Shallow water sponges of Jamaica Naturalis
Lehnert, Helmut; Soest, Rob W.M. van.
An annotated comprehensive list is provided of all shallow-water sponges (down to 60 m) recently collected and previously recorded from Jamaica. Five new species are described, Plakina jamaicensis, Melophlus ruber, Agelas repens, Stylissa caribica and Hyrtios tubulatus, two of which belong to genera not recorded before from the Western Atlantic (viz. Melophlus and Stylissa). The number of species recorded from shallow waters (reefs, mangroves and lagoons) now amounts to 157 species, several of which, however, are still of uncertain status.

More North Jamaican deep fore-reef sponges Naturalis
Lehnert, Helmut; Soest, Rob W.M. van.
A second investigation of the North Jamaican deep fore-reef slope, using mixed gas to reach depths from 70 m to a maximum of 107 m depth, revealed 43 species, 9 of which are new to science: Erylus incrustans, Polymastia fordei, Pseudaxinella flava, Phakellia bettinae, Iotrochota agglomerata, Callyspongia densasclera, Niphates lutea, Xestospongia deweerdtae, and Euryspongia lankesteri.

Description of the North Jamaican Timea micraster n. sp. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Timeidae) Naturalis
Lehnert, Helmut; Heimler, Wolfgang.
A new West-Indian species of Timea is described and compared with all other Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterranean members of the genus. Timea micraster n.sp. has a surface system of furrows with elevated sides, not known from other congeneric species and has the tiniest asters known in the family. These asters are of unusual shape but comparable to known species of Timea. The large aster-category has unique cylindrical processes on top of conical rays.

North Jamaican Deep Fore-Reef Sponges Naturalis
Lehnert, Helmut; Soest, R.W.M. van.
An unexpectedly high amount of new species, revealed within only one hour of summarized bottom time, leads to the conclusion that the sponge fauna of the steep slopes of the deep fore-reef is still largely unknown. Four mixed gas dives at depths between 70 and 90 m, performed in May and June, 1993, at the deep fore-reef off the north Jamaican coast in front of the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, revealed a total of 27 demosponge species, ten of which are new to science.
