| This review presents the different international fishery organizations in charge of the conservation of tunas and tuna-like species in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; respectively IOTC; ICCAT and IATTC/WCPFC. Moreover, this review also focuses on swordfish Xiphias gladius stock assessment and describes, for each stock worldwide, the total catches, the status of the stock as well as past and actual management measures. The Mediterranean stock is the only one assumed to be in overexploitation. This stock is currently under management measures (driftnet prohibition, seasonal fishery closure) but no TAC assigned. | Cette synthèse bibliographique présente les différentes commissions internationales de gestion des grands pélagiques dans les océans Indien, Atlantique et Pacifique, respectivement la CTOI, la CICTA et l'IATTC/WCPFC. De plus, cette synthèse focalise sur le cas de l'espadon Xiphias gladius et détaille pour chaque stock, les captures, l'état du stock ainsi que les mesures de gestion passées et en cours. Le stock de la Méditerranée est l'unique stock en état de surexploitation avéré et fait l'objet de mesures de gestion (interdiction des filets dérivants, fermeture saisonnière de la pêche) mais pas de TAC. | Based on genetic and biological dynamic approaches, the main objective of the IOSSSESPADON project (2009-2011) is to study the biology and the stock structure of the Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the Indian Ocean and the bordering oceans (South East Atlantic and West Pacific). The results of this project will greatly contribute to a better stock assessment of this species that is undertaken by fisheries management commissions, mainly the IOTC. | Genetic population structure of swordfish Xiphias gladius was examined based on 2231 individual samples, collected mainly between 2009 and 2010, among three major sampling areas within the Indian Ocean (IO; twelve distinct sites), Atlantic (two sites) and Pacific (one site) Oceans using analysis of nineteen microsatellite loci (n = 2146) and mitochondrial ND2 sequences (n = 2001) data. Sample collection was stratified in time and space in order to investigate the stability of the genetic structure observed with a special focus on the South West Indian Ocean.
