The study of the feeding behavior of D.cuneata (Moreau)(Soleidae, Pleuronectiformes), and the structure of the alimentary tract, show that this sp is a predator of benthic invertebrates or invertebrate fragments wrecked. According to the increasing depth and the progressive decrease of water movements, its food preference is fragments of adult Bivalvia, Polychaeta and Amphipoda. In this work, the feeding behavior is studied in relation to age, sex and state of sexual maturity. 3 patterns of seasonal bathymetric movements are proposed. (1) Anadromous trophic migration which takes place during sprig with movements towards the coast due to the warming of the waters. (2) Catadromous genetic migration, concerning in summer adults only. (3) In winter, the whole... |

Close similarities have been found between the otoliths of sea-caught and laboratory-reared larvae of the common sole Solea solea (L.), given appropriate temperatures and nourishment of the latter. But from hatching to mouth formation. and during metamorphosis, sole otoliths have proven difficult to read because the increments may be less regular and low contrast. In this study, the growth increments in otoliths of larvae reared at 12 degrees C were counted by light microscopy to test the hypothesis of daily deposition, with some results verified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and by image analysis in order to compare the reliability of the 2 methods in age estimation. Age was first estimated (in days posthatch) from light micrographs of whole... |
