Biocoop is a network of organic shops which today gathers 345 shops in France in early 2014 (190 in 2000) and represents about 15% of the organic market in 2012 (versus 2,5% for its main competitor, La Vie Claire, and 47% for the big retailers all together)1 . http://www.biocoop.fr/ Right from its beginning, Biocoop chose to put forward its basic values (equity, cooperation, respect of strong social and ecological criteria, transparency and traceability, consumers’ sensitization) through a formal charter and a guideline. This guideline is composed of 4 conventions (retailing, management, social and ecological conventions). Biocoop’s governance has always involved the producers and the employees. Despite this, in the late 1990s and 2000s, Biocoop’s strong... |

Organic sectors and markets differ throughout Europe, but common to all is that local organic market initiatives have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume (both in terms of management and logistics or course, but also in terms of maintaining their core values) and often , while mainstream large-scale market chains have inherent problems in securing and advancing organic values. This has been amply studied within agrifood studies and especially within the conventionalisation debate. However, beyond these often dichotomized views, an assessment of the diversity of organic chains in diverse European countries has showed the existence a diversity of intermediary cases which can be considered as midscale “Values Based food chains” (Kvam and... |

Based on the comparison of a dozen case studies within the Healthygrowth project (cooperatives, box schemes, organic shops network etc.), this paper aims at exploring which mechanisms of governance and coordination within growing mid-scale organic initiatives and their surrounding network allow (or not) to maintain strong shared values alongside the upscaling and growth process. We first analyse the competing conceptions over values and the possible controversies among the different stakeholders involved in these initiatives: do they want “just” organic products or more, i.e. for example local and seasonal products, or ‘fair’ products coming from small scale peasant farms etc.? We then analyse the initiatives’ governance, who it involves (shareholders or... |

In various European countries, organic farming acts as a driving factor for territorial development, forming initia-tives like the Biovallée in France, Biodistretti in Italy or Bioregionen in Austria. These initiatives aspire to create ‘model regions’ for sustainable development not only in agriculture, but in a wider perspective. While the overall objective is similar for all approaches, the outcomes differ as our analysis of three European territories shows. |

In various European countries, organic farming acts as a driving factor for small and medium enterprises, cooperations of food businesses or territorial development. Examples for regional development initiatives are ‘Biovallée de la Drôme’ in France, ‘Biodistretti’ in Italy or the ‘Bio-Regionen’ in Austria. Regional development initiatives aspire to create ‘model regions’ for sustainable development in agriculture and in a wider perspective. While the overall objective is similar for all approaches, the outcomes differ between enterprises and regions. However, the regional embeddednes plays always a strategic role. The region can be the key quality criteria of the values-based food chain, the main characteristic of the differentation strategy or just... |

This report studies how the initiatives maintain their values over time, as well as an openness to debates over these values, thanks to the way they set up and then maybe adjust over time their governance modes (both in terms of internal organization and of alliances/partnerships with other actors) and their coordination modes (contracts, agreements and arrangements). It focuses on how within the food chain and between its different partners (producers, buyers, retailers, and possibly also consumers) values are discussed, negotiated, and translated into concrete management, coordination and governance modes, which allow the initiatives to reach a certain degree of stakeholders and network alignment. Our hypothesis is that specific modes of management,... |

The Drôme valley is the most developed area in France with respect to organic agriculture. In this small region (2200 km², 54000 inhabitants), organic production represents 30% of agricultural land, high above the national average of 3%. A public project was launched in 2009 by the 102 municipalities of the valley: the Biovallée project (www.biovallee.fr). The Biovallée project aims at making the Drôme valley a pilot territory in terms of sustainable development. Therefore it includes operational objectives for 2020 in a diversity of sectors, among which energy (coverage of 100% of household consumption with renewable energies), waste (a 50% reduction), land use (no more destruction of arable land), housing (building 5 eco-neighbourhoods), education and... |

How do organic initiatives and food chains succeed in maintaining their foundational values along and despite their growth process? This question which appears central in the “conventionnalisation debate” has been tackled by the European project HealthyGrowth (2013-2016, Eranet Core Organic program). In this project, 11 teams from different countries developed and applied to 22 case studies, 5 different perspectives dealing with organization modes and governance, management strategies, communication of values, mediation of values, and resilience in a context of crises and changes. The cross analysis of these case studies, carried out through a multi-perspective approach, made it possible to identify 3 important aspects which allow maintaining values along... |
