Mer økologisk skolemelk i Trondheim! Organic Eprints

Organic and conventional public food procurement for youth in Norway Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Koesling, Matthias; Roos, Gun; Birkeland, Liv; Solemdal, Liv.
In Norway, public procurement of food to youth is not well developed in comparison to many other European and Scandinavian countries. School meals are only offered in very few primary schools, and the common school meal is a packed lunch (sandwiches) brought from home, consumed in the class room. Subscription schemes for milk were introduced around 1970, and for fruit around 1995. Organic milk and fruit is offered only in some regions. Since 2007, fruit is served without payment in all schools with a lower secondary level (class 8-10 or 1-10). This effort was introduced as a first step to develop a free school meal in all public schools, which is a goal of one of the political parties in the current government. As in many other European countries, free...

Utrangerte verpehøner: Store forskjeller i utnyttelsen i Norge, Sverige og Danmark Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Spent laying hens are killed in different ways. Whereas in Sweden a large proportion is slaughtered for food purpose, even for export, most hens are slaughtered by a mobile system in Denmark, killing the hens in a mobile gas container and mincing them for mink feed. In Norway, most laying hens are killed by gas and incinerated.

Hva slags korn trenger vi å foredle i Norge? Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
The paper refers a field day arranged in stange, Hedmark in July 2016 to learn about cereal breeding with the national breeding company, Graminor, which also has an interest to breed varieties for organic growing. Increased interest is also found for varieties with high qualities for food consumption, such as higher contents of micro minerals, where old varieties often have higher contents than modern varieties. Breeding for high gluten contents to produce high loafs is controversial and some blame modern varieties for contributing to the increased intolerance for industrial cereal products.

Certification of public organic procurement in Denmark, Finland, Italy and Norway as compared to Germany Organic Eprints
Strassner, Carola; Lukas, Melanie; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
In the iPOPY project (innovative Public Organic food Procurement for Youth), one of the tasks was to map the challenges linked to the supply chains of organic food, and to which extent the participating countries have developed any form of certification of out-of-home food serving. For primary production and processing, regulations have been developed on the EU level. Norway, as a member of the EEA, is obliged to follow these EU regulations. However, the EU regulations on organic agriculture do not comprise catering, restaurants and other out-of-home food service. Hence, various countries have developed different systems to certify e.g. restaurants wanting to market their organic menus. This report describes the systems in Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway...

Studies of the availability of soil phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in organic farming systems, and of plant adaptations to low P- and K-availability Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
In organic farming systems, the purchase of nutrients is firmly restricted as compared to conventional farming systems. This will often cause a negative nutrient budget on the field level, especially in cases with low animal density, where more nutrients are removed in yields than are applied in fertilisers. Studies on five organic dairy farms in Southern Norway, that were aiming at self-sufficiency,revealed that the concentrations of ammonium-acetate lactate (AL) soluble phosphorus (P) had decreased with time. The farms had been organically managed since 1986 or earlier. It was found that the higher the initial P-AL concentration, the greater was the decrease that occurred, calculated per year. Out of 156 topsoil samples, only 6 had low P-AL values (< 25...

SoilEffects - start characterization of the experimental soil Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Johansen , Anders; Pommeresche, Reidun; Riley, Hugh.
This report describes the establishment, experimental plan and initial soil characteristics of the field experiment linked to the project “Effects of anaerobically digested manure on soil fertility - establishment of a long-term study under Norwegian conditions” (SoilEffects, 2010-14). The aim of the SoilEffects project is to identify potential risks and benefits for soil fertility when animal manure is anaerobically digested for biogas production. The field experiment was established on Tingvoll research farm in 2011. A biogas plant was built at this farm in 2010, to digest the manure from a herd of about 25 organically managed dairy cows. This report describes the initial characterization of the soil biology, chemistry and physics, along with the...

Ta fosforet tilbake Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Eikås, Sondre.
Organic farming systems with restricted access to animal manure often experience decline in soil P concentrations. Nutrients should be cycled in society to maintain the long-term fertility of agricultural soil. One option for this may be precipitation of struvite (magnesium-ammonium phosphate) from sewage treatment plants, to be Applied as fertiliser. Struvite produced in a Norwegian sewage plant (Hias IKS)significantly increased yield levels and soil P concentrations, when applied in one season (2018) in a long-term experiment comparing two levels of manure application at Tingvoll research farm, NW Norway. Struvite has been proposed by the Expert Group EGTOP to be included in Annex 1, listing permitted fertiliser inputs in organic farming. However, a...

Collembola in grassland – included in the new project SoilEffects Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Little is known about Collembola in arable soil, at least in Norway. Recently, a study including this group has been initiated in a Norwegian field experiment Soileffects). Collembola (springtails) are a group of small animals (1-3 mm) living in vegetation, litter and in the pores and caves in the soil to a depth of ca 15 cm. They are important decomposers of dead plant material, eating fungi, algae and microorganisms in soil and on organic debris. Their grazing and decomposing activity contribute significantly to the nutrient circulation in the soil. The name springtail refers to a furca on their back, usually folded in under the body, but released in need of a rapid escape. In one jump, Collembola can jump more than 50 times their own body length. In...

"Thirty-farm Project", Norway Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
A whole-farm case study on 32 Norwegian farms, out of which most were dairy farms, showed that animal health was better on organic farms than the Norwegian average. This is probably due to dominantly spring calving, much lower rations of concentrate and lower milk yields. Roughage yields were ca 10% lower than on conventional farms in the same district.

Phosphorus availability on many organically managed farms in Europe Organic Eprints
Cooper, Julia; Reed, Eleanor Y.; Hörtenhuber, Stefan Josef; Lindenthal, Thomas; Løes, Anne-Kristin; Mäder, Paul; Magid, Jakob; Oberson, Astrid; Kolbe, Hartmut; Möller, Kurt.
Maintaining sufficient soil phosphorus (P) levels for non-limiting crop growth is challenging in organic systems since off-farm inputs of P are restricted. This study assessed the status of P on organic farms in Europe using soil test results for extractable P. Data was obtained from published literature, unpublished theses, and various national and regional databases of soil test values. Most of the data (15,506 observations) came from field scale soil tests, but in some cases (1272 observations) values had been averaged across a farm. Farm scale and field scale data were analysed separately and the impact of farm type (arable, dairy, grassland, horticulture, mixed, poultry, unknown) was assessed. Soil test results were assigned to P classes from very low...
