Estela, F.A.; López-Victoria, M..
Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the birds in the Colombian Caribbean is still meager. Coastal wetlands are among the less studied environments in the area and one of the most important for their high bird richness. Since 1998, inventories and monitoring of the bird populations of the lower part of the Sinú river have been made. Until July 2005, 296 bird species have been recorded for the area, 41 of which are new for this part of the Caribbean; in addition, new wintering localities were noted for eight migratory species. Breeding records were obtained for 98 species. Three species are threatened at some level and six have a restricted geographic distribution. New records for the area are explained in terms of the limited previous knowledge of...

Confirmation of the occurrence of the coral Pavona chiriquiensis Glynn, Maté and Stemann (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Agariciidae) in the Colombian Pacific OceanDocs
Zapata, F.A.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Rodríguez-Moreno, M.; Muñoz, C.G.; López-Victoria, M..

Chaves-Fonnegra, A.; López-Victoria, M.; Parra-Velandia, F.; Zea, S..
The Caribbean encrusting and excavating sponges Cliona aprica, C. caribbaea, C. delitrix and C. tenuis (Porifera, Hadromerida, Clionaidae), aggresively undermine and displace live coral tissue. At San Andrés island and Islas del Rosario (Colombian Caribbean), in all 145 observed cases of direct contact of the sponges C. aprica, C. caribbaea and C. tenuis with 17 coral species, corals showed unhealthy signs in their tissue. It was also noticed that the surface of these sponges is colonized by few organisms and that they are rarely preyed upon. To establish the possible use of chemical substances by these sponges in competition for space with corals (allelopathy), as inhibitors of larval settlement (antifouling), and as feeding deterrents against generalist...

During six months visual censuses were carried out in two mangrove lagoons in the island of Tintipán, Colombian Caribbean. Twenty-six species of juvenile reef fishes were observed, some of them with economical importance in the region. The importance of the lagoons as nurseries for fishes is presented and one dynamite illegal fishing event is reported.

Las formaciones coralinas de Isla Tortuguilla (Caribe colombiano) OceanDocs
López-Victoria, M.; Díaz, J.M.; Márquez, J.C..
Tortuguilla is a small island off the southern portion of the Colombian Caribbean continental coast. It is surrounded by a shallow calcareous shelf which is overgrown by recent coral formations whose distribution, composition and zonation are herewith qualitative described for the first time. Observations and data collecting were conducted during two days from a boat by snorkeling at 63 stations and along manta tow transects. Despite the reduced area and the adverse turbidity and sedimentation conditions, at least 16 species of stony corals were registered (4 more to be confirmed), being Millepora spp. and Siderastrea siderea the most common. Five different coral assemblages were recognized.

Is competition for space between the encrusting excavating sponge Cliona tenuis and corals influenced by higher-than-normal temperatures? OceanDocs
Márquez, J.C.; Zea, S.; López-Victoria, M..

Model-based geomorphology of Malpelo Island and spatial distribution of breeding seabirds OceanDocs
López-Victoria, M.; Rozo, D.M..
The spatial distribution of seabird nests present on Malpelo Island, the main characteristics of the islandʼs topography, and the types of substratum available for nesting were addressed using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The model is based on data from remote sensors (satellite images, aerial photography and panoramic photography), and from field data processed through a geographical information system. The nests of Sula granti prevail on the surfaces of Malpelo Island and neighboring islets, while those of the remaining species (S. sula, Creagrus furcatus, Anous stolidus, A. minutus and Gygis alba) are spatially restricted to the cliff margins and to crevices or caverns at different heights. The presence of terrestrial predators and predatory birds...

New aspects on the symbiotic relationships between Dardanus fucosus (Crustacea: Paguridae), Calliactis tricolor (Cnidaria: Hormatiidae) and Porcellana sayana (Crustacea: Porcellanidae) OceanDocs
López-Victoria, M.; Barrios, L.M.; Kraus, H.; Osorio, L.A..
The observations were made in captivity of the interactions between hermit crabs (Dardanus fucosus), anemones (Calliactis tricolor) and porcelain crabs (Porcellana sayan) all live together in two shells of gastropods collected in the region of Santa Marta. During 36 days were sporadic entries of the behavior of organisms, as well as video clips and photographs. We found new evidence in favor of relations of mutual and commensal type involving the three species, supported by the active transfer of porcelain crabs (Porcellana sayan), food and activities of the three species.
