Distribution patterns in Atlantic hydroids Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; López-González, P.J..
The present study is a first attempt to comparing the hydroid faunas of the various Zoogeographie areas of the Atlantic Ocean. We restricted ourselves to species of the orders Antho- and Leptomedusae, of which 1050 species were taken into account. The classification of zoogeographic areas used follows Ekman and Briggs, with slight modifications; thus, the Strait of Gibraltar is here considered as a separate zoogeographic area due to its character of a transition zone between several areas in the Northeastern Atlantic Region. Species were arranged into Zoogeographic groups to compare the faunal composition of the various Zoogeographic areas. The Dice similarity index was used for each comparison. The fauna of North-eastern Region can be split into three...

North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean species of Cornulariidae Dana, 1846 (Anthozoa: Stolonifera) with the description of a new genus Naturalis
López-González, P.J.; Ocaña, O.; García-Gómez, J.C.; Núñez, J..
The North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean species of the family Cornulariidae are re-examined and taxonomically revised. This family is mainly characterized by the absence of sclerites. Up to now, only one genus, Cornularia Lamarck, 1816, has been assigned to the family. Studies of the internal and external anatomy of the European species of Cornulariidae, carried out for the first time on a comparative basis, leads us to propose a new genus, Cervera. New combinations of the species included in the family are proposed. The main characters of Cervera gen. nov. are the presence of a fine chitinous periderm, various communication canals in the stolons and the absence of a additional chitinous layer that covers the periderm. Cornularia atlantica Johnson,...

Onubactis rocioi gen. et spec. nov., a new species of Actiniidae (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) from the southern Iberian Peninsula Naturalis
López-González, P.J.; Hartog, J.C. den; García-Gómez, J.C..
A new genus and species of sea anemone, Onubactis rocioi gen. et spec. nov. (Actiniidae) is described from the Atlantic coast of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The main features of Onubactis rocioi are: a smooth to corrugate scapus, a delicate scapulus provided with a ruff of non-adherent papillate outgrowths, absence of acrorhagi, more mesenteries distally than proximally, a weak diffuse sphincter, and presence of numerous spirocysts in the pedal disc. The new genus is discussed in relation to five other genera which are characterized by a distal ruff of columnar outgrowths: Actinostella Duchassaing, 1850; Oulactis Milne-Edwards & Haime, 1851; Saccactis Lager, 1911; Isocradactis Carlgren, 1924; and Isoulactis Carlgren, 1959. Of these, it seems...

New records on sea anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps Naturalis
López-González, P.J.; Rodríguez, E.; Gili, J.-M.; Segonzac, M..
During several cruises carried out by the Ifremer (Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la mer) with the submersile “Nautile” at different hydrothermal sites and cold seeps, an important collection of anthozoans - mainly actiniarians - was sampled. Additional material was collected by an American cruise with the submersile “Alvin”. The goal of the present contribution is to describe part of this actiniarian fauna inhabiting three chemoautotrophic sites, one of them in the Mid-Atlantic Rise and the other two in the Eastern Pacific. A new genus and species of actinostolids is proposed after the study of specimens collected at hydrothermal vents in the Guaymas Basin (East Pacific Rise, Gulf of California, 27º00’N-111º24’W, 2020 m)....

A survey of the genera Sarcodictyon Forbes, 1847, and Rolandia Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900, (Anthozoa: Octocorallia) in the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Naturalis
Ocaña, O.; López-González, P.J.; Núñez, J.; García-Gómez, J.C..
Sarcodictyon catenatum Forbes, 1847, is a common species in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. However, often it has been mistaken for Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900. On the basis of British and Mediterranean material we studied the main characters for distinguishing S. catenatum. We consider Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900, to be a valid species and we assign to it all the material named Rolandia rosea by S. Weinberg (1978). Furthermore, a histological study confirmed that R. coralloides typically forms groups of polyps embedded in a common coenenchyme. Therefore, the possibility of transferring R. coralloides from Stolonifera to Alcyonacea is discussed. Evagorgia rosea Philippi, 1842, is here considered to be a nomen dubium.
