Different particle sources in a bivalve species of a coastal lagoon: evidence from stable isotopes, fatty acids, and compound-specific stable isotopes ArchiMer

The trophic fate of various food sources is of central interest for ecologists, yet not well understood in coastal lagoon food webs. In this field study, fatty acids (FA), stable isotopes (SI), and compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) on FA were used to investigate how diets from oceanic and local sources are retained in a bivalve species (Spondylus crassisquama; Lamarck 1819) along a transect in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon (BCS, Mexico). Results from SI and FA indicated the contribution of oceanic diatoms at the entrance of the lagoon, through 15N enrichment, and higher proportions of 16:1n-7 and 20:5n-3 in digestive glands. In the inner bay, higher abundance of 18-carbon FA (18:1n-9, 18:3n-3, 18:4n-3) suggested a higher contribution of...

δ13C, δ15N, and C:N ratios as nutrition indicators of zooxanthellate jellyfishes: insights from an experimental approach ArchiMer
Djeghri, Nicolas; Stibor, Herwig; Lebeau, Oanez; Pondaven, Philippe.
Some jellyfish host zooxanthellae in their tissues (mostly from the family Symbiodiniaceae; Dinophyceae) and supplement their heterotrophic nutrition with their symbiont's photosynthates. The mixotrophy of zooxanthellate jellyfishes (as holobionts) renders the study of their nutrition, growth, and population dynamics complicated. Here, we used an experimental approach to assess how carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) as well as the elemental composition (C:N ratios) of zooxanthellate jellyfishes are affected by variations in nutrition sources: i. e. predation (heterotrophic) versus photosynthesis (autotrophic). Our laboratory experiment, conducted on the zooxanthellate jellyfish Cassiopea sp. medusae (including symbionts) in the presence or...

Acid digestion on river influenced shelf sediment organic matter: Carbon and Nitrogen contents and isotopic ratios ArchiMer
Pasquier, Virgil; Sansjofre, Pierre; Lebeau, Oanez; Liorzou, Celine; Rabineau, Marina.
Rationale Natural stable isotopes ratios (d13Corg and 15N vales) and associated elemental concentrations (i.e. total organic carbon and total nitrogen contents) preserved in marine sediments are frequently used for the determination of paleoenvironmental processes such as the origin of organic matter. Previous studies highlighted biases in the determination of such geochemical proxies due to pre-analysis acid treatment methods. This study is the first systematic comparison of the effect of acid treatment methods on bulk organic matter using a unique sedimentary system, under two contrasting climatic contexts (i.e. glacial vs interglacial). Methods We used the most common method for pre-treatment analysis, which consists of the acidification of bulk...
