INTRODUCTION Species of the genus Gyrocotyle are quite common intestinal parasites of chimaerids. As far as we now know, each parasite species is restricted to one host species. In each host species, however, a second and much rarer species of Gyrocotyle may occur besides the common one. The common species are systematically related to each other, and so are the rare ones. In the present paper two species of the group of rare species are described. Their existence has been known already for a long time, but, for different reasons, they have never been recognized as separate species. DEFINITION OF SOME TERMS Ι. Spines. — We recognize two types of spines in the genus Gyrocotyle, viz., the urna-type and the confusa-type. In spines of the urna-type the... |

INTRODUCTION Flatworms living as commensals on parasitic copepods from marine fishes were known already as- early as 1835, when Johnston described Udonella caligorum from Caligus spec., a parasite of Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.). Since then a number of similar genera and species have been described, but none of these is clearly different from Udonella caligorum, as far as can be judged from the descriptions. Therefore only one valid species is recognized by most modern authors (Price, 1938; Sproston, 1946; Ivanov, 1952b). Calinella ophiodontis Kay, 1945, a species not listed by these authors, probably is another synonym to be added to the long list, but Kay's material should be re-examined before a final decision can be made. In Yamaguti's compilation... |

INTRODUCTION In 1889 Van Beneden described a new tetraphyllid cestode, Dinobothrium septaria, for which he erected a new genus. It was peculiar in having a rather small body with a very large scolex, the largest of all tapeworm holdfasts. Since then a small number of other species of Dinobothrium have been described (for two of them new genera were proposed, viz. Gastrolecithus Yamaguti, 1952 and Reesium Euzet, 1955). They have only been found in large sharks, both in preying and in plankton feeding species. Mola (1907) was the first investigator who found such a tapeworm in the Basking Shark, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus). Euzet (1955) has tried to elucidate the remarkable and confused history of these animals. He recognized three genera and only three... |

INTRODUCTION Two years ago I found two specimens of a curious animal in a sample of coral sand from Curaçao. It superficially resembled the larva of priapulids, animals that are restricted to cold water. The condition of the specimens did not permit of a description and I did not succeed in determining the group to which the species could possibly belong. Later I happened to see a paper by Remane (1963) in which he gives a simple figure of "a not yet described animal from the sandy bottom of the Red Sea". I immediately recognized it as a relative of the species from Curaçao. Upon request Professor Remane informed me that he had fixed some specimens, but that these were lost. He had not found more material of the species and he had not heard of these... |

INTRODUCTION Freshwater microturbellaria of the Netherlands were studied already by De Man (1874). Since then this subject has not received much attention and much faunistic research remains to be done on this large and interesting group. The present paper deals with material from distribution mains for drinking water in the South and the West of the Netherlands and from a canal in the city of Leiden. A new species of Microdalyellia is described. MATERIAL AND METHODS The material was taken from the following samples: Sample no. 150. Leiden, Zoeterwoudse Singel (canal), near Koepoortsbrug. Between vegetation (Glyceria); decaying vegetable debris, mainly Glyceria and Aesculus leaves; 10-15 cm deep; temperature above 50 C (there was no ice in the second half... |

The occurrence of the skull parasite Skrjabingylus nasicola (Leuckart, 1842) in Stoats and Weasels from the Netherlands has been studied extensively. A redescription is given of certain morphological characters of the parasite, which includes the discovery of hitherto unknown peribuccal papillae. The genus Skrjabingylus is discussed. The extent of infection and the damage caused by the parasite in Stoats and Weasels has been assessed by studying collections of preserved skulls. Detailed comparisons are made between the infection percentages in both species of mustelids in different areas of the Netherlands and in different European countries. Also the relation between infection and age and sex has been studied. In the discussion an attempt is made to... |

INTRODUCTION The species of the genus Priapulus occur in rather cold water. Hence, their shallow-water distribution is restricted to northern and southern waters (fig. 1); there are only a few isolated records from sub-tropical localities. However, in deep water the genus apparently has a world-wide distribution (fig. 2). The northern species (P. caudatus De Lamarck) and the southern species (P. tuberculatospinosus Baird) from shallow water are well defined but the specimens from the deep sea present systematical problems. In my survey of the Priapulida (Van der Land, 1970) I could not answer the question of their identity, because I had seen only very few specimens from deep water and not a single one from the tropical deep sea. Meanwhile I could study... |

INTRODUCTION In the present paper an attempt is made to collect all records on Tardigrada from the Netherlands and to give a review of the Dutch literature on this group; "second-hand" information of little importance, however, has generally been omitted. Further a list is given of the species present in the small collection of J. C. C. Loman, now property of the Zoologisch Museum, Amsterdam. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE In a handbook by J. van der Hoeven (1846, pp. 236 and 666) the Tardigrada are called Colopoda, whilst the name Tardigrada is still used there for a group of mammals; in R. Leuckart's supplement to Van der Hoeven's book (1856, pp. 143-144) the name Colopoda is altered into Tardigrada. Van der Hoeven mentioned some species but he did not... |

Names of groups of organisms in the higher categories are being changed rather often, even when there is no need for it. This is allowed because the codes of nomenclature do not apply to group names above the family level. Regrettably this may lead to long periods of confusion. Examples are Coelenterata for which the new name Cnidaria was proposed in 1888 and Madreporaria for which the new name Scleractinia was proposed in 1900. The gradual replacement of the old names by the new names in scientific papers during the last 50 years was analyzed. The name Madreporaria virtually disappeared during this period and the name Coelenterata is now being used in only about 10% of scientific papers and had better be abandoned as well. |
