The submersible-study of four segments of the East Pacific Rise between 17 degrees and 18 degrees 40'S, where the spreading rate is greater than 150 mm/a, allows us to confirm the variability of the accretion processes. The segment between 17 degrees and 17 degrees 30'S shows an intense present-day magmatic activity. The one between 18 degrees 10' and 18 degrees 22'S shows a mainly tectonic activity. The segment between 18 degrees 22' and 18 degrees 37'S is an intermediate stage with an axial graben in which fresh lavas were emplaced by an extremely young eruption. On all the segments the hydrothermal activity exists ranging from shimmering water up to black smokers, It is associated with different stages of animal colonization. |

In two companion papers, we report the detailed geological and mineralogical study of two emblematic serpentinized ultramafic bodies of the western North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ), the Urdach massif (this paper) and the Saraille massif (paper 2). The peridotites have been exhumed to lower crustal levels during the Cretaceous rifting period in the future NPZ. They are associated with Mesozoic pre-rift metamorphic sediments and small units of thinned Paleozoic basement that were deformed during the mantle exhumation event. Based on detailed geological cross-sections and microprobe mineralogical analyses, we describe the lithology of the two major extensional fault zones that accommodated: (i) the progressive exhumation of the lherzolites along the Cretaceous basin... |

70 hydrothermal sites were observed during the 23 dives of the French submersible Nautile (''Naudur'' cruise, December 1993), at 17-degrees-19-degrees-S on the East Pacific Rise. Large vent-animal communities are present around these sites. The zoological composition of these communities is the same as that of the communities at 11-degrees-13-degrees-N and 21-degrees-N on the East Pacific Rise. However, the distribution of the species on the sites is different from all the other hydrothermal communities; large anemone fields of several hundred square metres, associated with colonies of Bathymodiolus and Calyptogena, have been observed. Fresh lava areas seem to bear the most important biological activity. |

A study of the seafloor in the North Fiji Basin is leading to a better understanding of the geometry and evolution of spreading in back‐arc basins. Two of the most important features of the area, the South Pandora Ridge and the Tripartite Ridge, belong to a presently active spreading system that began forming at least 7.2 m.y.a. The ridges spread at an average rate of about 1.6 cm/yr. By studying the segments of the ridges in greater detail, researchers found that each was either a “tectonic type,” with a more or less complex deep axial valley, or a “volcanic type,” with a high, rifted volcanic massif occupying the axial domain. |

0bservations made from the submersible SP 3000 Cyana on the southern flank of mount Ormonde (Gorringe Bank) have shown that in oceanic depths, processes of alteration and disintegration of gabbros and dolerites occurred. These processes give us a better understanding of source zones of Alps, Apennines and Corsica where sands, breccias and olistoliths ofgabbros outcrop. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

69 new hydrothermal sites were discovered during the Naudur diving cruise. Dives were conducted between 17 degrees 5 and 18 degrees 40'5 on four segments showing marked contrast in morphology, volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal activity. At 17 degrees 10'5, 17 degrees 25'5 and 18 degrees 37'5 the ridge has a dome shaped cross-section and is dominated by very active volcanic activity. Early widespread low temperature (<50 degrees C) diffuse hydrothermal discharge is followed by focused high temperature black smokers. At 18 degrees 15'S tectonic activity is dominant, no recent lava was observed, and only two of the 20 hydrothermal sites are active. At 18 degrees 32'5 recent lava representing a new volcanic episode partly covers the bottom of the graben.... |

Seismic, Seabeam, magnetic and gravimetrie surveys in the southern part of the N-Fiji basin were conducted during the SEAPSO LEG III Cruise. The active spreading axis was recognized between 17°30'S and 21°S. It consists of a continuous N-S Ridge cross-cut by transverse directions oriented N25 and N45. North of 17°30'S, the spreading System is more complex due to the existence of a possible triple junction located around 15° S. The eastern part of the N-Fiji basin, west of Viti Levu is mostly characterized by alternating highs and deeps (<4,000 m). This area must be regarded no more as a spreading center, but as complex boundary suffering transverse tectonics. |

The aim of the 20 Nautile dives of the recent Kanaut cruise was the study of the Kane Fracture Zone from its intersection with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge up to 80 km to the west. The dives have been conducted along four massifs located along the southern wall of the fracture valley. The flanks of the massifs consist of slightly tilted peridotites, gabbros and basalts, which have been exposed along normal and strike-slip major faults. No dike complex similar to that observed along the ZF Vema was observed The observed sections show pervasive cataclastic deformation and greenschist-facies metamorphic overprint. |
