The epidemic proportions of overweight and obesity prevalence have made it not only a public health threat, but also an economic problem. The high caloric density and increased consumption of food-away-from-home endorse the possibility of significant effects of it on obesity. The objective of this study is to model meals consumed away from home consumption by accounting for consumer heterogeneity in making food consumption decisions. We use random coefficient modeling to estimate a negative binomial model to reveal consumer heterogeneity effects on food away from home. Nonresponse is a pervasive and persistent problem in survey data. This research reviews several methods for imputing missing values. A special emphasis is placed on the multiple imputation methods as a more generalizable advanced remedy to missingness. An empirical application of these methods, along with a regression or conditional mean imputation, is provided. Contingent upon certain properties of data, inference based guidance to the choice and implementation of these methods is provided. Food away from home is recognized as one of the reasons behind recent overweight and obesity surge. The relationship between Body Mass Index and the distributional effects of food consumed at home and away from home at different levels of aggregation, along with demographic profile covariates are modeled. Demographic variables have the expected effects on BMI established by other studies. Food away from home has a significant positive effect on BMI. The effects of food away from home split into foods at Full- and Quick-service restaurants also affect BMI in the predicted way, with the latter effect being disproportionately larger.
