Demand Analysis for Fish in Tunisia: An Empirical Approach AgEcon

The aim of this paper is to analyze and determine the factors influencing fish demand in Tunisia during the 1975-2000 period. A Box-Cox transformation is used to select the appropriate functional form between linear and double-log models. Results indicate that the double-log form fits better the data and is used for the empirical analysis. Calculated elasticities from static model show that fish demand is price-inelastic and that fish can be considered as a normal good. However, the dynamic analysis using Houthakker-Taylor model suggests that fish consumption in Tunisia depends on consumers psychological-buying habits. Measuring Irrigation Water Efficiency with a Stochastic Production Frontier: An Application for Citrus Producing Farms in Tunisia AgEcon

The objective of this paper is to propose an alternative measure of irrigation water efficiency based on the concept of input- specific technical efficiency, which contracts with measures previously used in the literature. The proposed methodology is applied to a randomly selected sample of 144 citrus growing farms located in Nabeul (Tunisia). A stochastic production frontier approach, based on Battese and Coelli’s (1995) inefficiency effect model, is used to obtain farm-specific estimates of technical and irrigation water efficiency. For the past two decades, Tunisia has been undertaken important structural reforms, which call in most cases for market and trade liberalization (agricultural structural adjustment program, GATT reforms, free trade area with the European Union). The private-led type of growth strategy with less government intervention has culminated these last years into a more rapid economic growth and openness. Measuring factor substitution and technological change in the Tunisian agricultural sector, 1971 - 2000 AgEcon

The production structure of Tunisian agriculture over the last three decades is investigated using a translog variable cost function. Standard results of neoclassical duality theory are used to obtain measures of elasticities of substitution between inputs, price elasticities of factor demands and the rate of growth and bias of technological progress. Empirical results obtained from the joint estimation of parameters of the cost and share equations indicate an increasing trend in the degree of substitutability between labour and intermediate inputs. Measurement and Sources of Technical Inefficiency in the Tunisian Citrus Growing Sector AgEcon

This paper investigates farm level technical inefficiency of production and its determinants in a sample of 150 citrus producing farms in Tunisia using a stochastic frontier production function approach applied to cross section data. Results indicate that technical efficiency of production in the sample of citrus producing farms investigated ranges from a minimum of 26.84% to a maximum of 97.98% with an average technical efficiency estimate of 86.23%. This suggests that citrus producers may increase their production by as much as 13.77% through more efficient use of production inputs. A Panel Data Approach to the Measurement of Technical Efficiency and its Determinants: Some Evidence from the Tunisian Agro-Food Industry AgEcon

This study investigates firm level technical efficiency of production and its determinants in the Tunisian agro-food industry. To this end, a stochastic production frontier model, in which technical efficiency effects are assumed to be a function of firm-specific variables and time, is estimated using panel data on 46 agro-food firms observed over a period of 14 years. Results indicate that technical efficiency in the sample of firms investigated ranges from a minimum of 45% to a maximum of 90% with an average technical efficiency estimate of 67%. The impacts of program subsidy on productivity growth is investigated in this study Mundlak's concept of endogeneity is applied to technical efficiency and generalized within a dual framework. Technology is described by an aggregate cost function while technical efficiency is conditional on a vector of state variables. Empirical evidence from the U.S. dairy sector supports the hypothesis that protectionism, in the form of program subsidy, is the source of considerable technical inefficiencies.

Decomposition of output growth in the Tunisian olive-growing sector: A frontier production function approach AgEcon

The aim of this paper is to investigate the relative contribution of technical efficiency, technological change and increased input use to the output growth of the Tunisian olive oil growing farms using a stochastic frontier production function approach applied to panel data for the period 1995- 1997. The proposed methodology is based on the use of a flexible translog functional form. Results indicate that technical efficiency of production in the sample of olive producing farms investigated ranges from a minimum of 24.8% to a maximum of 84.6% with an average technical efficiency estimate of 48.5%. Productivity and Economic Growth in Tunisian Agriculture: An Empirical Evidence AgEcon

This paper analyse the patterns of productivity and economic growth in the Tunisian agriculture during the 1961–2000. Results indicated that agriculture output growth where high in both the 1961–1970 and the 1971–1980 periods but decreased during the 1991–2000 period. Average output growth exceeded 6% during the 1981–1990 period, the average output growth during 1991–2000 had fallen to 4%. Over the whole period, capital was the most important contributor to output growth and labour is considered as the least significant contributor to economic growth.
