Climate change mitigation is urgent and adaptation to climate change is crucial, particularly in agriculture, where food security is at stake. Agriculture, currently responsible for 20-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions counting direct and indirect agricultural emissions), can however contribute to both climate change mitigation and adaptation. The main mitigation potential lies in the capacity of agricultural soils to sequester CO2 through building organic matter. This potential can be realized by employing sustainable agricultural practices, such as those commonly found within organic farming systems. Examples of these practices are the use of organic fertilizers and crop rotations including legumes leys and cover crops. Mitigation is also achieved... |

In 2010, the BLE commissioned an evaluation of the Federal Organic Farming Scheme (BÖL), running since 2001. This paper reports on the approach taken in the evaluation of its research component, selected findings, and recommendations. An impact model of the BÖL scheme was developed to analyse how the various measures could contribute to the scheme’s overall aims and objectives. Data from the BLE research project database were analysed to assess the distribution of resources over time by topic and by research provider. At project level, a random selection of 83 projects was reviewed by external experts, including both scientists and other stakeholders to assess their quality and relevance. An online survey of 104 project leaders and interviews with 30... |

Since the mid 1980s, organic farming has become the focus of significant attention from policy-makers, consumers, environmentalists and farmers in Europe and state institutions have become increasingly involved in regulating and supporting the organic sector. Reflecting the multiple goals for organic farming and for agricultural policy, a varied and complex range of policy measures have been developed and implemented to support the organic sector. However, balancing societal and consumer/market goals and balancing institutional and private stakeholder interests in the organic sector present particular challenges for policy-making. The key issues of current organic farming policy addressed in this special issue therefore specifically consider the two... |

The term agroecology is used mainly to describe an approach “emphasising ecological principles and practices in the design and management of agroecosystems, one that integrates the long-term protection of natural resources as an element of food, fuel and fibre production” (Lampkin et al., 2015, P9). Agroecological approaches in farming can make a major contribution to the sustainable intensification of agriculture in the UK but there is no specific policy framework for ‘agroecology’ in the UK. Building on a previous builds on the LUPG report by Lampkin et al. (2015) on the contribution of agroecology to sustainable intensification the report present a short background section, the approach, results and conclusion. |

This study aimed to provide MAFF with an assessment of the potential for organic poultry production in England and Wales and, in particular, to identify likely constraints on the development of organic poultry production enterprises, including physical, financial and market factors. The study will e composed of 3 specific objectives outlines as follows, together with ways in which they might be achieved: 1. Definition of the physical production parameters for alternative poultry production to organic standards, with particular emphasis on free range and perchery systems and their respective input requirements and output potential. A detailed literature review will be conducted and consultations will be made with existing organic poultry producers.... |

The paper aims at contributing to a better understanding of the linkage between supply chain performance and possible performance improvement with respect to food quality and safety. Therefore, the paper addresses the question whether the level of collaborative planning and close supply chain relationships could help improve quality and safety of organic supply chains. The three main weaknesses in the performance of European organic supply chains identified are high logistic and transport costs, the level of input costs and low expenditure on research and product development. While we found a high level of collaboration for information sharing, there is almost no collaboration with respect to joint decisions on optimal order quantity and inventory... |

The presentation provides a short overview of organic farmign support in the European Union, where government intervention has been very important for the development of the sector. Initiatives of individual governments in the 80s were followed by European Regulations on organic standards and setting the framework for financial support to organic producers under agri-environment support. Initial focus on conversion support resulted in imbalances in supply and market but also provided impetus for market growth. The focus now more on integrated policies (action plans) integrating pull and push measures. The presentation concludes that governments need to be clear about why organic farming is worth supporting. |

Within the EU funded project ORGAP a toolbox was developed for the evaluation of the European as well as national action plans fror Organics food and farming. Recommendations and a resource manual for policy makers and stakeholders were published, based on the analysis of national Organic Action Plans as well as stakeholder and expert consultation. The analysis showed that several EU member states have emphasised the need to balance supply-push policies with more market-focused demand-pull policies. An integrated approach is required through the formulation of multi-functional Organic Action Plans (OAPs), which also adress the dual roles of organic farming to provide public goods and satisfy consumer demand. Eight analysed Organic Action Plans... |

Executive summary European markets for organic products are growing rapidly, but the market information available in most European countries is woefully inadequate. Often only very basic data such as certified organic holdings and land area are reported, and sometimes not even individual crop areas or livestock numbers. Important market data, such as the amount of production, consumption, international trade or producer and consumer prices, do not exist in most European countries. In some European countries there are only rough estimates of the levels of production and consumption. There is no standardisation and data are seldom comparable. Furthermore, detailed information on specific commodities is missing. Hence, investment decisions are taken under... |
