From October 1965 to April 1966, sardine laying in the Gulf of Lion was studied by the Institute of fisheries laboratory of Sète. Plankton fisheries, at two levels (surface and 5 m), were conducted each month on 26 stations distributed over the whole continental shelf. A total of 236 traits were carried out, at surface level and at depths of 5 m, with Hensen nets, dragged at a speed of about one knot, and using a flow-meter, evaluating the volume of filtered water. Moreover, hydrological results concerning the sardine laying season were used, representing 800 observations on environmental conditions. The collected material represents 50 255 eggs and 7 758 larvae preserved with Baker formalin. Its laboratory study included: egg and larva count as well as... |

We recently analysed a population of Mediterranean sardines in the Gulf of Lion that had never before been studied in its entirety. The analysis drew on biometry and haematology, a novel approach for this type of study. The study was carried out over three consecutive years and the morphological, biological and ecological characteristics of this population were described, sometimes in great detail. Some practical conclusions were drawn for the Mediterranean sardine fishery.... |

Fisheries oceanography, in its use of various disciplines necessary to the study of oceans, is driven to understand the relationship linking oceanic phenomena on the one hand, and marine animals and their exploitation on the other hand. Its purpose generally has no bearing on fundamental research. As a result, fisheries oceanography rarely finds in the data provided by this latter anything to enable the progress of its specific approach of halieutic problems. Thus, in most cases, fisheries oceanography has to build its own baseline research, following specific programs and methods. Another disadvantage derives from this state of things. The education provided to young oceanographers does not prepare them for tackling practical oceanography and they have to... |

The argentine was described as of 1554 by Rondelet who gave it the name of "little barracuda".Thereafter, the taxonomics of this fish was determined in more detail. There are currently three European species-A. sphyraena Linnaeus, A. silus Ascanius and A. leioglossa [syn. Glossanodon leioglossus] Valenciennes-described from specimens that come from Algiers and provided by Guichenot.... |
