| Après avoir exposé en détail les caractères des sédiments dragués et carottés, nous allons résumer les données acquises puis nous tenterons d'en faire la synthèse dans les conclusions. Les faits suivants ont été établis: 1° Les dragages sur les pentes du talus du plateau continental ont fourni des galets dont la lithologie est très monotone. Les principaux composants sont le quartz, les quartzites et plus rarement les roches cristallophylliennes. Les roches éruptives sont toujours très rares ou sont totalement absentes dans plusieurs stations. Les dragages des stations 343 et 369 ont fourni des graviers en nombre important (quartz et quartzites). Il est à noter que les terrasses de la Garonne présentent la même monotomie lithologique (HAUG, 1920).... |

| Foraminifera were abundant in samples obtained from the Mauritanian coast. Their ecology and geographical location was studied. The genera and species are initially grouped according to the nature of the seabed and its depth. Those found in (1) deep mud at 500-1200 m, (2) muddy sand at 20-340 m, (3) shelly sand at 30-52 m are considered in turn. Group (I) varied according to the station of collection, and were affected by factors in addition to depth, such as the presence of corals. Muddy sand was poor in large individuals and in empty shells, but contained many displaced littoral forms. | Examination of marine sediments containing planktonic foraminifers within siliceous sediments prompted us to carry out a comparative study on their respective settling velocities. Using the determinations done by Durand and Cohen de Lara (1953), we adopted the same method of calculation as in a recent note on the settling velocity of maerl grains (Berthois and Guilcher 1959). We will draw heavily from these two studies. To compare with data on quartz particles, we carried out a series of experiments on settling velocities in fresh water. We then measured the velocities in salt water. |
