presents results from a study estimating agricultural GHG emissions in the form of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide (including carbon sources and sinks, and the impact of energy consumption/bioenergy production) from Danish agriculture in the years 1990-2010. An analysis of possible measures to reduce the GHG emissions indicated that a 50-70% reduction of agricultural emissions by 2050 relative to 1990 is achievable, including mitigation measures in relation to the handling of manure and fertilisers,...

Parameters affecting the environmental impact of a range of dairy farming systems in Denmark, Germany and Italy 21
Guerci, Matteo; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Bava, Luciana; Zucali, Maddalena; Schönbach, Philipp; Kristensen, Troels.
The environmental impact of 12 dairy farms in Denmark, Germany and Italy was evaluated using an LCA approach and the most important parameters influencing their environmental sustainability were identified. The farms represent different production methods (organic vs. conventional), summer feeding systems (confinement vs. pasture) and annual production levels (6275–10,964 kg ECM cow−1). There was large variability in stocking rates (1.1–11.0 LU ha−1) among farms, which has a major impact on the production per unit area of farmland, on feed self-sufficiency and on farm surplus of nitrogen. The proportion of grassland on farmland used for forage production or pasture varied from 0 to 100%. The lowest global warming potential (GWP), acidification,...

A decision support model simulating the vitamin supply over the year on a farm 21
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels; Jensen, Søren K..
The aim of this new project is to develop a prototype of a decision support model simulating the feed and vitamin supply during a year to different groups of animals (calves, heifers, dry cows, cows in early and late lactation) on a farm self-sufficient with feed. The model takes into account that the content of vitamin depends on choice of crops, utilization method, cutting date, conservation method and duration of storage together with traditional optimizing the feed-ing scheme.

Effect of Herbage on Milk Composition 21
Fretté, Xavier C.; Kristensen, Troels; Eriksen, Jørgen; Søegaard, Karen; Sørensen, John; Nielsen, Jacob H..
A grazing study was performed in 2006 over three two-week periods in May, June and August at the organic research station Rugballegaard, Denmark, where a herd of 48 Holstein dairy cows was split into four groups of 12 cows. Each group grazed one of four swards: 1) lucerne, 2) red clover, 3) white clover and 4) white clover with chicory, all four in mixture with perennial ryegrass. Milk and grass samples were analyzed to study the effect of each sward type on milk composition as well as seasonal variations.

Integrated forage and livestock production 21
Hermansen, John E.; Kristensen, Troels.
Integrated forage and livestock production can be considered at the farm level and at the herd or animal level. At the farm level it is relevant to consider the overall utilization of N in the system in relation to crops and livestock. It is demonstrated that in organic dairy production a high transformation efficiency of N from input to edible products can be achieved compared, with conventional production. In addition, combining dairy and pig production allows an even higher N utilization. At the herd level the quality of grass or clover-grass based forage is extremely important. This holds for the overall intake and milk production in dairy cows and for the intake of clover-grass by grazing sows. In addition the composition of the sward should be...

Cows fed vitamin-rich feed produce vitamin-rich milk 21
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels; Jensen, Søren K.; Søegaard, Karen.
On five organic dairy farms there was a positive effect of a high vitamin content in the home-grown roughage on the vitamin content of the milk produced. Vitamins and minerals are of crucial importance for the health and performance of the animals, and they also affect the nutritional value of the products. The highest concentrations of pro-vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and vitamin E (alfa-tocopherol) are found in grass, legumes and other green plants, while seeds and whole-crop silage only contain small amounts of vitamins. While the requirements for for fat-soluble vitamins of grazing cattle are normally met via their intake from pasture, the supply of fat-soluble vitamins may decrease to very low amounts when conserved herbage is used...

Content of fatty acids, vitamin E and carotenoids in milk and herbage as affected by sward composition and period of grazing 21
Larsen, Mette Krogh; Fretté, Xavier C.; Kristensen, Troels; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, Karen; Nielsen, J.H..
The quality of organic milk is affected by feed composition, and especially the high use of legumes has been identified as the reason for high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids and tocopherols in organic milk. Four different pastures composed of mainly white clover (WCL), red clover (RCL), lucerne (LUC) or chicory (CIK), respectively, were established to investigate the influence of sward composition on the milk quality of grazing cows. On three occasions during the grazing period (May, June and August), groups of 12 Holstein cows were grazing the pastures for two weeks. About 70% of the daily dry matter intake was pasture, and the remaining dry matter intake was a mixture of oats, hay and minerals (82%, 16%, 2%, respectively). The...

Prototyping of organic dairy production systems self-sufficient with feed – consequences on productivity, environment and economy 21
Mogensen, Lisbeth; Kristensen, Troels; Danfær, Allan.
In 2005, 100% organically grown feed become a requirement for all organic dairy cows in EU. To create a better understanding of which effect introducing 100% organically grown feed will have on the whole farming system, six production strategies was set up and the effects on productivity, environment effect and economy were analysed. The strategies differ with respect to type of concentrated feed, level of fresh grass-clover in the ration and length of the calving interval. It was found that supplement of cereal, rapeseed/cereals or grass pellets gave very similar productivity and economic result, but supplement of rapeseed cake reduced crop production and economic result. Increased level of grazing has a smaller positive effect on the economic result. On...
