| Summer mortality has been reported in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, for many years in Japan, US and Europe. It affects both adults and juveniles and the causes of this phenomenon are complex. Environmental, physiological or pathological putative causes were studied all over the world. Recently, the MOREST project ((MORtalitEStivale) a multidisciplinary project (2001-2005) focused on his problem led to a better understanding of this phenomenon in France. The results showed in these geographical conditions, the main interactions between the oysters, their environment and certain pathogens. |

| L'objectif de ce thème est de préciser les relations entre Mortalités et Environnement, en déclinant cette relation à travers les "risques environnementaux" caractérisés depuis le début du programme MOREST. La température, les bassins versant etlou l'eau douce, la ressource trophique, le compartiment sédimentaire, autant de facteurs impliqués directement ou indirectement dans les processus de mortalités de Crassostrea gigas. Ces facteurs d'influence "externe" sont étudiés à différentes échelles d'espace ("nationale", "régionale", "sites") et de temps (annuelle, mensuelle, bimensuelle, journalière, horaire, infra horaire) en s'appuyant sur des données issues de bases institutionnelles (REMORA', REPHY~, METEO-FRANCE) et sur les résultats de terrain obtenus... |

| The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys.... |

| Oyster mortality was monitored at multiple sites along the French coastline (around 5 500 km) between 1993 and 2005. Mortality data for one- and two-year-old oysters were collected over 1012 years in 39 oyster culture sites bordering 3 different "seas": the English Channel, Bay of Biscaye and Mediterranean. Combining these data with records from environmental monitoring databases, 11 of these sites had consistent chronological data sets including both environmental data and mortality records. Mortality in one-year-old oysters was clearly summer mortality (49% of their annual mortality) whereas mortality of two-year-olds occurred mostly in spring (51%). Analysis of variance revealed that "coastal area" was the main influence on mortality of one-year-olds... |
